It has been ten years since a young girl named Taki embarked on a dangerous quest to unite what was then seventeen kingdoms, and defeat the notorious warlord Nobunaga. Since then, an eighteenth kingdom, Hikari, has been discovered, and Ransei has entered into an age of peace, plenty, and prosperity.

The arts have been particularly enjoying a renewal after being closed for a long time (one of Nobunaga's many harsh laws), with many lost scripts being discovered, old favorites being dusted off for their first performances in a long time, and new material being written each day. As a result, many theatrical companies criss-cross Ransei, bringing the wonder and magic of the stage to all ages and races.

But the theater of Ransei is not like theater in other parts of the world--it is a lavish spectacle, filled with music, dance, acrobatics, martial arts, stage combat, stage archery, and even live Pokémon onstage. Even the lowliest character has a beautiful costume to wear.

Our story is about the Ayame (Iris) Company, which exclusively perform epic adventures and adventurous fairy tales:

Kotona is the narrator for the troupe, and the only one allowed to play the vina, the traditional Ranseian harp usually associated with the theater.

Eiji and Miyune (the two main heroic actors, or tennou. Eiji is the tenya, or hero, and Miyune is the tenjo, or heroine.

Sometimes Eiji will be paired with a different girl depending on the story being performed, but he is usually paired with Miyune.

Together with their fellow actors, they travel across Ransei, giving hope and renewal to a war-weary region.

You play the role of one of the members of the Ayame Company--what wonders and terrors await you as you travel across Ransei?

Sign up with the following information:

Character's name(at least have it sound Japanese)
Character's age (anywhere from age 13 to 17 is fine)
Character's physical appearance (what your character basically looks like)
Character's personality/known history (what your character is like, and how their background shaped their personalities)
Character's abilities (what can your character do well within the troupe? Do they act, play music, sing, dance, fight (either onstage or off) or something else?)

Might as well using my first OC's teenage version~
    Name: Meru Kobayashi
    Age: 17 years old
Appearance: (Not shown: a pink sling bag and a pink cloak like the one worn by 10 y.o. Meru)
    gene_20200429_105706.png
    166CA105-8F8B-45E5-839A-45ED1360B7D0.jpeg
Personality: A happy-go-lucky girl young lady whose curiosity has been leading her into various adventures. She loves to sing anytime, anywhere, sometimes without even knowing what she's singing. That, combined with her angelic voice, led her to be known as a Primarina's reincarnation back at home.
Backstory: Despite being born and raised in Wuji, Jalei (Ballonlea, Galar), Meru's name sounds Japanese enough because her father was a runaway from Yaksha and Arceus knows how he ended up marrying a Jaleian woman and settling in Wuji. As for Meru herself, she started her journey from Sondo (Johto) when she was 10 y.o. because she didn't get her endorsement to Jalei League until her 15th birthday or so. She participated in Jalei League by then but lost at some point. However, that didn't stop her from traveling around the world. Right now she's already at Ransei together with Pyonta, her female Jaleian Rapidash (the psychic-fairy one, not the fire one). They're originally there just for the sake of adventuring, but everything's changed upon hearing about the Ayame Company and all of their performances. And apparently Meru's curiosity beats her younger self's refusal to go on stage, so she decided to apply there when the company opened up a slot or two for performers.
Ability: Her main one is singing. She even does Pokémon battles with her singing in place of the usual commands. She also can act and dance to some extent, though Pyonta is much better at dancing than her.

(Galar's fantasy counterpart is named Jalei in the Ranseian language, if you're curious. Otherwise, that looks good!)

    (right now!)

The sun was high overhead the plains of the Aurora kingdom as a caravan of wagons rolled across the plains.Shion, the lead flute, led the caravan, playing a joyous melody to let travelers know a theater troupe was on their way.

The two lead actors, Eiji and Miyune, walked alongside the first wagon in the caravan, which held all the sets and props they would need to put on three unique shows in every town. They would arrive in a town, stay long enough to do three shows, then pack up and go on their way. Eventually, their route would take them all the way to the Aiiro City, where they would perform for the imperial family.

Seeing hundreds of villages, cities, and towns large and small each year excited the actors--and they wouldn't have it any other way.

(the caravan lineup is like this:

Shion, the lead flute in the orchestra, leads the caravan--her songs let the people know a theatrical troupe is coming.

Eiji and Miyune, the tennou, walk with the first wagon, which holds all the props and sets the troupe may need.

Kotona, the narrator, walks with the second wagon, which holds all the orchestra's instruments and sheet music.

The third wagon holds the costumes

The fourth wagon holds the crew

The other wagons are where the actors rest and relax)

Meru was having a walk with Pyonta when the caravan arrived. The songs they played actually enticed them to get closer out of curiosity. Meru even hummed the song despite this being the first time she even heard it. Pyonta poked her, asking if she wanna have a look. "Ah, of course. Let's go, Pyonta~" Meru answered as she hopped on Pyonta's back. The two then tried to get closer to the caravan with the young lady still humming.

