semi obligatory character thread

Secret LV Member boss fights would be brilliant. If we had something like a Battle Tree or arena or a silly full postgame area to do with LV we could probably have people submit their own trainersonas, and I'm sure some artists would volunteer for those who don't want to draw their own.
If I remember, we also have these badges on LV...? They stopped being a thing a while back and I don't know if we're allowed to use them for the region, but we have one of each type.
I can do some badge designs. I like them. Do we have a specific theme we want to go for with those (like how all of Unova's badges are long skinny things)?

 

@Skittle So I just had an idea for Lachlan. What if he's just a full-on monster hunter? Like he's constantly going out tracking and researching and investigating possibly sea monster-esc Pokémon? We could also roll farther with Maverick's meteorologist idea and make a whole TV network, and give Lachlan his own show about thia stuff.

 

The villains should be corporate execs trying to take over the TV station.

 

Ooh, this thread looks like so much fun! I love designing characters and seeing other people's design processes.

Are other people allowed to help draw/design these characters? I'd love to help and give some ideas.

My first contribution to this thread!

There were a bunch of Gym Leader Ideas on this thread and all of them were pretty cool but the one that really got my attention was the potential Water Type Gym Leader. The one with a connection with a 'Lochness Monster' type Pokémon. I took that idea and decided to make two interpretations of that concept.

(fair warning the descriptions get a bit rambly)



I forgot if the thread had a name for them so I'll just be calling them Artsy and Sciency respectively.

Artsy is a lore keeper/scholar type figure. He knows of the legend of the lake and while he's interested in studying it, he also appreciates the air of mystery and awe that Pokémon creates in a more metaphorical way. He's inspired by Wallace, Juan, Eusine (the guy interested in the legendary beasts) as well as anime Bill. He's very fancy and sophisticated and sees the world in an artful way. Perhaps he's a painter aside from being a scholar and a gym leader. He fights elegantly and uses beautiful water-type Pokémon such as Milotic, Gorbyss, Primarina, and Jellicent. Maybe if there's a contest circuit he could also be someone to find there like your mom in DPPt? But I think that would just make him a bootleg Wallace-

Sciency is a conspiracy theorist/researcher/diver figure. The lake where his gym is placed has always fascinated him and was his inspiration to become a researcher and battler, so he can find that Pokémon and battle it himself. He's inspired by the Regional Professors, Molayne, Sophacles, and Clemont. He's not a professor but is quite active in the academic field and makes regular discoveries regarding the sea and water types. He sees battling as a formula and a problem to solve. He fights analytically and water types that reflect his more nerdy nature such as Carracosta, Slowking, Toxapex, and Dracovish. I imagine he'd be in close contact with the regional professor and maybe he'd even be the one to give you a Dive TM (if that exists) since he's a diver as well. Actually, now that I think of it, no water-type trainer has ever been a diver, they're all just swimmers...

Either way, I can see both of them playing out the same potential Post-Game Legendary story involving the monster of the lake. If you go and meet them after becoming champion, they will mention that they have gotten a good look at the monster, the best they've ever seen since they began studying/watching them. They will say something about how maybe something has changed to induce this behavior. They will ask you for your help to investigate (as extra backup since as the champion you're plenty strong) and the two of you will set out to a post-game underwater labyrinth containing the monster of the lake, which is a legendary Pokémon. When you catch it, they will be amazed that you did so and that now they can properly study it (with your permission of course). Even though their main obsession is now in your party they decide to remain by the lake, having grown fond of it and the gym they run. They might give you an extra item after that (some kind of rare water type object (maybe something to power up the legendary???)) and you go on your way.

Anyway, that's what I've got for this. What do you think?

I really like the sciency one over the artsy one. Artsy is fine but it just feels way different from the initial concept. Which is also fine I guess.

I should put out there that these are definitely not set on stone. These concepts were just Skittle and I going a bit overboard with character ideas.

Also we named him Lachlan.

Also also I came up with the idea that he's a straight up monster hunter. And since we have a weatherman already I kind of like the idea of making television a big thing in this region. Meaning: monster boy here would get his own show.

 

Hehe, yeah. I got excited an just dove (heh) head first into it.

I must have skipped over the monster hunter thing. Ill try to make a version more based on that later. It should be fun

 

Just a little idea I had for the fighting and psychic type twins

(cheebs cause why not)



What if the twins had some kind of Yin-Yang symbolism in their design. Yin-Yang is all about balance and balance is something that can be applied to both physical prowess and the body as well as mental capabilities and the mind. Since there are two sides to it I thought it would fit! I decided to try messing with possible hairstyles cause that sounds fun.

I matched the sides to the corresponding gender. Yang is light, masculine, and bold so it'd go with the male fighting type twin while Yin is dark, feminine, and subtle so it'd go with the psychic type twin. For Trixie (that's her name right?) I shaped it into a big side bang that's heavy on the bottom with a little swirl to make up the dot. For Remy, I couldn't decide whether the faux-pompadour or the other sidebang would work for him (also with the swirl cause there's a theme). Maybe with their colors, they could have a similar scheme? With Remy having a light color scheme with dark accents and Trixie having the reverse.

Anyways, thats just my random idea for the twins. Tell me what you guys think!

 

I have more stuff to post!

First off is my interpretations of the gym leaders Aurora and Maverick


I mostly followed Skittle's design but with my style and a few tweaks here and there. Auroras fur collar is actually based on a Delibird's feathers(?) And she had some Eiscues on her sweater sleeves just for the heck of it. I imagine shed have more ice type/christmas themed Pokémon in her sweater design. I made Maveric's pony tail permanently swoop up with its end poking out from behind his shoulder jsut because I think its funny. The tie I gave him is supposed to be Rayquazza flying up to 'eat'the meteor on the knot of the tie lol.

