Plot is a component of (most) video games in some form or another. In some it's more prevalent (or apparent) than in others, and plays a prime role, having a high level of importance. In others, the plot isn't touted as being as important, and other factors of the video game are lauded instead. However, every gamer will have a different experience with games, and while a game might have a plot (perhaps a very deeply involved one), you won't think about it as much because you like other things about the game (such as the gameplay), and that's what draws you to them.

For an example to that, for anyone who has played any games in the Halo series, do you play the games more for the plot, or because you find it fun (or some other reason)? In games like those, plot would take a backseat role; it's there, but that's not the selling point.

As for all of you, how important is a video game's plot to you? Does its relative importance to you depend on genre? Is plot a primary selling point for you? Do you not care about plot at all, or give more attention to other things? Or did you acquire a game for plot but became more attached to it for other reasons (or vice versa)?

Speaking for myself, plot has only been important in a handful of video games for me - and based more on title than genre; for example, there are some visual novel games I've played for which I critically care about the plot and it's very important to me (Zero Escape), and there are others that I don't care about the plot very much and I'm just there for other reasons, like humour (Ace Attorney). And I'm like that for almost every genre of video games I've played.

Plot is basically never a selling point. It's something I may grow attached to later, but it's not why I get the game to begin with. A basic premise may be enough to appeal to me, however. But, more often than not, I play (or replay) games because they're fun. I love Mario Party to bits and that has absolutely zero plot, and other games I enjoy are low on the plot scale but make up for it easily in other factors.

I absolutely love a good plot. It obviously isn't needed in all games to be able to enjoy them, like you said, but more often than not, I prefer a game with a good plot. It isn't always the one, major reason for me to buy a game, although, if I find it to be boring, I probably won't continue to play it. Graphics and gameplay are also huge factors for me; I'm not the type to play matching games, like Candy Crush (for an obvious example), even if it has a good plot. I like a good balance between them.

I especially like it when a plot is surprisingly good; like, you bought a game just because you liked the series or because you liked the concept. Then, the plot hits you hard. Pokémon Sun and Moon are kind of good examples, as well as Super Paper Mario (in my opinion).

I'm also the kind of person who loves stories, so, this isn't all that surprising to those who know me. Yay, plot.

For me it depends on the game and it's features. For the most part plot is important and is one of THE first things I look at. If there is nothing significant there then I look at other factors. There are some games however, where plot is the ONLY thing that I consider. Pokémon, plot is important but not crucial. Megaman, I just care about beating the bosses. Rune Factory, plot is VERY important because that one tells a good story to me. Like I said, it all depends on the game and what challenges it presents.

First and foremost, the game must be fun to play. Any game with a great storyline is going to be utter shit anyways if the gameplay sucks. On the other hand, a good story enhances the game. The most important aspect of any story is the character, and then the conflict. If a person it not invested in the main character he is playing, she is not going to care when he or the princess or whoever is suddenly in danger.

Plots come in two types: McGuffins and Actual. Mario is a McGuffin game. Bowser steals Princess Peach. Okay, so what. It's a McGuffin to give you a reason to play the game. At the end of the game, you save Peach and you don't really feel anything but closure. More plot-heavy games are far more invested in story. I'm sure I don't need to talk about these, everybody else is.

Plot is one of the least important things for me, I want the aesthetics and gameplay to be 100% up my alley, and if there's plot I honestly either don't care or find it annoying/getting in the way of my playing for the most part. I'm a bit too busy levelling/grinding/collecting to want to try and care about characters I 80% of the time don't care for at all. The closest I come to being interested in plot is playing Otomes, and that's a pretty "poor" kind of plot by most people's standards :P

For me, the plot does not necessarily have to be good to make a great game, but the best games have great plots, fun and interactive gameplay, and strong graphics/visuals. I don't really care about the music most of the time, because I usually play without sound, but a good soundtrack always helps. Some examples of great games that fit into this are Pokémon Sun & Moon, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Undertale. There are probably others I am missing since I don't really play 1st person shooters much.

Plot is pretty important for me. Not all games need it, but a strong plot is what gets me wanting to keep playing and to find out what happens next. If I'm playing an RPG and I don't care about the characters and plot then that's probably a big issue.

Really depemds on the game. Like I don't always care about plot I can handle an awful plot if the game is fun but for those games like Zero Time Dilemma the plot is everything for me since the puzzles are a bit frustrating.
