I feel like I hear everyone talk at some point about having problems either falling asleep or staying asleep. And it's a miserable circumstance to be in! You're wasting time and health doing nothing when you could be (and want to be) doing a more useful form of nothing, made all the more agonizing because sometimes there's nobody to blame but you and your own brain.

Have you experienced sleep troubles in your life, and have you found a fix that works for you? The kind of thing that once you tried it, you finally could rest easy and wake up the next morning feeling slightly less drained than you did last night. If you have found a fix, I'd like to hear it (and try it), and I'm sure other members of our community might be eager to try something too. Because, after all, we all deserve a good night's sleep.

I have two things I try when I have trouble sleeping, depending on my reason for sleeplessness. If I'm distracted, I put on some kind of audio that I can focus on to block out unwanted noise and to give my brain one single thing to focus on, such as being read a pre-recorded bedtime story by someone with a lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet voice. That or a white noise machine set to a similar pitch of noise I'm trying to block out, like high pitched static for blocking crickets and birds or low pitched for uncles watching football on TV in the next room. If I wake up because of hunger (which happens almost every night at about 1 AM if I exercised that evening), I have a bag of cookies right next to my pillow. The carbs feel good in my stomach, they digest easily, and the hunger stops being a problem almost immediately.

I have this problem regularly but the thing that seems to be the most effective is about 10 milligrams of melatonin (Though the last time that I tried that, my stomach wasn't too happy but I still got knocked out for the night in about an hour after taking it so it did do its job). I've been on and off melatonin for nearly all of my life and you don't need to take it every night or at some point, it'll either stop working or make the problem worse (I know that from personal experience) and then you'll have to stop taking it for a few months and then it'll start working again.

I don't have this problem mainly because I have a very regular sleep scheduled that I hold to religiously. I go to bed at 10 and wake up at 6 every day without fail. This means that when I try to go to bed, I always do unless there's some big thing that's going on in my life. My trick to go to sleep and be well rested is to have a religious schedule, (and pain medication for when I have a migraine which happens more often than I'd like). For the rare instance that I find that I cannot fall asleep, I always keep myself restrained to my bed no matter how I feel, and clear my mind completely of all though. It generally takes me about an hour if I'm super ramped up for this tactic to work, which can be agonizingly long to stay in bed, but I have strong willpower, and stay in bed anyways.

I had this problem for years. It started when my anxiety ramped up (around age 10) and it stopped a few months ago. Going to bed earlier, taking medication, and other methods for better resting never worked. The only reason I can think of for the sudden recovery is because of my better mental health. My sleep habits never changed and I feel a lot more in the morning now.

Usually I brush my teeth, take a shower, and read in my bed until I get sleepy. Then I just let my brain drone on as it falls unconscious.

Recently, I've been able to sleep mostly very fine the last few months. Though, there were also some phases where I couldn't sleep for two hours straight, for some unknown reason. Either I sleep completely fine, or I'm just able to sleep for two or three hours. But I'm kinda used to this by now.

For sleep, I have a few things I do to make it as easy as possible. Firstly, the right pillow set-up, secondly make it as dark as possible, and thirdly make it as quiet as possible.

But, if I'm having a difficult night, I try other stuff. Usually a nice tea and sit on the porch will wind me down enough (or water). It helps if I pop a melatonin prior to winding down to let it really take effect. Other times it's just occupying my mind with interesting, but not enthralling stuff such as heavy reading of things I am sort of but not super into, or podcasts of educational stuff (or, sometimes, even the podcasts people make to talk you to sleep). If it's just not working, something must be keeping me up that I have to finish before I sleep, and I just have to resign myself to finishing it first.

I have one favorite talk-you-to-sleep podcaster, but sometimes his stories actually get interesting and very nice and I get too interested in them. Something else I've tried was listening to class lectures or people talking about science (sorry, every science teacher I've had since high school), but I've had trouble finding adequate lectures, and science podcasters have commercial breaks that wake me up. So what is a guy to do?

I've actually considered recording a droning talk-you-sleep track. People tell me I sound soothing, so I might record 10 hours of just me talking slowly about boring but relateable stuff (written and recorded over several weeks or months). But now that I think about it, that does sound like a lot of work, even if it is easy work. It would be like asmr, but with more baritone and less weird mouth sounds.