Second is a character design I made.



This was my interpretation on the angsty teen Champion idea. I named them Channel (Like a Channel of water or channeling your inner strength and focus) and made them androgynous looking since I can't decide on a gender. They have soft wavy hair like a wave (probably in dark blue) that usually covers their right eye. They have a permanent face shadow too that doesnt go away. They have a big coat both as an elude to Bede (who was a slight inspiration to the design) and also to hide their silouette, which can give them a more mysterious and intimidating appearance (plus they can hide in it if they dont want anyone to disturb them). Heeled boots also make them more intimidating and gives them more height so they dont appear too small.

I'm not sure if this is angsty enough for the angsty teen champion or if some things just dont fit right. They can probably be used somewhere else if ever, maybe as a rival? But theres that.

Lastly we have my new interpretation of Latchan(?)



I had a fuller sketch of him aside from this one but that one was too messy and looked too much like Maveric. I took lots of inspiration from the Sciency concept I made prior. He wears a diving suit since hes interested in sea monsters specifically and needs ro be ready to dive in at a moments notice (also the severe lack of divers in water type specialists). Though instead of the goggles Sciency had, he now has a full scuba mask better suited to diving. On top of it he wears a flannel shirt with a gym insignia on it both as a way to look 'decent' and to show that hes an official gym leader and not just some rando. Hed probably also have lits of misclelaneous hunting gear and a camera in a full body shot.

Should I have done this in parts? Maybe, but thats everything I've drawn out for this since the last post. What do you guys think? Please let me know!

Channel looks awesome, but yeah maybe not angsty enough for that angle. Not that we have to make the champion super angsty anyway. I could definitely see him as a rival or a villainous team member too.

Aurora looks adorable but personally, I always imagined her with glasses. Not big nerdy glasses but small ones. Not like tint granny glasses though like somewhere in between. Other than that (which is totally a "me" thing) I have no complaints.

Maverick fun. Looks like that mix of quirkiness and professionalism Skittle was going for. That tie design is genius.

 

I'm glad you like my designs and concepts! To be honest I wasnt sure how you would take some of the designs and ideas you had (I'm mostly saying you since youre the one who started this thread and the main designer here) so I'm glad you like them.

I havent seen sailor boy Lachlan (hah finally spelled it correctly) which is a bit of a shame. But maybe there can be an itty bitty reference to it if youd like? Either with him wearing the sailor cap and/or collar in his design or his flannel having the same color scheme as one.

Theres three female champions actually. Cynthia, Iris and Diantha. Though I agree we need more female champions. I just made my champion concept gender ambiguous so itd be easy to shift it from one to another. I havent thought much about possible Galar ties. I imagined the champion being a foreigner to the region but still quite young. I know Allister is a little baby but it feels weird to make Channel another possible baby gym leader.

I havent been thinking Evil Team much, since theres not much to go off on and the rest of the threads seem dead with ideas, but I guess that could work. I miiiight post here again of possible ideas (once i come up with them and once some kind of plot has been established)

 

Posting again so soon because I had an Idea and it must be shared.

So we already have some concepts for the Twin Gym Leaders, Trixie and Remy, the Psychic and Fighting type gym leaders. Well. I just had some ideas that might mix them up a bit.

1. Swap the genders. Make Trixie male and Remy female. I know we've just recently had a fighting type girl and a psychic type male (Bea and Avery) but itd be a neat mix up from the typical gender interpretations of the type.

2. Swap their personalities. Imagine a fighting type user, who instead of being a mass of muscle and bravado is actually quiet and more thoughtful. Martial arts is a dicipline and so he respects that and is more subdued outside of fighting. Imagine a Psychic type user who instead of being reserved and quaint is all about the show. Psychic types can read minds, bend things, play tricks, they know whats on your mind and thus they arent afraid of you and you should be afraid of them. Its something thats never been seen before in Pokémon and it would be amazing to see. If we do use the yin yang symbolysim i did a few posts back we might have to change the hair styles a bit but it could work.

3. Change the types. Fighting and Psychic duos are boring and there are regions where they both exist in the same stature (both gym types on Hoenn and Kalos, both Elite four types in Johto and Unova). You know what types haven been together in the same stature and count as a duality? Normal and Ghost. Think about it, they are the only two types that are immune to each other, which would be amazing for twins to use since they can be synchonized amd wont have the chance of hurting each other. Compared to fighting and psychic, normal and ghost dont get as much representation in gyms or elite four members. Plus it would also make them even more distinct from Tate and Liza since they dont share type specialties anymore. Wed have to think of different names for them for it to work but it still can! This is probably the most bonkers out of the random ideas Ive thought off but it is the most fun.

Anyways thats all I've got. What do you guys think? I think that their initial concept is fine and I dont mind if these ideas are ignored (theyd just be my own personal ideas then) but I want some second opinions

 

Sorry for the double ping but I just now realized why you thought Channel was a previous Galar Gym Leader. The belt is just a belt. I just like the style of the Pokéball belt and wanted to use it. It didnt help that it has such a triangular design which matches with their coat.

Maverick has become my favorite design out of everyone and somehow I managed to speedrun my full body concept for him



The colors are from Skittle's original drawing (which I had only discovered as I was drawing him ._. ) with my style and flare. I kept the swoopy ponytail I gave him in my sketch alongside the Rayquazza tie (though hes now firing a hyper beam at the meteor instead of eating it). He's got the Gym symbol on the left shoulder of his coat and has some fun cloud socks on his feet. The gym badge I made up on the spot with the pair of wings and indents of air. Lemme know what you guys think of my rendition.
