I'll suggest Animal Crossing: New Leaf since no one has mentioned it yet. Add on wise if you have B2/W2 the Dream Radar is neat and can give you Ha Pokémon if you're into them.

    Fire emblem awakening
    Bravely default
    Pokémon x/y

Basicly all of the above. If you are into dungeon crawlers theb you could get Etrian Odyssey. You can try out the demo from the E-store

Well it depends on what types of games you like to play. Action Adventure games are the Seperior genre and hence Link between Worlds is clearly the greatest game on the system to the most cultured and tasteful among us. If you played any Zelda before you know the drill, it is very similar to Link to the Past with the new item shop mechanic increasing your exploration ability. Arguably the greatest of the 2D Zeldas.

Following Zelda you have Luigi's Mansion 2 which is less Adrenaline packed but charming. If you like taking things slow and exploring a lot Luigi's Mansion 2 is the game for you as it is a very detailed game for you to explore.

JRPGS you have a lot of options

Fire Emblem Awakening is a smash hit to most people who have never played a Fire Emblem before. If you have never played a Fire Emblem before you will probably enjoy this one a lot. I didn't enjoy this one as much as other Fire Emblems though because I wear these nostalgia glasses that make me believe games were better in ye olde days.

Bravely Default is the best Final Fantasy game with the dumbest plot and characters and I can guarantee you will enjoy the 1st half of the game before you burn out for the 2nd half. That 1st half is pretty fun though

Devil Survivor Overclocked is fantastic. Mechanics are kinda hard to get used to and a fair amount of situations are a bit more luck dependent then I would like. Definately has better story and dialog then the other JRPGs on the 3DS but the combat system might not be your cup of tea.

Tales of Abyss is awful if you have played Tales of Symphonia. If you have not played Tales of Symphonia, Abyss is definately a game worth looking into maybe the most fun combat system of any JRPG if you know it wasn't so monotonous doing the same Combo for 50+ hours.

Mario and Luigi Dream Team Bros has the greatest combat mechanics of any JRPG ever but I haven't quite finished this one yet so I can't go into too much more detail.

Other games worth getting that aren't JRPGs include

Metal Gear Solid 3: Fantastic game that is kinda a stealth game but not really cause you aren't punished so much if you get caught. Controls take a while to get used to but it works.

Other then that you got your polished Mario Platformers. Ocarina of Time and Starfox remakes that are fantastic, Pokémon, Donkey Kong and Monster Hunter. I wish my country got Rune Factory 4 but it did not.

played symphonia as my very first tales game and didn't think Abyss was awful at all, but it really depends on taste I guess :D however, it does spend a lot of time trying to explain the plot or just the mechanics of the world so you might lose it at that it does have a great gameplay, some good characters and if all the talk doesn't scare you away it have a good plot too.

can't argue with that. Symphonia is the best game in the series *puts on nostalgia glasses*

I was going to suggest Devil Survivor Overclocked, but I'm super happy everyone else already did! xD Don't forget Monster Hunter 3! The 3DS Pokémon rumble wasn't as great as I expected it to be TvT Neither is Gates to Infinity, so I wouldn't go for those despite them being in the Pokémon Franchise. Definitely buy all the games everyone listed! They're great!
