Probably one of the most important things about a new Generation of Pokémon games is the region. It gives the atmosphere to the game, decides the path of your journey and overall I think they play an immense part in the enjoyment of a Pokémon game, at least for me. Now there's been a lot of speculation going on about the new region already so I thought it'd only be right to make a thread about it.
The last two regions, Kalos and Unova, were both shaped similarly with the player starting at the south and then making their up to the central city, Lumiose or Castelia, after the first badge and then went from there. Especially Lumiose really felt like the central hub of the Kalos region. It'll be interesting to see if they'll go with the same region layout again in SM.
Another thing is what irl region the SM region will be based on. As you probably know, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are all based off Japanese regions and Unova and Kalos are inspired by NYC and France respectively. Since they've already done North American, European and Asian inspired regions, I really hope they'll change it up and do a region based off South America or Africa this time around. The former would seem more likely, since there's more South American Pokémon fans than there in Africa. If the games will have a heavy focus on the sun and moon, that's also another hint towards South America. The sun and moon play a huge part in some ancient South American religions, like the Maya's, so that'd make sense.
So what do you think, dear random LV member? >_>

This is my idea that's really a wild guess, though I do have some supporting details for it. First of all, it seems unlikely, because it seems Pokémon games seem to be in earth-regions it's most popular, like Japan and America and France, but the recent theming of Sun and Moon makes me thing of the Arabian Peninsula and the middle-east.

Here's my reasoning: Islam is the primary religion over most of that region, and there's a lot of moon symbolism (especially crescent moon) in Islam. Furthermore, can you really tell me there's no similarity between the Pokémon Moon icon, that crescent plus part of its circle in the middle, and the Islamic crescent-and-star? To me, the similarity is uncanny.

Another *small* thing supporting this idea is that maybe-leaked list of Pokémon from last week that included some species whose species names are Quantum and Singularity. This implies a higher-sciences theme, and although it's not necessarily as true today, Arabia used to be the scientific leader of the world a few centuries back. You know, when they were designing pokeballs 800 years ago. Plus the Arabians had some of the most sophisticated astronomy in the world at the time, which brings more credence to Sun and Moon. And I guess if you want to get overly simplistic with the geography/climate of the region as well, go ahead and call it one big sandy desert and that the Sun imagery can be related to that. Back to that maybe-leaked list, Pokémon #777 in that list is described as an angel, and angels are a feature in Islam as well, not just Christianity and Judaism. Just another thing to add to the maybe-list.

So, yeah, I think it's a long shot, but I could see the choice making sense.

@[member="Zero Sifr"] has a really good point about an Arabian setting. I would have hoped to have an Australian setting, but I believe an Arabian setting would be really cool, considering my background is Lebanese. I don't really want to repeat ideas that other people had, but maybe I can add to the Arabian possibility?

In the trailer, this hotel-like area is seen:

When my family went to Lebanon, we had to stop at Dubai, another Middle Eastern country. It had hotels, which almost looked like the one in the picture above. The hotel did have water features, and the entrance, as far as my memory goes, looks almost identical to the one in the picture, as well as the colour scheme of the hotel. Coincidentally, both hotels had a similar botanical structure and a blue floor as well, though the blue floor in my hotel was darker than the one in the picture. Who knows? We can either be right or wrong.

@[member="✯Ho-OhLugia✯"] Nice point! Do you think you could find us a picture to show in comparison? It might be an astounding breakthrough in this mysterious region!

I don't mean to stray from the topic on the region's location, but what do you guys feel about the region itself? Gen 6 is still pretty new...so what if this still classifies as Gen 6 but a continuation of such. It seems pretty odd to start a new Gen when the last one only had about 60+ new Pokémon... But, what do you think?

I want to say that I think Sun and Moon will be set in Hawaii or another beachy country. If you look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrMotVZWHSY&t=3m11s of this video, it shows a sort of hut that you would find in a place like Hawaii.

It's in the side of the shot. I'd also have to say the picture just looks quite tropical.. Not to mention all the water types that are there(that might be because it could be a gym)

I'm going with a Caribbean country or Hawaii.

@[member="ShiroKyun"], I couldn't exactly find the picture, but this is as close as it gets:

There was a garden, and off course, a fountain.

They'll need to get to Australia sometime. We have our own ecosystem down here, and that'll make a killing in Pokémon designs.

Yeah, lately a lot of 'evidence' has been pointing to Hawaii, that'd make some sense. Though it seems strange they'd use the exact same licensing plate in game as the irl one. Even when it was totally obvious Kalos was based off France, the GF guys weren't supposed to actually go ahead and say it was. Going as far making such a clear reference to the real world just seems a little odd, but not impossible. Can't deny Hawaii is probably the most prominent irl region it could be based on. Maybe that'll change or become even clearer when we get actual footage of the game >_>
