To how high a standard do you hold proper grammar/spelling online? Do you think less of someone who does not?

For me, I don't a shit about a grammar, so mine's horrible, just see me on discord xD

From me, I would say I'm okay, what I get wrong is the tenses and how things sound

On most sites (like forums) I like proper grammar. On ff.net it's very important for me to have proper grammar... not hard to figure out.

On Discord, I just don't add punctuation to anything. Why bother?

Grammar is only important when it's something like an assignment/fanfic.

    however on other sites
    my writing is all lowercase
and ill usually break up phrases
and make those their own message

    Very much so.

On chatrooms it doesn't matter as much, because the conversations happen in real time, and spoken words are always a lot sloppier than written speech, so I expect real-time chat posts to be a bit more lax when it comes to the particulars of grammar and punctuation.

But in any written medium - whether it be a forum post, a work of fiction, an essay or other assignment, a written correspondence - it doesn't matter. People can always put in the time and effort to make their posts, works, letters, emails, or what have you look as good as it can be, so there really is no excuse for subpar grammar and sentence structure. I tend to be stricter on the grammar more than the spelling, because there are times when people legitimately don't know how to spell something, either because of a more complicated word or homonym confusion (or perhaps something else, but those are the main two).

But if I see insufficient punctuation in a written post of any kind, I'll either ignore it or leave. I've seen posts without commas and full stops before (or even only 1 or 2 in the midst of an entire paragraph), and they bother me so much that I can't even read past the first true comma placement. I have held this stance for almost a decade (if not more) and it's not about to change any time soon.

I have grammarly installed to make sure I have good grammar and good spelling though I still make mistakes. I don't think it matters too much if I am chatting it doesn't matter at all but I do like to keep it consistent. I just type without thinking a lot of the time XD

Just look at me on the Discord! Or even now! I always make sure I use proper grammar and punctuation! Do I look down on those who don't? Only if it's a serious project, such as a story or an essay. I've never been the type to judge others based on how they speak in real life or type in a chatroom. I do joke occasionally when a member's name is in all undercase... Just look at me greet some of the new members~ I. Go. Insane.

On Discord or things like that, it's totally fine if someone messes up.

    But in real life...
I am well-known among my friends and family to get annoyed at every single detail.
I see a lot of there, their, and they're mistakes.
No one seems to be able to use apostrophes correctly.
IT'S MADNESS I TELL YOU! MADNESS!

Ahem... I don't try to look down on those who don't have proper grammar and such, but I always try to help them. I'd understand so much more if they were learning the English language.

It depends on where and what, as to how much. Outside the internet I usually write very high quality academic stuff so it's got to be a habit for that, but online, it's obviously less so, the point is communication more so. But if it's a written post and I see the mistake I'll usually fix it, on a chat, I'll let mistakes go and use a lot more slang and abbreviation because it's only a temporary format

Grammar is my biggest pet peeve.
If someone isn't a native English speaker, then, okay, I can understand why they'd make mistakes. And, like others have said, on real-time chat posts, grammar flies out the window. But otherwise, not using proper grammar is upsetting. I've seen grown adults, who have been writing for decades, mix up their there, they're, and theirs, or not know the proper place to put an apostrophe. Maybe in elementary school that could be excused, but not with thirty-year-olds.
On FF, the first thing I look for is the writer's grammar knowledge. A few mistakes are to be expected now and then-- you can't catch them all-- but if I see five mistakes in the first two sentences, or even in the summary, I'm not reading onwards. I cannot take seriously, or tolerate, a piece of writing with bad grammar.
And, yes, I do judge a person by their grammar. I respect someone who takes the time to look over what they've written to make sure it's clear and comprehensive. Someone who writes with atrocious grammar obviously didn't put much effort or thought into their writing at all. I want to know people who care, not ones who are sloppy.
(my exception is speech. No one gets grammar right while talking, I don't care.)

I care less about it than I once did because I discovered you can miss out on good information if you just ignore something because of how it's formatted. I generally try to use good grammar but I don't break myself over it, and I do like using some colloquialisms sometimes depending on my mood. Sometimes I'll type things the way I might say them instead of perfect English intentionally, and use things like "cause" instead of because or drop a G that should follow an N and throw in an apostrophe instead. Depends on my mood and how I feel like coming across at that time. Sometimes I want a posting to have a certain feel and character to it and use these things to that end.

There was a time where it was different but these days I don't look down on people for the way they type as long as I can understand what they're trying to say, it's not worth getting snobby and bent out of shape over that stuff, at least not in the context of chats and forum posts.

Personally, I always try to use proper grammar and punctuation in anything I write. There are reasons for all the rules we have in the English language, and it's so we can get our point across as efficiently as possible. Doesn't it defeat the whole purpose of writing something if people can't understand it because of how poorly written it is? That being said, I don't mind it as much if other people don't write perfectly. I'm mainly critical of myself, and as long as I know that the other person could write well if they really wanted to then it doesn't bother me (but it won't win them any brownie points either).

Am I weird in that I love proper sentences but I also love using emojis? I feel that sometimes you need to use emojis to fully express what you mean. Without them, sentences can feel so...blunt. :annoyed:

It kind of depends on the context, and what site you're posting on. Like if it's just a comment on something or whatever, then I don't always care as much. And if you're typing on a phone, then the occasional typos and auto-corrected words are understandable. Obviously if you're writing a story, blog, etc. then it would be expected that proper grammar would be used (to the best of one's ability of course). I've always felt that, if you have the time to write out something and proofread it, then there's no reason why improper grammar/spelling should be used.

But that's just me. I know everyone has their own opinion on this. (:

I wouldn't necessarily say that I think less of someone who uses poor grammar (and people often have their own definitions of "poor grammar"), but I just need to understand the content of the message/what they're trying to say. :)

I'm personally really big on grammar myself and have watched way too many YGS videos...

I would like to point out that the moments in which auto-correct changes things to completely different, entirely unrelated words are the moments that make life humourous and really worth living. A mobile phone's auto-correct function is so aggressive that it can have hilarious and sometimes even disastrous consequences.

For example, one time someone wanted to thank me for my help by typing in "Thx", but it came up as "The". It wasn't until "The" happened on 3 separate occasions that the owner finally realised what was happening. (I had no idea; the guy didn't try and correct the previous instances, so I was just sitting there without any context...and then it happened. It was amazing.)

In my mind, I don't really mind about grammar if it comes to chat rooms or texts and stuff like that, but things like school assignments (or fanfics!) need it a lot. Yep, I've had the occasionally slip of the finger when I've typed my stories before, but I go back over my stuff a few times before I post it. (And especially on ff.net, some people there can get very nit picky when it comes to grammar).

And sometimes it's just how a character is talking (if it's a character with bad grammar, that is). I had a friend who did this short story thing with me for my English 2 class and had a character who had bad grammar. That's understandable (I'm sure I went over his work for spelling though :o). But other than that... I don't really know what to say. Just be careful if you think you have bad grammar somewhere, and read over your stuff (it helps A LOT! :))
