    The next step was coin flip. Between Mark and Kenji, the latter wasn't sure who got the heads and who got the tails. Not that it mattered anyway.

    The referee showed the boys a standard coin from Kanto. "Pikachu face is heads...Kanto League crest is tails. The winner of the toss goes first, but they may choose to defer if they like."

    "Heads!" Mark calls the toss as the referee flips the coin...

    The referee checks the coin when it lands on the floor. "Ruby has won the toss--do you still want to defer to Sapphire?"

    "I'm fine with going first." Mark assures the referee. "This way, I can walk him through how the game flows."

    "All right, let the guided match begin!" the referee calls, spurring Mark to flip up his active card--Eevee the Evolving Apprentice

    (That's the right one.)

    "Now, on your turn, there are several things you can do." Mark explains. "But you always begin each turn by drawing a card. If you can't do this, your opponent wins. This is commonly called 'decking out'."

    Mark nods. "After you draw a card from your deck, you can do several things. You can attach an energy card to any of your Pokémon, whether they are active or in reserve."

    He attaches a Fairy Energy to his Eevee. "You can put more Pokémon on your bench, as space permits. You can evolve any of your Pokémon so long as they have been in play for at least one turn, retreat your Pokémon if you can satisfy the retreat cost, play Trainer cards, or use Pokepowers, Pokebodies, or Abilities. Once you've done all of that, the last step is to declare an attack. But you can defer an attack at any time. If you are going first and it is your first turn, you can't attack."

    He looks over his hand. "I can't do anything else right now, so I will end my turn."

    "I see," Kenji nodded as he looked back at his active cards. "So... I can attack now, right?" He simply had to make sure because it's the first turn and Mark was already done with his.

    "In that case, uh..." the young man studied his active card once more while trying to remember how that random girl from the game he had watched before said it. "Flame Squire Charmander uses Ember." It was then followed by discarding the Fire Energy card that was previously attached.

    Mark attached three damage counters to his Eevee. "When your Pokémon takes damage, you attach the appropriate number of damage counters to it. When the damage matches or is more than the HP on the card, it is knocked out, and discarded along with anything attached to it."

    He next shows you a beautiful glittering Sylveon card, and overlays it on top of the Eevee. "By Energy Evolution, Eevee the Evolving Apprentice evolves to Sylveon, the Singer of Light.

    He then plays a Potion from his hand, healing 20 damage to his new Sylveon.

    Whelp, Sylveon already. Did Mark just anticipate a Machop or something? The fun had just started this way.

    Despite the slight shock, Kenji drew a card and studied his hand again. "By evolution..." he stacked a Flame Knight Charmeleon card over his Charmander one. "We just do it like this, right?"

    With evolution out of the way, Kenji proceeded to do the following:
    • Played the Pokemaniac Bill card and drew 2 more cards (if I get the Bill card right, that is);
    • Put two Basic Pokémon cards on the bench; and
    • Attached a Fire Energy card to his Charmeleon.
    All while hoping none of them would break the rules.

    (Feel free to call Kenji out if he does break the rules by any of those actions, by the way.)

    Mark attached another Fairy Energy to his Sylveon. "Sylveon the Singer of Light uses Curly Ribbon."

    "Sapphire takes 30 damage." the referee announces

    (in this version of the game, moving an opponent's energy around like you do with the real version of the attack would count as opponent manipulation)

    Ah, darn, Kenji winced as he attached three damage counters to his Charmeleon and moved the Fire Energy from it to one of his benched Pokémon cards. "I think I'll pass for now," he raised his free hand (as in the body part not holding the cards) afterwards. "Did I get the Curly Ribbon part right, by the way?"

    "You can move your own energy cards as a response to that--what you did was fine." Mark replies. "The PTCGA took issue with the original version of the attack, which would have me doing that for you. They saw that as illegal opponent manipulation, and erattaed the card."

    (The Six Spirits have a video series explaining why a card might be banned, ways cards have worked around that, and notable cards banned for each reason)