    "Ooo boi..."
Much to their surprise, the already dense crowd made them unable to get even closer to the caravan. "Sorry, mate," Meru apologized to her Pokémon partner as she stood on Pyonta's back. Good thing she understood her tho. And yes, Meru felt much better because she finally could see whatever attracted this much crowd.

"Good day, Kotona!" someone called as the caravan approached. "What grand adventures are you planning to tell us today?"

"Are you gonna perform 'Princess Kaguya and the Five Knights'? a girl asked.

"Or 'The Quest of the Dragon Warrior'? a boy asked. The play in question was very popular with boys because of the diverse array of martial arts.

Kotona just smiled. "We plan to perform both of those, and one more brand new story."

Is this... the famous Ayane Company them people have been talking about? Meru wondered as she jumped down from her horse. She then put Pyonta in her Pokéball and ran to get even closer to the caravan.
"Excuse me, can you tell me what's going on here?" she asked a random someone among the crowd.

(Fun fact: Meru is a traveler from another region, she probably doesn't know about Ransei's Pokéball counterpart.)

"The Ayame Company is one of the best known theater troupes in Ransei, traveler." the man replied. "It warms my heart to see the theater caravans again, after Nobunaga outlawed the theater."

"Once you see Ranseian theater, you won't soon forget the experience." an old woman agreed.

Applause filled the air as Kotona, now carrying a harp-like instrument, arrived on the stage. "Thank you all." she began. "If this is your first time seeing a theatrical performance here in Ransei, allow me to explain a few of the traditions and customs you will see."

Murmurs filled the air as Kotona showed the harp to the audience. "First, the narrator--who may or may not be named depending on the play--plays the vina, a kind of ancient Ranseian harp, to add ambiance and character to the spoken words. There is also a chorus of musicians and occasionally speakers to assist the narrator, who may also interact with the action taking place. It is not unheard of for the characters to sing in the middle of dialogue, and entire story beats are often conveyed in song. Props and sets are often brought on and taken away in a moment's notice. If a Pokémon or spirit is needed in the storyline, they are usually portrayed by puppets--the larger ones operated by several puppeteers in plain view of the audience, and voiced by the narrator. Even though you will very plainly see the stage ninjas at work creating the play's world, remember that they are shadows, and therefore unseen to you."

She readied the vina to play. "One major difference between Ranseian tradition and other ancient forms of theater is that girls were allowed to perform onstage alongside the boys. The girls in Ranseian stories are not dancing princesses waiting to be rescued by any stretch--they are just as strong, and just as important, as the boys. Our first story concerns a brave prince, and his long quest to liberate Ransei from two demon-like brothers...please enjoy 'The Journey of Prince Mamoru'.

With that, she started the tune "Beautifly Lingers Over Spring Flowers" as her overture for the play...

Meru's eyes sparkled (?) as the play went on. She surely enjoyed the show to the point of her humming the very same tune that the harp player was playing. The humming part was actually due to her habit of singing anytime, anywhere, sometimes without even knowing what she's singing.

"Once, many, many years ago, there was born a son to the Empress Keiko, the ruler of a far away land." Kotona began as the last chord of her overture faded away. "This prince was the second son of Empress Keiko, and he was named Mamoru, meaning 'guardian' or 'protector'. From an early age, he proved himself to have remarkable power, wisdom and courage, and his parents noticed with pride that he was destined to do great things. It was for this reason that Keiko loved him as much, if not more, than she did her elder son."

She smiled and added over a playful chord "His name is not important to us."

The orchestra joined in with a tense stinger. "Now, when Prince Mamoru had come of age, the realm was troubled by a band of outlaws whose chiefs were two brothers, Kumajin and Takeru." Kotona explained over the many tikin--the three stringed Ranseian fiddle. "These rebels seemed to delight in rebelling against the empress, breaking any law they could, and defying any and all authority."

Boos filled the theater at this. "Many had tried to subdue the brigands, but for some reason, all of them had failed." Kotona went on. "This was because they had been granted evil magic from the demon-Pokémon Eternatus."

Meru started to shudder as the story entered its climax. And it's not just her--even Pyonta too, shuddering in her Pokéball.

(speeding things along for the sake of the story)

The audience was spellbound as Kotona, the orchestra, and the actors brought Mamoru's quest to life. Every one of them knew their parts well, and all clearly enjoyed their work at bringing these epic adventures to life.

And Meru was no exception to this one. She too was quite charmed by how everyone taking part of the show brought it up to the audience. She even wondered if they had a slot or two for the crews, at least. But on the other hand, she wasn't sure if she could handle the company's fame and all of the expectations that might come with it.
Oh, well, might as well ask later, she thought.

Applause snapped her to attention--the actors were taking their curtain call!

If she was going to ask if she could join the troupe, now was the best time to ask Kotona. Foreigners joining Ranseian troupes were not unheard of before Nobunaga outlawed the theater.

While the audience were dispersing after the show, Meru looked for the harp player/narrator from before. She stumbled here and there on her way.
    "Ah, excuse me."
    "Whoops, sorry."

Several stumbles with random people later, she managed to find the person she's been looking for.
"Uh... excuse me," she said to the harp player. "Does this troupe have a slot or two for, uh, new crews?"
