to elaborate more on my theme ig?? i think it would also be kinda interesting if every part of the region that was land based was very different from each other?? like they all had different cultures and stuff idk ill Think more on it

yeah daimax is dynamax and trust me my dude i hate the concept as much as the next guy but if we wanna make our gyms unique from each other this can be like. the only gym and only place in the region u can do it. ive been to the stadium many times and i think it could fit some huge Pokémon and be hype as hell but otherwise no more daimax. bye bye daimax

I feel like having the mechanic that was the 'main mechanic' of a region show up in exclusively one gym at one point in the entire game would be...weird. This mechanic, which was the big one for a previous game, was bothered to be put in the game just for this one gym. I'd rather just say bye bye to dynamax, personally.

cries like someone who actually really enjoy the Dynamax mechanic

I wasn't sold on the unity theme before, but I am now. My one problem though, is that the two irl counties of this region- the U.S. and Canada- are actually very buddy buddy with each other. Just seems weird to me to base the region off counties having beef when the irl countries don't have any. But that's just me.

I do like the idea of the southern and northern side of the lakes being very different from each other. Obvious idea: the southern part could be very urbanized and have a lot of the bigger cities and towns (because U.S.) and the northern portion is instead mainly wilderness and smaller towns (because Canada).

The longer this goes on the less plausible my pirate idea sounds. Goodbye, oh pirate crew. You will be missed.

Since there are five Great Lakes, it seems likely that we're going to include five different lakes in our region, likely featuring a lot of water-based travel and exploration as a result. While I'm all on board with this aspect, it would be hard not to make the region seem kind of boring unless we find a way to make each of the lakes feel distinct from each other. One idea that popped into my head is that the water from each lake is a different color to make them pop (likely with lore reasons involving the local legendaries or something). We don't even have to go with unrealistic colors, either. We could have one be white water, a couple different shades of blue and one that's green, or something like that. Either way, I do think that it would be a good idea to have water-based exploration be a major part of the region and we could bring back some of the old ways of traversing water that aren't used in the more recent games, such as whirlpools, waterfalls and diving, and probably add some more ways to make traveling the lakes seem more unique.

    I REVIVE THEE!

So um, I didn't really have anything prepared I just wanted to tell this back into memory and outside Discord. BUT I CAN WING IT LET'S GO!

As previously stated by myself and others, the lakes need to be a very prominent part of this region. We're talking almost Hoenn levels of water here. Probably not that much but still a lot of water. And now that random encounters are gone, that will be MUCH less annoying.

While all references to water traversal have been about HMs (really just names), I want to point out that HMs are dead. So we need to come up with something akin to Poke Rides and the Flying Taxi. So how about something I like to call the Lapras Cruise Co.? Basically it's similar to the Poke Rides, except it's just Lapras (you get a bike on land) and it has all the water traversal abilities (Surf, Waterfall, Dive, and possibly Whirlpool). But to balance it out, how about you have to unlock them throughout the game? Like maybe this Lapras is new to the company and has to be taught these abilities as you go?

Alternatively, we could also just build off of the Rotom Bike in Sword & Shield and just make some sort of awesome bike replacement that can also go underwater somehow. Look idk what to do here but HMs don't exist anymore so we have to come up with something.

We've also been spitballing a few ideas for the starters on Discord, but that's not something we need to really talk about yet. It's mainly just throwing stuff around right now anyway (Fire Football Goat FTW).

Do we want a big gameplay gimmick? It's basically a staple of the series at this point, but I know some of you don't like that, and it'll just complicate things anyway.

OOOOOOOOHHH I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING AS I WAS TYPING!

How about some form of underwater battles? I have no idea how this would work as the theme just popped into my head (along with an underwater gym). I thought first that maybe it could be like Sky Battles but for aquatic Pokémon? Then that made me think of something else; type-specific battles? Like certain types of battles where only specific types are allowed? I realize the longer this goes on that this is probably a dumb idea so forget this entire paragraph. Or feel free to workshop it idrc I'm not a leader I'm a dreamer.

