HMs have long been one of the fanbase's biggest problems with Pokémon (at least from my experience). Most of them, such as Cut, Rock Smash, and Whirlpool don't have a large purpose, they stink in battle, and they're a pain to find a member of the party to learn. In Sun & Moon, there is a chance that even more HMs could be eliminated.

Which HMs do you think we'll have in Sun & Moon? Which ones should we get rid of? Which ones should we keep? Do you think that there will be any more HMs?

I personally hope that more of the HMs will become like Rock Smash, as in they will just become a TM, and it won't be necessary by any means to use that move in order to beat the game. If that happened with Strength and Cut, I would be happy with that. I would be fine with just Waterfall, Surf, and Fly, but there are definitely ways that we could replace those moves with key items, like a boat or something. Idk, I just want to get rid of some HMs.

HMs are a bother. I realize they do add that element that you need Pokémon to progress in your journey and that you can't exactly forget how to surf in the middle of the ocean. However, for a lot of Pokémon fans, it's really annoying. Pokémon has been doing a pretty good job eliminating HMs over the years though.
I remember playing a hack a while back and I remember the person implementing items such as a hatchet as an alternative to cut. I think that would be cool to be implemented into the game.

Lost is right. There are quite a few games out there with Key Items replacing HMs. At least partially, anyway. And, as a member of a forum where we discuss the creation of Pokémon fan games, I've been in several discussions like this.

Unfortunately, the general consensus is that, as Wizard said, they want you to feel that Pokémon are necessary to complete the game. If you could use something like a hatchet, besides the fact that you are pretty much 12 years old, you don't bond properly with the Pokémon.

This, of course is a load of BS. But age does play a part in it. Not many 12 year olds are going to have the strength to cut trees, let alone move boulders or break rocks. Plus, no-one really likes to think of a mute, possibly crazy young child running around with an axe.

So, unfortunately, as far as I can see from Aola, or whatever it is called, the HMs Surf, Dive, Fly and, potentially, Cut will most likely make an appearance. Of course, it is fairly possible that Dive is replaced by Scuba Gea... Oh ffs.. Again with the foreshadowing... I need to stop reading this stuff. I'll turn into a conspiracy nut...

So yes, it is possible that Dive will be replaced by the... *sigh* Devon Scuba Gear, which made its first appearance in OR/AS. Possible, Yes. Likely, no. As I understand, in OR/AS it was a prototype, so you still needed Dive. Maybe it's better.

And since you live on a goddamn island, maybe you might have learnt to freaking swim!

Okay... I'm done here... But good topic anyway.

I think having a couple HMs is good, but possibly replacing some of the more commonly-used HMs with key items instead could be a neat idea. I think Surf, Fly, Waterfall, Dive, and Strength should be kept as standard HMs. For caves that could use Flash or some sort of light, you could be given a flashlight to use, or something of that sort. On small trees and bushes that can be cut, a pair of trimming scissors could be used, or a small axe. For Rock Smash, since the rocks are usually cracked anyway, a hammer would make quick work of that. For Rock Climb, a simple rock-climbing set would do the trick.

Another idea is that certain Pokémon would be given the HM ability from the start, without having to learn the move. HMs would become regular TMs, and instead each Pokémon has the possibility of having different HM abilities that it can use in the field. For instance, a Pidgeot would have the Fly HM ability, and a Lapras would have the Surf, Strength, Waterfall, and Dive HM abilities. These abilities would not interfere with their movesets, they would be separate. I doubt they would actually impliment that into the game, but it would make gameplay a lot more interesting. You could basically bring along a full team of Pokémon without having to worry about keeping a set HM user on your team, and instead plan around your team's HM abilities.

I doubt Nintendo will change up HMs too much, but if they did something similar to the HM ability idea, it could be pretty neat.

I'm fine with all HMs, as long as they're usable moves in battle. The things that qualify as "usable moves" in my eyes are the moves that actually deal damage. I'm one of those people who teaches all of her party's Pokémon HMs and actually use them in battle. Some of those moves aren't so bad, you know...
I definitely think HMs will be a thing in Pokémon Sun and Moon. I don't see why Game Freak would take them out (granted, they're annoying for a lot of people, including me sometimes). I agree with [member="Deltheor"]'s list of HMs: I think those should be sufficient.
