Behold, Monster Hunter's first ever spin-off title to hit Western shores! And it's the amazing RPG that a lot of us have asked for. :D

As one may expect just from looking at it, this game plays very similarly to Pokémon. But there are also a lot of elements from the Monster Hunter games in it as well, such as quests, hunting monsters, stealing eggs, and collecting loads and loads of stuff for combining and forging into better stuff. However, there are also a lot of new mechanics the game introduces due to its different style of game play, and it's all pretty neat in my opinion. In this post, I will be talking about how the game works.

Be advised, this thread will be as spoiler free as possible. Monster Hunter Stories is a new game that I highly recommend playing and seeing the story for yourselves if you're a Monster Hunter/Pokémon fan.

Let's begin with the basics. You start off the game fairly simple, with a standard blue speedy raptor, the Velocidrome. You hatch it from an egg, and by poking the egg in certain spots, it will gain certain stat boosts such as HP, attack and defense. Pretty standard RPG stuff.

Then come the battles, where the real fun starts. You, the Rider, are in control of your own character, but your monster buddy, dubbed the Monstie, moves on its own accord unless you command it to use different skills. Battles work a lot like rock paper scissors. You have three choices to attack an enemy: Power, Speed, and Technical. Power beats Tech, Tech beats Speed, and Speed beats Power. For those who've played Pokémon, the colors also match the fire, water, and grass type match-ups. This is very important to remember, as this will be your main method of attacking enemies.

The monster enemies, meanwhile, tend to use 1 or 2 certain kinds of attack depending on each monster. For example: Your first battle is against the gentle Aptonoth, who tend to only ever use Power attacks. If you or your Monstie go head-to-head with it with a Speed attack, you'll deal more damage. The opposite also holds true, so its a good idea to figure out the patterns of certain monsters to exploit their weaknesses for an easy win.

During your turn, you can also select items, use skills, instruct your Monstie to use one of their skills, or switch out your Monstie with another in your party (You can have up to 5 Monsties at a time). Selecting items or using skills of your own takes up a turn, but you can instruct your Monstie or switch them out on the same turn without consequence. You can only switch out your Monsties once per turn, so choose wisely.

Sometimes after a turn, to spice things up even more, your Monstie will enter a clash with an opponent monster. These can range from mashing the A button to push them back, rotating the analog stick in a breath battle, or pressing between the R and L buttons to overtake them in flight. If you win them, you'll deal damage to the enemy and gain more Bond points.

Being in sync with your Monstie is key to victory. Using skills takes up Bond points, which is accumulated throughout the fight, especially by winning rock paper scissors. If you and your Monstie both select an attack against the same enemy and beats them, you'll initiate a Double Attack, which deals heavy damage and stops the enemy from damaging you, and it also grants you more Bond points. It can be quite tricky to pull this off later down the line, but it's worth it when you do.

If your Bond points are full, you can ride your Monstie to perform a special attack. Each breed of Monstie has their own unique special, and they're all super flashy and high damaging. While riding, you can also attempt to win more rounds of rock paper scissors to power up the special attack up to level 3 (if your lose twice however, you'll be knocked off your mount). Then just hit the big blue button, sit back and watch the fireworks.

As the game goes on, you'll also have access to finding better, stronger monster eggs, which you can find in dens scattered all over the world. You can hatch a dozen eggs at a time, and have up to 200 monsters. It's a good idea to find and hatch as many eggs as possible, as you'll also eventually be able to use spare monsters to power up your favorite Monsties in a system called Rite of Channeling.

How Rite of Channeling works is very simple. Each monster has a unique gene pool, and it looks like a 3-by-3 bingo card. If a Monstie has an empty slot in its gene pool, you can channel an ability from a spare Monstie to fill that empty slot, sacrificing the spare Monstie in the process (you can also overwrite abilities if a slot is already filled).

For example: Your next target for a quest is against a monster that is in a very cold environment, and is also weak to fire attacks. Rather than decide to have either a fire-breathing Monstie or a cold-resistant one, you can instead channel a spare Monstie's fire breath into a cold-resistant Lagombi. And now you have a fire-breathing bunny bear. Never thought I'd be able to say that...

Out in the field, monsters roam around as far as the eye can see, so there are no random battles like in Pokémon (unless you're using Qurupeco's call to summon random monsters to battle). The Monsties you have with you can do all sorts of things out in the field when you ride them around. Raptors can leap over gaps, amphibians and leviathans can swim, big beasts can smash rocks, big-eared monsters can scan the area for enemies and goodies, etc. As far as I know, only the Rathalos can fly. He's not called the king of the skies for nothing.

There are loads of other stuff I could talk about, but I think that about covers the basics. I'd rather not have this one post go for too long... In any case, this is a really great game that I highly recommend you play and experience the story for yourselves. I will admit, there are a few issues with it such as hit detection out on the field and frame-rate drops, but nothing that really takes away the enjoyment of the game overall.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go train my newly-acquired Rathian and find more eggs.

