It’s November, which means some of us have our hands full with NaNoWriMo! I opted not to do NaNo this year because I believe writing requires a lot of time, and as a student, I don’t think I can spend the necessary time to complete Nano. For example, it can take me one hour to write 1000 words. How long does it take you to write 1000 words? A chapter of your book? Or even your entire fic?
1000 words can take me several hours depending on if I know what I'm trying to write, or if I even feel the motivation to do such a thing. For a chapter, maybe a week because of school and my messed up sleep schedule. And in the end, several months for my stories. I think Ultra Light took about 9 months, without breaks. And then there are other stories, which I'm still writing even after a year because of writer's block and projects I've been trying to finish. So, I guess I'm a very varied person in the end. Could take me months, even years if I couldn't think of them.
Really depends on what I'm trying to write, I have long, detailed battles. I also have very short stories that take me a couple hours. My record was 10k in a day, but my average without too much sketching is around 1~2k per hour. With that said it can take me days to write a scene because it just doesn't feel right.
I'm... not a very good writer. My schedule is made up of procrastination. But if I'm in a good mood, I can do up to 2000 in a day.
I've never really thought about how many words I can get out in an hour. I feel like that would just stress me out because some days my words just flow onto the page without much effort at all, and other days I have to sit and think and think before I'm able to get a paragraph out. However, watching two or three episodes of a show while writing, I'm usually able to get out a 2000-3000 word chapter out every few days.
You can watch TV and write at the same time?! Wow, I’m jealous That’s too much of a mood... I’d recommend setting up a writing schedule, but then I’d just be a hypocrite!
I think I actually write best when I do watch something. It slows me down a bit, as I basically have one eye on my computer and one eye on the tv, but it motivates me to write for an hour and a half to two hours at a time. Also, I can't really read or do anything else on my computer while watching tv, so that keeps me focused on just my writing.
Depends. For me; my work schedule takes up almost my entire day and I don't have a lot of either the morning or the evening to do stuff. I'll usually leave chores and housework for one and use the other to write. I at least try to do a paragraph or two minimum so that I'll eventually finish the chapter, even though the average one for me is like 9k words in total. If a writing and update schedule works out for you, then go for it! I used to do weekly updates, then weekly turned into biweekly and now it's most monthly like Sports Illustrated lol Unfortunately I don't have that luxury anymore so it's now; I'll update when it's ready...whether it be in a week, two or a month.
Usually it depends on my motivation, but if I'm being honest that's hard to come by anymore lmao. But if I'm really motivated I can usually do a short 500-1000 word fic in half an hour-45 mins. Honestly I... Usually don't finish what I start unless it's something short. Like a multi-chapter fic is something I'd LIKE to do, but honestly I'm just so bad at writing AKLSFLD I just stick to flash fiction.
Do you end up writing a lot of one-shots then? Better than me—I hardly finish anything even if it’s a short fic!
Me? Writing consistently? Sounds fake, don't believe it. Nonsense aside, nowadays for me I'd be happy if I can write out a sentence of some fictional work! There used to be a time when I could pump out paragraphs a day, but I was younger then. Guess I just grew too old! Boo!
Yes I do! A lot of the longer stuff I try to write says unfinished for long, long periods of time... But what I do write and finish does tend to be one-shots.
Nice! Are they posted in the literature library? (I could probably search for them in the literature library myself but god knows I don’t have the patience to track down anything in the literature library... it’s huge!)
For me, I have a hard time writing at first, but after a while I pick up the pace and my writing is good. As for writing 1000 words... well I write short pieces. I struggle with long pieces of writing. So 1000 words for me is a lot to write.
hm, the first book I wrote properly was about a week of writing whereas it took almost 2 years on computer. I have a Digimon fanfic that I'm still in the process of writing, most episodes are about 6000 words because...yeah...long episodes on average I can get 2 - 5 episodes done in a couple of days in between all my school work though on weekends or holidays I can get way more done.
I haven't sat down and written for so long. I've been working through the planning phase for almost a year now and RL is really distracting. Before when I was writing a lot, the best I could do, with motivation, a thought out scene, and action music, would be 2.5k words in an hour. That's a perfect case though. I usually hit 1k words an hour on good days and 10 words an hour on bad days. Usually when I only write ten words it was because I was exploring a topic thoughtfully and putting very little brain power into writing. For writing complete chapters it can take me 4-5 days to get a complete draft done as I make my chapters 4k words long. If I get stuck on any part it may grind to 7 or greater. Editing takes another entire week. I haven't written enough fics to get a good judge on how fast I write my stories.
That's incredible! You must be so dedicated to your writing "10 words an hour" is a fat mood. Sometimes I think way too much and end up with a blank screen instead of a chapter...
geesh it depends. If I'm especially motivated and writing scenes that I tend to be good at (comedy as opposed to action, for example) then it'll take me a lot less time -- ideas would flow and I'd just keep going and going, haha. On a good day, I can write 4-6k words within a few hours.
