Prologue​

"Z, I'm leaving you..."

Z, a Greninja, was shocked to hear those words. He and his girlfriend, Sapphire the Empoleon, had been together for years now! Although they weren't actually dating or had even mated yet, lots of people called them a couple, so they had decided to just stick with that.

"What? You're kidding, right?" he stammered.

"No, Z, I have to leave you. I don't have a choice..." Sapphire said, finding it hard to look at Z directly.

"Why? Can you at least tell me why? Is it because you've fallen for someone else?" Z demanded, his shock and confusion turning into anger.

"I'm leaving because... I'm joining up with Helios."

Z's emotion changed back to shocked and confused. "You're joining up with Helios? Why would you even go onto an Exploration Society with that idiot! He doesn't even go exploring, he just uses the title to get benefits to run his murderous gang!"

"I'm joining up with him because I'm in love with him!" Sapphire yelled. Z went silent, his eyes flashing red with fury.

"You're... in love with Helios?" Z repeated, flatly.

"I'm sorry, but we've been really good friends for a long time, and I don't think I can-"

"Get out."
Sapphire looked at Z, her eyes filled with hurt.

"Z, please. I still want to be-"

"GET OUT!!" Z screamed at Sapphire, launching a Dark Pulse at her. The beam of black rings hit Sapphire, sending her flying out of the front door of Z's house, which was more of a hut than a house. Then Z launched an Ice Beam at the door, freezing over the hole and most of the door. He tried to calm himself down, but the only thing he could think of was how suddenly Sapphire had left him. He couldn't control his anger; his sorrow; his pain, and began to have a violent tantrum. throwing furniture around the room and destroying anything he saw, until the room was nothing but a pile of broken wood and glass. Z sat in the middle, his eyes dark and hollow, as tears poured out that he probably didn't even know were there.

 

Chapter 1

"Reporting for duty, mistress Tiana." Z said flatly, bowing with respect.

"Ah, Z, you here. Eager to start today's mission, I presume?" Tiana, a Tyranitar, smiled as she dug through a chest filled with papers. She knew that Z wasn't the brightest ray of sunshine in her Exploration Society, but she also knew why, and had promised not to mention it. "Ah, here's one for you! There isn't much happening lately, so you'll just be gathering food in Apple Grove."

"Understood, I'll head out right now." Z replied, walking out of the room and into a larger room that had more Pokémon in it. One in particular, a Dedenne, ran up to Z.

"Hey, Z, where're ya headed? I wanna come too, y'know?" the Dedenne said hurriedly.

"I'm going to Apple Grove, Skitts. I don't need your help; it's an easy dungeon." Z explained, walking away from the Dedenne.

"Still in a bad mood, ey? It's been ages, when's he ever gonna come back?" Skitss muttered to himself.


It had been six months since that day when Sapphire left Z. Since Tyranitar's and Pyroar's Exploration Societies, run by Tiana and Helios respectively, were arch-rivals, there was no way they could be together without causing problems. Sapphire understood this, but Z didn't. All he wanted was to be happy with his best friend in the whole world. But she had left him, and taken his world with her. Now, to Z, every day was the same. He'd wake up, go on a mission, return with his objective completed, then sit alone until it was time for supper, to which he attended solely for the sake of not dying of starvation, and then go to sleep. All the other members of the society knew about what had happened that day, but none of them dared to say it to Z's face. Out of everyone at the society, Z was definitely the strongest.


As Z walked through Apple Grove, picking as much fruit as he could, he thought about that day.

"It's been six months since Sapphire left me... Maybe it's time for me to get over it. I'm letting the team down by being so closed off. But, she was my best friend, how was I supposed to-"

Z's thoughts were interrupted by a piercing scream, which came from a clearing up ahead. Dropping his bag, which held all the food he had collected, Z bolted into the clearing. He was shocked to see two Houndoom and a Braixen near a large tree in the center, and the Houndoom were pinning the Braixen down, one clasping her arms while the other secured her feet.

"Looks like we found a hottie, huh?" one of the Houndoom smirked.

"I can't wait to get into this one!" the other Houndoom replied, licking his lips.

"Someone... p-please help me..." the Braixen muttered.

"Save it, sweet cheeks. There's nobody out here but-"

"Bro, you'd better turn around. We aren't alone."
The two Houndoom turned, growling at Z as he stood there, motionless.

"Look pal, we found her first! If you want her, you've got to beat us both!" one of the Houndoom barked across the field.

"Very well." Z said flatly, pushing his hands together. Water began to swirl in them, until there was a throwing star made of water bigger than Z's head in his hands. He quickly threw it at the first Houndoom, the compressed water piercing the Fire/Dark type's side, before it exploded in a mass of water, hurting both Houndoom in the progress.

"Why you little-"

"I have an infinite supply of water, and you two a part Fire type. I believe I've won this match." Z said, creating a second Water Shuriken in his hands.

"OK, OK, we give up! But this isn't the last you've seen of us!" the Houndoom said before fleeing. Z approached the Braixen, who had backed up against the tree and was shaking.

"P-Please don't hurt me..." she stammered weakly. Z just stared at her, his eyes blank and concealing. He was waiting for something he'd knew would happen, so he made his stare a bit scarier by widening his eyes a little. The Braixen's breaths became sharp and short, until she stumbled on one and passed out, falling forward. Z caught her with one arm, and draped her over his shoulder. He headed back the way he had come, seeing that his bag lay there in tattered shreds.

"Those two must have attacked it as they fled..." he mumbled, leaving it there as it no longer served a purpose. As he walked with the Braixen, he began to think about Sapphire again. But instead of thinking about when she had left him, her face was the only thing on his mind. But, for the first time in a long time, it didn't have an affect on him. He simply just left it there, until it slowly fade.


"You found her, you say?" Tiana mumbled, a hand on her chin.

"In Apple Grove, being harassed by two Houndoom. She was fine after I made them flee, but I may have tricked her into passing out so she wouldn't resist coming with me. She needs immediate medical attention." Z explained.

"Right you are. Ryan!" Tiana called. As if on cue, a Reuniclus floated into the room, his smile literally brightening the room.

"Hey hey! Ryan's here and ready to help!" he said, his voice very squeaky.

"Ryan, check over this Braixen. She seems to be injured." Tiana commanded.

"Yes ma'am!" Ryan smiled, taking the Braixen into his arms from Z. He hummed as he floated out of the room.

"Z, may I ask a question?" Tiana whispered once Ryan had left.

"Of course, mistress."

"Why did you help that Braixen? That's very unlike you."

"She needed help, so I assisted her. She also reminded me of Sapphire when we first met." Z smiled. Tiana gasped in shock.

"Z! You said it... You said her name!"

"I figured it was about time I got over her." He smirked, looking at Tiana over his shoulder. The Tyranitar began to tear up.

"Welcome back, Z. My Arceus we've missed you." Tiana sniffed.