@SnowboundBecca Stories isn't the first Spin off for MH, there are a good handful out there (although mostly in Japan). Stories IS, however, the first spin off to hit English shores. It's also the first MH game to have a anime, with some episodes dubbed (some spin offs in Japan have animated cutscenes).
Good luck with Laeus/Ratha, he's such a cutie (same with Navi, although he took me a LONG time in the anime to like- I prefer the normal Felyne/Melynx)

I have to admit, I am so far enjoying this more than the main series, mostly because this one hasn't managed to frustrate me to no end yet plus the ability to hatch and ride monsters is awesome.

That moment when you finally obtain your Rathalos:

Also, I was wrong about the Rathalos being the only monster that can fly. I have discovered the Yian Garuga (tall purple bullying cousin of the Yian Kut-Ku) can achieve flight as well.

I agree. It would've been awesome to ride a black/gold dragon like that into battle... Well, at least there's DLC, hopefully.

Well, there is another one that can fly, though I only know about it because the shopkeeper gave me a DLC code that allowed me to get its egg early. (Though until I finally get to rarity 5, I can't use it. Seriously, I didn't have to wait long for level 3. Why did 4 take so long?)

I am now at the part of the game where I start encountering Deviljho. I found two of them running around in dens while I was trying to get a Black Gravios egg (I didn't fight them though). I've also seen that they can even invade some battles.

    Even in spin-offs, this big green laser-breathing T-Rex proves to be a party-crasher. >:/

Huh, I have actually been interested in this game, but never knew if it was worth picking it up. Should I just wait till I get one of the newer models of the 3ds/2ds?

This game also has Amiibo functionality, so it's a good idea to have a model that allows you to use that function. Mine is an older model, so I can't use my Rathian Amiibo on it. :(
Regardless, it is a great game that is worth trying, especially if you're a fan of Pokémon or Monster Hunter. Or both. Both is good.

I love MH Stories, I've not had the best luck with getting different species I actually want tho. I picked up a Black Diablos egg at one point and accidentally hit A and picked another egg up instead. I'm currently riding around on mainly on a rathian and a khezu. The khezu is my strongest monster atm sadly, I do not like khezu and I never will never liked it ever since I first played Freedom 2.

The reason for why they're not in the game is fairly obvious, or at least why you can't ride then, if you've played it even for just a little bit, or even just the demo.

Khezu is my least favorite too... Never really liked that thing. I had a Red Khezu for a while before replacing it with a Gypceros and a Nerscylla.

There are a few tricks I've learned while hunting for eggs. If you read the monster's Monsterpedia entry, it will tell you what you need to know about how a particular wild monster retreats to its den. Then there are the Paint Balls, which are best used a few turns before beating a monster (preferably on the third turn after its used). And when a monster luckily retreats, you can use the Rathian/Pink Rathian armor which grants you an ability that lowers the chances of alerting a monster while in its den (There are talismans somewhere that may grant the same effect). Happy hunting!

I already know this stuff, the game gives you tutorials for it, not like I care if I get discovered is easy exp since the monsters usually sitting in the dens are weaklings.

Welp, I've finished the main story of the game. The finale was pretty amazing, which is all I can really say on the matter to avoid spoilers. Though, I only ever died once in the entire game from the final boss using a super OHKO move. I had no idea how to counter it at the time. Not even the vicious Rajang was that much trouble, and that Super Saiyan-looking simian monster hits like a truck.

Now I'm onto the High Rank quests in the post-game. Which means new monsters, new challenges, and hopefully new eggs to add to my collection. Here's hoping I actually get an Elder Dragon onto my team (I really want that Kirin. I've always wanted to ride one of those properly, because it looks like a unicorn. Yes, I know what a Kirin is in mythology, please don't ask).

    Until then everyone.

Update: New free DLC is available. This includes new titles and backgrounds for your Rider Card, as well as new quests and new silver-rank tournaments. One of these said tournaments gives you new monster-themed hairstyles upon completion (Boys get Nargacuga ears and Brachydios pompadour. Girls get Royal Ludroth rolls and Barioth braids.)

In personal post-game news, I finally obtained my Kirin. You can sometimes, if not rarely, find special Elder Dragon eggs in the Labyrinth, whose patterns look shockingly different compared to most other monster eggs, as they have a very distinct star pattern on them. Speaking of the Labyrinth, it is probably the best place to grind for high-rank materials and even stimulants and nutrients for your Monsties in the post game. So, yeah.

That's a pretty standard starting team. Though, it would be best to try and get a Yian Kut-Ku (or it's blue subspecies, if you're lucky), as they're the only technically based monsters around in the starting area. Then again, you'll get one automatically in the story anyway. Velocidrome and Arzuros are your best attackers so far, and Aptonoth can learn healing abilities as it levels up.
