So since I've only just gotten into tinkering in Dream's creation tools, I thought I'd make a 'backup' of sorts with screenshots of what I've done so far. For those who don't know, Dreams is a game made by Media Molecule, the same people behind the Little Big Planet trilogy. Context: Making assets for use in a FPS Zombie Survival game. These first two pictures just show what I've done these past couple of days, a magazine, barrel, and stock I've made for an assault rifle called the 'G408 Carbine'.
Heh, I wish. Dreams is a game that just allows it's players to make games or game assets, like world props or game mechanics. It's like the level maker feature from LBP, but by itself and expanded on much more.
After a bit more tinkering, rewinding and mistake-making, I've completed a bit more, creating the general shape of the G408 Carbine as well as the trigger and grip. Also resized other pieces to better fit, removed that weird flattened bit at the bottom of the magazine and added some shine to the metal parts of the stock.
Most of the functional pieces of the G408 are completed now, just need to finish styling the gun so it doesn't look like something out of Minecraft. Also, I think I made the stock too big.
Tinkering a bit more, I've added iron sights, improved the magazine as well as the chamber, and made the casing around the barrel a bit more styled. I'm not quite sure what to do with the body of the gun, but I still need to add a safety switch, and modify the magazine slightly.
Shaved off the edges of the G408's lower barrel casing to make the weapon look better. Also tweaked the magazine and hammer to better fit together and mesh with the gun. Made some more assets (such as separate models for the bullet and casing for firing/expending empty shells), and got some smoke and muzzle flash effects from the community uploads section to make a 'test scene' of sorts. Any suggestions or feedback is appreciated.
I've finished off the minor details I wanted to change, and I added the parts of the gun that allows a sight to be added, along with a safety trigger. I've now completely finished building the gun, time to start adding the triggers to control the animations.
@Tepig How long does this 3D Modeling work take you? It looks really good. I ask cause motion designers (people who do animation) work a lot with 3D modeling but on more traditional software like 3D Blender and stuff but it's really cool you're using Dreams!
This is all I've really modelled in Dreams so far, and alongside the coding to make the gun work, this has taken around a month of work, with an hour or two each day I worked on this. Dreams has nice, simple tools to create models like this, but it has the same thermometer system as Little Big Planet. Currently the graphics thermometer is sitting at about 40%, whilst the other two (I forget their specifics) are at 1-2%. So if I plan to make a game with MANY guns in this style, I'll have to downgrade the graphics of these in the actual game just so I can put them all in without overloading the scene.
Finally finished modelling and adding animations to the G408. The pictures are the finished product. ADS, inspecting, reloading, meleeing, even has a button prompt to change the lighting between bright and dark.
Since I've pretty much finished everything with the G408, I've begun on the second weapon. This one is going to be another assault rifle, designed to have an average fire-rate, but high damage for it's class with good mobility. Right now, all I've designed for it is the barrel and the front of the casing.
Started work on the new AR again, finished the casing and put the G408 as a size comparison/reference point. Copied parts of the G408 as more reference points for where I want certain parts to line up with.