Uhhhhh, barrel Pokémon that likes to throw itself off waterfalls.

Lake Superior is described (at least to me in elementary school) as looking like a wolf, so let's change that to a Lycanroc. No idea for the other ones but two of them are just named after their locations (Michigan and Ontario) so maybe we could name them after cities?

for some reason I have yet to comment on this thread (mostly bc I hang out at discord), so I shall now share me thoughts here too:

region name: While the etymology be nice, I really suggest not having a hard consonant cluster in the name...thinking about it, out of all of the major Pokémon regions, only Kanto, Almia, Oblivia and Ransei have clustered names; and those be quite easy to say, compared with a nasal-approximant cluster like <nl> (though 'tmay just be me slightly biased opinion that it just doesn't sound... right...)

Chicago: May or may not affect much, but if we were to make a region based on the Great Lakes, Chicago would actually be quite, how do I say it, non-central? It'd be at the far southern tip of the map (well unless we pull a Pallet Town and pull it up north to Milwaukee; and then maybe move Milwaukee to Green Bay). Then again, Wyndon also be at Galar's extremities, so I reckon it be good~

starter town: Usually in Pokémon games the player's hometown be really far-flung, with merely a route or two connecting it to other places; from Pallet to Littleroot to Aurora to Vaniville to Postwick, they all be isolated and (with some exceptions) quite small... So what if we went against the grain and chose a big city that be quite connected to other urban areas? For some reason starting in Detroit feels like a fun idea, and it gives one four different possible routes: southeast to OH-PA-NY, northeast to ON-QC, west to IL-WI and east Michigan, and north to the rest of Michigan and Thunder Bay~

lake names: saw this one last and wanted to add to it... so lakes Michigan and Ontario, hmm... Well since Ontario be the last of the five lakes before going to the sea and also hosts the Niagara, I'd either recommend naming it the same as said waterfalls or using some sort of synonym of 'lowland' (similar how the Netherlands was named)~ Lake Michigan, I reckon since it be where the big cities in the western part of the region are, maybe name it aptly (with some name like Lake Superior Coross or The Deep, or sth; ehh I not be good at names)~

Discussion on this has been rather stagnant lately, so let's try to get things going again. Anyone who feels comfortable with map making should make their own rough designs for what the region as a whole might look like and share them here, so that we get talking on how to fill in those maps with towns, routes, etc.

hm, okay then; lemme send those things I placed on Discord:

note: I moved Chicago to Milwaukee and Milwaukee to Green Bay so that those places could be placed on the map; this is attested as Pallet Town is based on Machida but is located in Shizuoka instead of Tokyo... Also I recommend "Detroit" as the starter town so that the path kinda branches out instead of being linear~

I don't like the idea of riding a lapras, epecially without swimming/diving gear. Plus Lapras would have to probably be Dynamaxed to be considered cruise ship sized. Maybe if it were called Lapras Dinghy, or Submalapras.

    Alternative Pokémon to use instead:

•Dynamax Dewpider for diving, doesn't last long. Or maybe normal sized, and gives divers a bubble helmet.

•Cramorant that you feed Pikachus/eevees and in return it shoots you to the bottom of the lakes. Diving gear already on.

•Wishiwashi that form a huge diving bell or submarine around the player.

Can't punch people online unless you battle them. Also, very rude. And I agree that having yet another Eevee-lution would stink.

Maybe instead of a Pokémon, the diving/swimming gear could be something that players just have on their own, kind of like the bike and running shoes? The player would then swim around upright using breaststroke and just submerge to dive.

Okay I just came up with a whole thing for story.

Personally, and I don't know how many people agree with me, I loved that the story of Sword & Shield focused on the gym challenge rather than he big world-ending stuff. It was simple and refreshing. So why can't we do something like that? We don't need a big villainous team, we don't need a huge, verge-of-apocolypse story, just a simple story about exploring the region.

And I don't mean just repeating Sword & Shield and making the gym challenge a huge sporting event again. I'm more thinking along the lines of nature.

