Just wanted to know how many of you actively plays Pokémon as a competetive game. I love competetive Pokémon battling and I already participated in 5 leagues or so. But I only play it competetive on Pokémon Showdown, because I'm not intersted in breeding and grinding. So do you play Pokémon competetive? If yes, do you breed or do you go to Pokémon Showdown to avoid this?
I used to do competitive a long time ago, but after Gen4 I just stopped caring. Pokémon has always had a problem with diversity when it comes to top-level teams; occasionally someone will bring in a Pokémon that people have written off only to win it all, but generally they keep running the same 10-15 Pokémon.
I do play competitive, but mostly on Showdown. It’s easier than hours on hours of breeding for a single Pokémon. That being said, I’m getting better at breeding, so I might assemble a little team for the battle tree.
I do not play competitively. I watch from a distance and laugh at the weird things that emerge from it.
I'm slowly starting to get better at Showdown. I used to only do randbats cause I didn't understand teams but I'm reading more Smogon and understanding more.
I got into competitive Pokémon around the beginning of high school, but didn't get really good until like 3 years ago. Now, I admit I have gotten quite rusty, but Pokémon Showdown has really helped me get into the hang of things and especially has helped me understand Gen 7 changes (my peak so far was at the end of Gen 6). The difference between now and 3 years ago though, was that I'm only good at competitive if it's on Showdown, and I STILL can't grasp IV and EV stuff.
Since early gen 6 i've been playing competitive Pokémon. Used to do it in-game because i couldn't access Showdown, but once i did, I kinda phased out of in-game battling completely because honestly it's a real hassle getting an in-game team and specifically trying to build one in-game. Depending on your luck and how fast the egg in question hatches it can take a long time just to get one mon ready. I haven't played much of competive Pokémon recently, though, but something i do really enjoy doing is playing in a Draft format, which, if you dont know, is where you basically pick 9-12 mons from a list of hundreds of mons, usually in a way where if you want something better, you're gonna have to spend a lot of points. And the main catch is that once you draft a mon, no one else is able to draft that mon. For example, if I draft Garchomp, no one else can. you're supposed to do is find a way to use the mons you drafted to counterteam and beat another person who drafted 9-12 mons. It can get really interesting, as you can see things like Iron Ball Ditto to take advantage of an opponent's more trick room oriented draft, for instance. I'd definitely recommend trying the format out to anyone who is wanting to try something different, although if you want to, i REALLY wouldn't recommend trying to do it in-game unless you have access to something like PKhex or something. having to stress yourself to breed 6 different mons every single week and meticulously EV train each of them in a different way. Especially impossible to do with legendaries.
Of course I know draft leagues. I'm doing this with some friends since a year. We are at the fifth tourmanent currently (But I have never won one. I'm also ending up at the Top 4).
Hey guys. New to the forum here, and am interested in participating in a draft league, but none are running right now. Do you guys/girls know where to find one (or we could create our own)?
I did competitive battling from Emerald until the end of ORAS. I still breed competitive Pokémon as a hobby (trying to complete a living competitive dex). Not a big fan of S/M's competitive format due to how Z-Moves invalidate a lot of defensive switching, but I wouldn't be adverse to getting back into competitive at some point.
You should definitely look to get back! What used to be your favorite Pokémon to use competitively and why?
I actually do breed decently-IVd Pokémon, but mostly so I can say I have competitive shinies, even if I never really end up using them. I prefer playing showdown, since the competition there is tougher and it's far easier to make changes to your team.
I've been playing competitive since Gen 4, but my real start was Gen 5 where I skillfully dodged the Weather Wars and went straight to UU, which to this day is one of my favourite formats, period. I primarily played RU in Gen 6, where I bred my teams too because I genuinely liked them that much. It was a fun time. Gen 7 didn't get me as excited, although if I play comp, it's still RU. Still fun, just not as capturing as Gen 6. Couldn't pinpoint a reason if I tried, though. Nowadays I mostly play draft, where I usually cut playoffs, and yeah, that's about it. Pokémon has always been a bit of a ride, so there ain't really that much to point out.
I’ve been aware of all the mechanics and terms since Gen 6, but I haven’t battled on an actual cartridge due to finding breeding dull. Every now and then I’ll play on Showdown though.
I set up a couple teams back in gen 4 when I was activly breeding and EV training in game. That hept going in Gen5 a bit but kinda fell off after that. I am getting back in the mood for ingame competitive though so I am setting up to do so in Gen8. I play on showdown on and off though, mostly LC and NU
I do play on showdown but I also had the team of my dreams on gen 4-6 so there is that. I play randos, ubers, UU, and LC so if you play any of those do hit me up.
The thread was more focused about competitve battles in the original Pokémon games, but still good to know that you play Pokémon Unite I do play some Pokémon Unite ranked too (I'm Veteran rn)
