(I sure hope I spelled the title right, and I also hope I spelled "spelled" right)

Bases. Basic shapes or poses, most of the time not very detailed and colored yet. Some artists always stick to them, searching high and low for the right one. Some artists just draw up rough basic shapes to use as reference material when drawing. Some artists don't need them at all and are able to produce art without even looking at a base once.

What is your position in this? How would you qualify yourself? Have you used bases made by other artists before, or do you make bases yourself? What happens to a base when you add an acidic fluid to it?

I dont really like bases, I understand why people use them but I can't support them. I find it like you are preventing yourself from learning to draw and progress. I used a few in my time but I can't anymore really, it is so hard to feel ok with my self when i use them.

I find bases really useful for more detailed and specific drawings. I end up tracing the actual bases because of layers and stuff. Obviously I don't use bases for ever single thing ever, but they can be useful. Maybe it's just me, but I think they're good for practice and you could learn a bit from them. I have, actually, just about some basic shapes and stuff. Maybe that's just me, but whatever.

That's a neat way to use bases Nova, of course just plain old refs could do the trick too. I used to have a friend who only used bases and I honestly can say they hinder progress (and take up space on your computer where art could go!!) Avoid bases if you can, but don't be afraid to use references. many artists, even professionals still use references.

I personally can't hate on them too hard because I personally used them a lot about 4-5 years ago. They helped me at the time with clothing and such, but I think i've grown as an artist to the point where I don't need them anymore. I personally don't recommend them, as my main struggle is anatomy currently, and I think that's why. For people who just wanna draw clothes then I see no reason not to use them.

I think bases can help an artist learn more on how to draw by them selves. For starters, some people could have a difficult time drawing different parts and/or positions and the bases can help them understand on how some work.

I draw my own bases, but don't use them as much as I used to. A while ago, my characters were so horribly unproportional...god it was hideous. Now, though, I don't have characters with stretched limbs. Perhaps my epic failure at drawing Prof. Oak finally got it through to my thick skull that bases are a good thing...

I kinda support bases and I don't mind if people use my drawings as a base. As long as they only sketch the shape of my characters body eyes, nose and mouth it fine. I started out my art with bases but then i realized i should learn how to do it my own. Bases help spark creativity and some people will realize wow I want to get better at art. Through time they'll find their own way on drawing. So I really don't hate them at all.

I've never used bases, and I don't think I ever will. I mean, I'm not hating on them or anything, I just like going through the drawing process all on my own. I like it to be all my own work, and not just tracing over something like a base. If I need a reference for a position, I look up the position and draw something similar while looking at the picture on my computer or phone.

I started using bases as references now. And my drawings actually look pretty good, if I say so myself.