Basically, the main theme of this story would just be exploring and getting back to nature. There's a lot of wilderness in this region (to my knowledge), and having that just kind of be there for the sake of being there just seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

This would also mean the evil team for this region isn't anything super threatening. Something more like Team Skull or Team Yell (PIRATE TEAM HAS A CHANCE AGAIN!).

Now I could easily be very in the minority with this. I get that. But I personally believe Pokémon doesn't need all this intense stuff. At the end of the day, Pokémon is always about collecting creatures, exploring the region, and becoming champion. Why does it need to try to be anything more than that?

I like the idea of the gym challenge being a big emphasis of the story, but I also still like the thought of evil teams with fairly big goals. At the very least to more of a degree then Team Skull/Yell. Perhaps I'm sticking too much to the Order/Chaos idea thing, but hear me out.

The Gym Challenge in Meroi (i'll just call the region this for now for convenience sake) is, in some way, significantly woven into and important to the region, even more so then usual, making both evil teams (if there are several) naturally have goals involving them, having the villains right in the path for the player to encounter instead of having to go out of the way for such.

While I'm posting, a few notes I've discussed on the discord. I feel like having gym leaders be limited to two or three types instead of just one could lead to a bit more variety and interesting themes, such as a museum gym leader who uses rock and ghost types.

Another thing that we could potentially contribute to what we're doin' is the Rust Belt~ The big cities in the region are stagnatin', people are fleein' in waves (could tie in with Comet's idea of explorin' the wilderness, bc the cities are currently a dump), less money loot, lots of abandoned factories and dilapidated buildings, etc. etc.

    WOOOOOOOOOSH! Consider yourself revived, thread.

I like the idea of some (not necessarily all) of the big cities being kind of run-down and not in great condition. I'm mainly basing this off of the fact that Detroit and Chicago are both not great places to live atm. And yeah, it would really make the nature theme I mentioned work well. And to tie this in further with Jup's idea of starting in a big city, maybe that's why you leave in the first place. Though personally, I don't like the idea of starting in a place that's centrally located because I feel like that'll just make it harder to structure everything. Like if you can go to several different places, how do we make sure you go to the first gym first? Linearity works well for Pokémon imo.

Okay on to the fun part. I came up with an odea while talking gym leader designs with @NyxieRina . Why not some sort of TV aspect? Like certain TV shows and programs are a major part of the culture of the region? I have no real-world information to use for this to make sense, but one of the gym leaders that @Skittle and I have come up with (now with help from aforementioned NyxieRin) was a weatherman. And some of the other designs aren't that much of a stretch to imagine having their own shows as well. A Water-type gym leader obsessed with myths and legends who has a monster-hunting show. A nice Ice-type motherly lady who has a cooking and/or baking show. An Electric-type adrenaline junkie who loves chasing storms. And more. Maybe the player and their friend rival set out on their journey wanting to make some sort of nature show? Or maybe there's a show documenting kids' journeys through the Pokémon League? Now, this idea in its current state kind of depends on using the gym leader ideas we already came up with, but it can definitely be tweaked if we decide to use other designs. But it could still work.

Seriously though most of the concepts we came up with could easily have their own shows I have no idea how that happened

The one key to railroad any Pokémon game: fuckin' HMs

How 'bout the first gym could be in the starter city à la B2W2; with the player havin' to defeat the gym leader bc he's part of some crime gang or the evil team; then because of their potential some random/important guy pushes the player to take the gym challenge?

Also maybe the friendly rival (wait do we have one) could be makin' a vlog, and considering the idea before that not all events should need the player, the times between battlin' the rival could be him/her looks for interestin' events to film elsewhere~

Having the first gym leader be mean/evil would be a big twist on the usual concepts of friendliness. I rather like the idea,
For the vlog, I like the idea of checking for news/lore tidbits in some sort of vlog/blog fashion from your regional digital device (poketch-like thing).

I would like to set up a proper poll to figure out what themes we want to include in the region as our base concepts since figuring this out can help flesh out Pokémon concepts as well. Could you folks PM me your region themes when you have a moment? Since they have been left to stew for a while I think it would be nice to get some solid picks.
