With the reveal of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, we got a good look at the visual style the game will be providing. In many ways, it is quite faithful to the original games, having a more "chibi" style in the overworld, but larger character models in battle. As is the fashion with modern Pokémon, fans are already debating this style.

What are your thoughts on how the game looks visually? Is there another game's style that would have fit the game better?

I'm probably one of the weird ones that actually likes it, and finds it cute.

I really like the style, someone described it as toy like, and that might be part of the appeal to me. and the overworld looks great, an upgrade to the original tilesets, but much higher quality

I don't like it, I find it ugly tbh. This art style in the overworld is just not my thing, these odd looking bobbleheads really don't look good to me if they're trying to be faithful to the originals in that way it just don't look good in 3D I think. Luckily games are more than just graphics and since they're remakes we generally know what they're about I have a feeling they'll still be fun to play.

I personally don't really like the bobblehead look they have with them. Looks oddly polygonal to me. This is coming from someone who loves Wind Waker and the Link's Awakening HD graphics. Maybe some brighter shading would help?
Now that I've looked at it more, I personally would liken the style more to Animal Crossing than Awakening.

i think the chibi/diorama style is cute in concept, but it just feels kinda jarring after we got swsh?? also something about the colors and how saturated everything is makes all the characters look plastic-y in a way that feels cheaper than similarly styled games like links awakening hd. say what you will about gen 6 but how that generation handled the chibi style with expressive movements and less weird proportions was much better than my initial impressions. maybe i'll warm up to the style because its truly adorable!! but imo it makes bdsp feel more like a spin off or even a cheap 20$ eshop title rather than a mainline Pokémon game

if they made full body models for battle....... why not use those?? even then i have some gripes with those in battle models and the fact that Pokémon masters, a spinoff mobile game, makes dawn and barry look better than on an hd console but the silver lining is that we arent stuck with the fisher price little people all the time. yay i guess

but on a semi related note, the little details (like the lakes reflection, the lights in jubilife city) and atmosphere and lighting looks gorgeous so far

I, for one, like this new style. It's not a style I would want moving forward with the series but I feel that it fits these games perfectly. Something everyone seems to have forgotten is that Gen IV already had an awkward chibi ascetic to its overworld sprites and this is a surprising faithful adaptation of that look into 3D.

I love it! It reminds me of Link's Awakening remake, and it fits how the sprites would have looked if they were lifted directly from their source material into 3D (as BZ mentioned).

I personally like this art style a lot. I think it's really charming and it's trying it's best to look like how D/P originally looked like. I think some of the colors on the overworld are kind of off, but that's nothing more than a nitpick.

For these specific games, I think the chibi style works fantastically. They're a remake of Pokémon games that had a chibi style, and it would be a little jarring to have such a drastic change in art style from the originals to the remakes. I think it's a nice homage, and makes it so that it feels different enough from other Pokémon games that I won't feel like I'm just replaying the same game over and over again.

(I figured I should return and post my opinions on the art style as well)

The more I look at the art style, the more I like it. While it is certainly not the direction I was expecting, the attention to detail is nice and the overall style is pretty cute. If anything, the style is certainly faithful to what the original games looked like, which I do not mind.

^I agree with this part of your statement wholeheartedly. At the end of the day, I hope the games are fun and have sufficient content.

I like it personally. It keeps the games looking more like the originals while still giving it more of a modern touch at the same time. I understand that many people wanted it to look more like sword and shield in some ways, but honestly I feel that this was the best route they could have gone with it.

I think the chibi style is an interesting take. Sure its not the Switch style HD remake we wanted but its servicable.

What I HATE about it is the HANDS. They just look so gross and weird. Usually when youre doing a chibi style theres a few ways you can do that. One is to have no fingers, just a little nub or circle to represent a hand. Two is to have minimal fingers, like mittens where its only the thumb seen and other dingers appear when needed. Three is the stubby star fingers, theyre basicly like tiny little spikes at the end of a nub, it may not be all 5 but its enough to sell the idea.

BDSP has big sausage seperated fingers on their models. Maybe if they were full scaled it wouldnt look so jarring but on tiny cute models like those it just looks disgusting. I keep thinking of Salad Fingers when I look at them for too long. The xharacters are so Tiny I dont see why they have to give the hands so much definition. Its not like theyre communicating in sign language and all the fingers need to be there to communicate properly. The fact that they still remain in the latest trailer of BDSP really irks me.

Overall i think its fine but I just really hate the hands
