People have been (unreasonably and irrationally) begging, hoping, and praying for the Nintendo 3DS to "die" since the Nintendo Switch was announced, and it seems that despite Nintendo's repeated insistence that they would support the Nintendo 3DS alongside the Switch, that these people are about to get their wish, as it was recently announced that there was "nothing new" to announce regarding the release of first-party 3DS software.

In much the same way as Sony stopped supporting the Vita, Nintendo have now stopped supporting the 3DS, leaving it to third parties to fill in the gaps if they so choose. With Limited Run Games promising physical 3DS releases in much the same way they have been releasing physical Vita titles it seems that the support for the system is unlikely to come to a complete halt anytime soon, but with Atlus' Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth being the only new game on the horizon (correct me if I'm wrong on this, because I can't find any additional information about upcoming 3DS titles) it seems the 3DS has finally been all but decommissioned.

Is this long overdue, or are you sad to see the 3DS go? Would you like to see a proper handheld successor - either in the form of the much rumoured "Switch Mini" or another handheld with two screens - in the future, or should Nintendo be focusing exclusively on the Switch?

I am hoping they release some kind of switch mini. This would hopefully address the two problems I have with the current one: it's a bit too bulky for constant transport and hopefully they use sturdier parts because my joycon joystick has had to be replaced twice already.

Still love and use my 3ds for Pokémon and the virtual console.

Is no surprise, they wanna focus on the Switch because is gonna be their new thing it was bound to happen sooner or later anyway. The 3DS had a good run and I could see them still keep online support on it for awhile yet as many still play on theirs. As for the rumors of a Switch Mini, I think is just people's wishful thinking in the hopes they'll make a more portable console.

I know it had to happen sooner or later, but it’s still shocking to me. I just hope they can keep their online services running longer.

I suppose this was inevitable, but it is sad to see the 3DS go. Admittedly, the only thing I still use my 3DS for is Pokémon and I'll probably stop using it for that when Sword and Shield come out.

While the hardware of the 3ds never particularly impressed me, something has to be said about the amazing library that this handheld has. Honestly, it is one of my favorite consoles to date, just because of this. Fire Emblem Awakening, Bravely Default, Kid Icarus Uprising, several Pokémon games, XENOBLADE CHRONICLES 3D, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Monstery Hunter 4 Ultimate, Shin Megami Tensei, Fire Emblem Echoes (and Fates I guess), the 3D Zelda remakes, and access to the huge DS library are all amazing experiences I had with the system. I will likely always keep mine around for the few special games it has. I'm not saddened by the death of it, but it is a system I will have positive memories of.

I still have so much Fire Emblem DLC to get. So yeah, I'm a little sad to see it go.

As someone who can't afford a Switch, it's sad to see Pokémon especially moving away from consoles that I own, but it isn't unexpected. Since the switch has already been marketed as a home and travel console, it was only a matter of time.

The 3DS is by far my favorite console (Nintendo or otherwise). A fun gimmick, comfortable form factor, and an unparalleled selection of games. It’s a shame to see it go after so many years, but I’m glad it’s had such a great run. Here’s a few memories I’ve had with the console.

When the system first released, I usually had to wait until my birthday or Christmas to get a new system. Since the 3DS’ gimmick stood out so much for me, I decided to sell some things at my Mom’s garage sale. After a week of saving up, I was able to pitch for most of the system as well as a couple games. While my parents had to help me cover some of the cost, it still felt great saving up for something on my own.

My other fond memory is all of the car trips and appointments that were made more enjoyable. If I was going anywhere, I could just carry my 3DS bag and be guaranteed some fun to do on the way. Aside from the Vita and GBA, I can’t think of a handheld that I’ve taken to so many places.

You know what's ironic? I got my 3DS, what...a year ago? Because we can't afford new consoles, my boyfriend got it for me. So...now the switch is out I'm sitting here like "well okay. Um, Imma wait a while" Not like I can afford to get one so to me 3DS ain't dead yet.

They can stop announcing new stuff for it, but any games I get for it are gonna be new to me so...yeah...

Fortunately, the amount of good games in the library is massive, so it should last you for a good while, especially if you like RPG's. Hopefully some of the good games continue to get cheaper, and many have due to the Nintendo Selects.

I think companies like Limited Run Games will continue to support the 3DS with physical releases of digital-only titles, too - they've certainly done a fantastic job supporting the Vita, and that came to an end in March 2019, and was significantly less successful than the 3DS, in the West especially. I expect that to continue far beyond their initial promise of more games, because that's basically their entire business. Region locking might prove to be an obstacle, but idk how these things work. xD

There's also the question of 3rd party developers. We're still getting Persona Q2 - albeit with a lack of dub, showing a distinct lack of care on Atlus' part - and there may be others in the future. I don't see online support ending for at least another 2-3 years either, if not longer.

I like the DS and still use it for Pokémon. I also occasionally play smash on it just to to get a nostalgia trip.

I don’t get why people hated it so much though. It seems fine to me

It's sad to see it go, sure, but it was bound to happen. I actually still play on my 3ds very frequently, and even recently bought the Solgaleo Lunala edition (for collection purposes, to match my Xerneas Yveltal). Personally I don't think there's a point in collecting games if you never play them so now I'm using both devices, replaying through various games, and of course, shiny hunting Pokémon. My girlfriend also still plays on her 3DS quite a bit, probably even more than I do.

tl;dr : There's so many good games available on the 3DS - including the older DS games. That, and shiny hunting. Will never put it down.

I'm bummed because 3DS is the main system that I use, buuuut I saw it coming because the Switch is also a handheld. Soooo now I guess it's time to save up for yet another system. :/

I'm actually very sad to see the 3ds go, mainly for a bunch of technical reasons. (It's small so it won't be prone to get stolen, better battery life, no Nintendo Switch Online, etc.)

This system had a BUNCH of good games and while it wasn't as memorial as the original DS the 3ds still has a special place in my heart.

My 3DS no longer works but I'm still sad to see it not getting any more direct support. It seemed inevitible though, considering the switch is supposed to be a 2-in-1 home AND handheld console. A lot of good games are in the DS/3DS family, at least, so there aren't a lot of worries about games to choose from at least.
