    A Challenge of Wits!

As Kyurem threatens to destroy Unova, it is imperative for your team to outsmart it. By combining your knowledge of various topics, will you be able to defeat it in a challenge of wits?

    Rules and Info

The goal is to earn the most points by correctly answering themed trivia questions as a team.

    - Each week will have a different theme for questions. There will be a total of 10 questions per week, ranging in difficulty from easy, medium, and hard.
    - If your answer is correct, you will earn 1, 2, or 3 points, respectively. If you are incorrect, you will lose points. (Scores can go in the negatives, so be careful!) If your team is unsure of an answer, you can choose not to answer the question.
    - Teams will discuss answers in a thread. Your team leader will send me your answers on Discord or pm by the weekly deadline and a list of those who participated.
    - You are NOT allowed to look up the answers online, as this event is based solely on your team’s collective knowledge. If you are caught cheating, points will be deducted from your team’s trivia score.
    Prizes and Deadlines

Placements are based on which team scores the highest points in the trivia.
    1st place: 80 points
    2nd place: 60 points

Sorry for the delay, but here are the answers and results from week 2’s history trivia!
(My apologies in advance, but I don’t have explanations for all of the answers.)
What nursery rhyme is believed to be based on the Black Plague? Ring around the Rosie
    All teams were correct.

Multiple choice: Which, if any, of the Crusades was considered a success by the Christians? First, Second, Third, all of them were successful, none of them were successful. The First Crusade, because it was the only Crusade that was successful in regaining possession of Jerusalem.
Team Wisdom and Might were correct, and Team Courage chose not to answer.

What was the document forcibly signed by King John in the year 1215 that changed monarchies forever? Magna Carta
    All teams were correct.

What was the purpose of gargoyles? While it was believed that gargoyles scared away evil spirits, their main purpose was to help drain water.
    All teams were correct.

What event marked the beginning of the Middle Ages? The fall of the Roman Empire, in around 476 CE
Team Wisdom and Courage were correct, and Team Might was incorrect.

Who were the most educated people during the Middle Ages? The clergy: priests, nuns, and monks
    All teams were correct.

Before becoming a knight, a person would have to serve as what? A squire
    All teams were correct.

Name 3 reasons people in the 14th century believed to be why the Black Plague was caused. People were superstitious during this time and had many reasons as to why the plague was caused. Some of these reasons are that it was divine punishment/a punishment for their sins, bad smells in the air, alignment of the planets, witches, and Jews/foreigners who supposedly poisoned the water.
Team Wisdom gave 2 correct answers (2 of the 3 answers were similar, so they were counted as 1 answer), and Team Courage and Might have 3 correct answers.

Name the major ranks of feudalism, from lowest to highest. (BONUS: Approximately what percentage of the population was in each rank?) From lowest to highest rank, it is peasants/serfs, then knights, then nobles/clergy, and finally the king. Each place in Europe had different percentages for the feudalism ranks, but in general around 85-90% were peasants or serfs, 6-10% were knights, 2-6% were nobles or clergy, and 1% was the king.
Team Wisdom and Might were correct, and Team Courage was incorrect (you had the ranks from highest to lowest, not lowest to highest). For the bonus, Team Wisdom and Might gave all 4 correct percentages within the ranges, earning them each 4 bonus points. Team Courage chose not to attempt the bonus.

What, if anything, was kept in the “beak” of a 17th century plague doctor’s mask? Fragrant herbs, flowers, and spices such as mint and roses, in an attempt to block out the bad smells in the air.
    All teams were correct.
Team Wisdom earned 23 points, Team Courage earned 13 points, and Team Might earned 20 points. In addition, Team Might wins the participation bonus again with 8 participants. They will earn 20 additional points to their overall scramble score.

