Not all of our companions in video games make it through our adventures, at times sacrificing themselves for your cause, simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or even losing their lives at your hand. Are there any party member/companion deaths that have stuck with you for any reason? Perhaps the loss was significant for you, or maybe their end wasn't executed so well... Pun most definitely intended~ Be sure to put your examples under a spoiler in case others have yet to play, regardless of how old the game is! Fable II Spoiler My personal example is from Fable II, a game I've only just recently played (I managed to nab a 360 from my brother). Puck, my poor puppy pal... I didn't realise how much I depended on the dog companion until he was gone. I ended up choosing wealth after defeating Lucien and quickly regretted it. My first preference was love but I ended up feeling torn--how is it right for me to bring back those close to me when I could bring back the thousands sacrificed. I ended up being an ass and giving nobody they wanted. Ended up with Bloodstone mansion though, good enough. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Spoilers for Xenoblade Chronicles. Spoiler Fiora. I mean, yes, she was one of your first party members, but her death hit me hard... even when I literally saw it coming via Shulk's newly-acquired future sight. What really makes this scene so powerful is you know it's coming, but you can't do anything to stop it because of how unusually strong the antagonist Metal Face was (the Manado is supposed to cleave through Mechon, but does nothing to the faced ones for reasons that are hinted at, but are explained later). And after going through most of the game and finding Fiora reborn as an android... Those scenes almost destroyed me emotionally.
As a rule, I generally do not like games in which a member leaves the party, either permanently or temporarily. I am a player who likes to invest time and effort into all of my party members, and to have one of my party members leave later on is not only a wasted effort, but also entails a complete restructuring of my party structure and battle strategy. This is not something I view as particularly productive, so I try not to play games that feature this effect to any large degree. Note: I don't count 'guest party members' in this, because it's known and assumed they will be with your main party for a short time, and then move along elsewhere. Despite that, there are two particular moments of departing party members that I always remember, because of how impactful and distinctive they are. To not ruin the moment, I shall put them in spoiler tags, as is standard. Final Fantasy IV Spoiler After you fight and defeat Cagnazzo, he tries to crush you while still in the room by causing the walls to close in on you, essentially trying to crush your party to death. To avert this, Palom and Porom, the black/white mage twins, stand fast against the wall and cast Break on themselves, turning them to stone, thus halting the wall. It definitely counts as a heroic sacrifice, but seeing those two children just die in front of you like that to save the others is pretty harrowing. Final Fantasy V Spoiler The scene in the Forest of Moore when Galuf fights Exdeath alone. After seeing Exdeath cast the party aside and then attack his granddaughter Krile (who just happened to show up at the time), Galuf goes nuts and attacks Exdeath with everything he's got. What happens is a cutscene battle where you control Galuf fighting against Exdeath. It's particularly notable in that Galuf will keep fighting even when at 0 HP; this is even commented on in-game where Exdeath wonders why Galuf won't die. Ultimately he does, due to exhaustion (the party tries to revive him with every White Magic trick in the book - it doesn't work), though this party departure is mitigated with Krile joining in his place and inheriting all his stats. I was okay with this because, while the plot progressed with the death of a character, stat-wise you still remained the same. ...Of course, when I get around to finishing Etrian Odyssey III, I'm sure I'll have at least two more.
Borderlands 2 Spoiler After killing Angel in her state and Heroes ask themselves what kind of father would do it to their own daughter, Roland says that Jack lost his only chance to awake the Warrior, while he instructed what to do then BAM!, shot straight through the chest from behind, Jack teleported behind Roland and killed him, Lilith tried to step him and she failed and was captured, you could only watch as your friends were taken away from you right in front of your eyes and he still tried to kill you using your Siren friend's power but was teleported away from the place Homefront: Spoiler The moment you are on the San Fransisco bridge you knew you would survive the detonation of the bridge which you sacriced your life for the enemies not to cross the bridge
I-I'm not crying... YOU'RE CRYING!!! Persona 3 (You know who...) Spoiler During the Fortune and Strength Arcana battle without Shinjiro and Ken, you're treated to the heart wrenching loss of Shinji at the hands of Takaya...
Oh I was like... "wha...what the..?" Diablo III Spoiler Leah just becomes Diablo and I was like... "I can't kill here, she is there, I can't do it >.<" NOOO!! (Finally destroyed the beast and accepted Leah's destiny)
Well, yesterday in FE Echoes: SoV, I accidentally went the wrong way and three characters were like "this is the wrong way, bye". I ended up having to fight another two battles to recruit them again. I was pissed as hell.
Spoilers for Inazuma Eleven Go: Spoiler I saw the anime before I played the game, but since I mostly forgot what happened in the anime, I was still really surprised to see Dodge leave my team. He was my strongest striker and my offense was 100% built around him, and to have him just leave... I felt so mad and I honestly didn't want to continue playing the game. Worst thing is, he doesn't return, never...
You do, but it'll take you five chapters until you've recovered the loss in team strength. And that's like, half the game. Yay. Dammit Dodge >_>
Nahh, it's okay, dw. It's just a game. It's just very annoying to have it happen. It's a football game and to suddenly have to rebuild your entire formation after you've gotten adjusted to the other one for a few hours sucks.
