What would you do? (This is for my book)

It actually depends on the size of my team, and the size of the army that are advancing. If I had a strong team, but the enemy outnumbers us by 1/10, then I would initiate a final stand. But if the odds are way to high, then I would issue a formation that would allow my team to push through one direction (for example, the whole team will run and push towards the eastern part of the army), and once we mannage to push through, we'll make a break for the nearest outpost (or wherever our base of operations is at).

I'm not sure if this was helpfull or not, but I just wanted to express my opinion.

 

What is the terrain like? Is the city on a hill? Is it in, or surrounded by forests or desert? Is this a modern-urban environment? How are your men and the enemy units armed? Is there magic involved, or are there guns and missiles being used (or both)? Is the army intent on completely razing this town to the ground? Are there underground tunnels?

 

Against that many people and considering that the village was abandoned anyway, I would probably just run. Clearly something's gone wrong in the chain of information and either you were misinformed, something has changed, or someone intentionally sent you on this mission to get you killed. I would probably have my team sneak to the opposite side of the village, leave, and split up to try to take cover and hide in the forest.

 

I'm with Wolf Expert, getting the heck out of there is the best option, regardless of what tools we have at our disposal. If we fight, one of two things happens: I and my teammates are killed/captured, or we each personally kill an average of 28,500 people to ensure our own safety. Enemy soldiers, sure, but still people dead by our hands. After we got away, I'd then find out who provided the intel that got me put there, and follow bread crumbs until I found out who decided to have my squad killed, whether it was intentional or not.

Also, 200,000 sounds like a lot of people. I mean a lot. Even 2000 is a very large unit of combatants, and it's still terrifying to be one of seven people taking on odds that are almost 300-to-1.

 

Fighting back would most likely mortally wound your team or your self, so the best reaction would be to get the heck out of dodge or attempt to hide out to create a plan. There are a lot of houses nearby so you could probably bunker down and make a plan, either of attack or escape.

 

There's one proble mith that, you cant really run away. Remember the army is advancing from all sides, I believe that means that there are no blind spots.

Jokes aside, If as Barandofl said team is advancing from all four sides and there is no blimd spot, I may ask my team to plan something and target the point where concentration of army men is little low. All sides but there must be some point where the concentration of soldiers is less. Attacking that part to get yourself escape is the best option left, however, we may or may not win. I mean, soldiers from all other sides can attack us. I dont know what magic crystals does, if it can make me fly oh god there is not even a problem.
Can you tell what magic crystals do? It may be helpful to escape away or something.

 

First thing I must know is terrain. Is it desert, forest, hills? I can't make an accurate assessment without more information of the circumstances as a whole, terrain, what our troops are like, what there troops are like, eta. Since I know none of these, I will try to come up with a strategy, but do know this, when doing battle you must know about everything on the field in order to not fear any battle.

I will pull some inspiration from Sun Tzu. "If he sends reinforcements everywhere, he will everywhere be weak." Now I do not know the size scales were talking about but I am going to assume this to be true. Once I have established that his forces are indeed fully surrounded the town (and some aren't lying in wait), I will look for a way out of the situation. Since I am unaware of the state of the town, I'll pretend that the town does not exist. Now you can fight, Sun Tzu even says that when surrounded and given no choice to surrender or escape, one man will fight like ten. But I prefer the alternative that Sun Tzu gives, "...if quite unequal in every way, we can flee from him." But how would we flee in this situation. There are many options and I can't come up with all of them. If the enemy can't see what we are doing, I would make barrels and hide them underground with your men. You can use this to hide until the army passes then emerge. Since you have room to escape, you can then go on to use gorilla tactics to chip the force down and since they are weak everywhere, it shouldn't take too long to make the army snap. The idea of piercing through their lines may work only if the size scales are really large and they are spreading 200,000 over a huge amount of terrain. If they are close to the village and closely grouped up, it wont work. If there were trees, I would hide in the trees, if there were things in the village I could use, I would use those. But assuming I have none of that, I would use the three tactics stated above.

Either way this general is stupid. Sun Tzu even has a passage on this very tactic, "When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard." The main character is desperate and in my eyes if he doesn't offer surrender, then in my eyes he is pushing too hard.

 

I would probably still either say try to hide somewhere in the village and sneak past when possible or if it's really not an option and the characters killing themselves isn't an option, just attack them with everything at once and do as much damage to the enemies as possible before dying.
