I've played Pokémon games since probably a few months after Red and Blue arrived in America, and consequently I've been a fan just as long, playing at least one main-series Pokémon game from every generation (and a few side games) since that time. But now, that might be changing.

The switch is expensive for me at $300 USD, and even if I buy three games making my total cash investment $450 USD, that's still $150 per playable game, which I have a hard time justifying to my bank account right now. So I think I might have to become a different kind of fan: one who entirely doesn't play the current generation of Pokémon games.

So I'm looking for people who have been in a similar way before, who for whatever reason haven't been up-to-date with the games but still likes the world of Pokémon. How did you get by? Did it feel weird being left behind in a way, or did you power through with showdown and other social and fanmade aspects?

I was brought into the series as a kid through the anime, cardgame and other merchandise. I had already been a fan for years before my parents finally got me a used copy of Pokémon Yellow (and later Red, Blue and Silver) and even then it was far from the current game in the series (I think that was Emerald at the time? Might have been Diamond/Pearl or even Platinum). I later ended up getting a used copy of Emerald and skipped the fourth generation entirely before finally getting White, which was the first time I had ever been caught up with the games (and even then that was shortly before Black2 and White2 came out). After that I didn't end up getting another main series Pokémon game until Omega Ruby and it was only at that point that I've consistently stayed up to date on the series.

I haven’t bought a new Pokémon game since I got Sun almost 3 years ago. I still don’t know what happens differently in Ultra Sun and Moon, and I don’t know the names of any places in Galar. I’ve only been able to keep up with the new things in these games by listening to the new battle themes and playing Showdown. Plot-wise, I’m completely lost on the games I haven’t played. (Oh, and as for gameboy and DS games, I usually download a ROM and play it on my computer.)

I haven't brought a Pokémon game since Ultra Moon (a purchase I highly regret) and I have a feeling that might be the last game I ever buy in this franchise (unless I manage to find myself a cheap copy of HGSS that is).
I'm very disappointed in the direction GF is taking Pokémon. I skipped LGPE and SWSH, and I'll skip the next titles if they don't turn out any better. I'll be replaying the old games from now on.

I have most games and most spinoffs, but I don’t have a switch right now either so I haven’t played sword or shield yet myself.... I was feeling a little distant from the franchise until I joined here. I think talking to other people about stuff your into keeps you invested in your hobbies. There’s like, 6 or 7 games I want on switch, but that means me paying like $650+ so we’re in the same boat lol T_T

I've actually never owned a Pokémon game, not if you don't count PoGo. I was brought into the series by a friend who watched the anime and another friend who did actually play the game. I love Pokémon, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for an RPG that isn't Earthbound - can get super grindy, and without the Earthbound insta-defeat my impatience would've overtaken me.

As a kid I was always a casual Pokémon fan, but it's only been the past few years that I've gotten really into it. The ironic thing is that when I was younger, the few Pokémon games that we had worked, so I was able to play Red, Gold, and Ruby. Now those games don't work anymore, and yet I'm even more into Pokémon than I had ever been before. I love watching the anime, and reading the anime. I absolutely love writing fanfiction and sharing my interpretation of the characters. To me, it's not that everything else about the fandom adds to the games, but the games are just something else that I could potentially (but don't have) get into to appreciate Pokémon.

Yeah, I hate how that math works out. These games aren't $60 each, they're the cost of the console + 60 ÷ the number of games you have + monthly subscription and DLC costs (please excuse my dumb arithmetic sequence), and that accumulates fast. I'd drop 40 on a Pokémon game gladly, or 60 begrudgingly... but $360 minimum? I just can't!

You reminded me of a bit of my disliking of the Pokémon games. I completely hate grinding, hate hate hate it so much that I haven't enjoyed a classic-style Final Fantasy game (10 and previous pretty much) since the sequel to 4. Sure I played 5 and 6 recently, but I didn't enjoy them, and the same probably goes for Pokémon games. If it wasn't for the pokepelago training in Alola (super easy auto-leveling), I probably would have put the game down.

I wonder if I'm being talked out of dropping too much money on a game and dodging a part of this culture that I might actually dislike. Which sounds like a maybe win-win, in a pessimistic way.