Adding on to last week’s scores...
    Team Wisdom: 50 points
    Team Courage: 30 points
    Team Might: 28 points
Might is closing up the gap between them and Courage, but can either of them catch Wisdom?
Week 3 theme: myths and fairy tales!
    Easy (1 point each)
    • Fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White were originally written in what language?
    • In Greek mythology, who is credited with bringing evil into the world?
    • MULTIPLE CHOICE: In “Thumbelina”, which kind of flower does Thumbelina come out of? Rose, daisy, tulip, orchid, it is never specified
    Medium (2 points each)
    • How do Hansel and Gretel each trick the old witch?
    • What is the main source of Norse mythology?
    • What happens to Beauty’s stepsisters in the Beaumont version of “Beauty and the Beast”?
    • Name 2 things the unicorn represents in Celtic mythology.
    Hard (3 points each)
    • Amenthes in Egyptian mythology is the equivalent of what in Greek mythology?
    • According to Norse legend, how were the first humans created?
    • What happens to the wolf in the end of “The Three Little Pigs”?

Again, my apologies for the delay. Here are the answers and results from week 3’s myth and fairy tale trivia!
Fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White were originally written in what language? These are all examples of Grimm’s fairy tales, which were originally written in German.
    All teams were correct.

In Greek mythology, who is credited with bringing evil into the world? Pandora, who opened the box of evils given to her by Zeus.
    All teams were correct.

In “Thumbelina”, which kind of flower does Thumbelina come out of? Rose, daisy, tulip, orchid, it is never specified. Thumbelina came out of a tulip.
Team Wisdom chose not to answer, and Team Courage and Might were incorrect.

How do Hansel and Gretel each trick the old witch? Hansel pretends his finger is a chicken bone, implying he cannot “fatten” up for the witch; Gretel tricks the witch into crawling into the fire, and she pushes her in.
    All teams were correct.

What is the main source of Norse mythology? Two medieval books called Edda.
Team Courage and Might were correct, and Team Wisdom was incorrect.

What happens to Beauty’s sisters in the Beaumont version of “Beauty and the Beast”? (I accidentally put “stepsisters” in the question instead of “sisters”. Sorry if that affected your answer.) They are turned into statues as punishment for being jealous of Beauty.
Team Courage chose not to answer, and Team Wisdom and Might were incorrect.

Name 2 things the unicorn represents in Celtic mythology. The unicorn represents purity, innocence, masculinity, and power.
Team Wisdom and Courage were correct, and Team Might chose not to answer.

Amenthes in Egyptian mythology is the equivalent of what in Greek mythology? Amenthes is the realm of the dead in Egyptian mythology, and the Greek equivalent is the underworld (also called Tartarus or Hades).
Team Courage and Might were correct, and Team Wisdom chose not to answer.

According to Norse legend, how were the first humans created? The first humans, Askr and Embla, were whittled from driftwood by Odin.
Team Wisdom and Courage were correct, and Team Might chose not to answer.

What happens to the wolf in the end of “The Three Little Pigs”? He is boiled alive after trying to enter the brick house through the chimney. He becomes supper for the pigs!
    All teams were correct.
It seems that all teams had some difficulty this week. Team Wisdom earned 8 points, Team Courage earned 16 points, and Team Might earned 9 points. In addition, Team Might for the third week in a row wins the participation bonus, with 5 participants. They will earn an additional 20 points to their overall score for Summer Scramble.

Adding on to the previous weeks’ scores...
    Team Wisdom: 58 points
    Team Courage: 46 points
    Team Might: 37 points
Courage surged ahead from Might and is getting closer to catching Wisdom. Can they do it?
    Week 4: anime!
    Easy (1 point each)
In “Kirby Right Back At Ya!”, where does King Dedede buy his monsters?
    What does Eren Yeager hunt?
What is the name of the stuffed lion doll from “Bleach”?

    Medium (2 points each)
Multiple choice: Which of these is not considered a magic girl anime? Magical Angel Creamy Mami, Gunslinger Girl, Ojamajo Doremi, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, trick question- they’re all magic girl anime
What year did Naruto first air?
Spike and Jet are a well-known pair from which anime?
Who is the Japanese voice actress for Sailor Mercury?

    Hard (3 points each)
What is the longest-running anime? BONUS: when did it first air? (Worth 3 bonus points!)
In “Popotan”, what is the name of the sisters’ pet ferret?
In “Magic Knight Rayearth”, what elements do the three main heroines control?

Just a little reminder for this week: please do not deliberately watch episodes of the anime mentioned to find the answers, as this is considered looking up answers (and therefore cheating).
Answers and a list of participants are due to me by July 30 at 11:59 PM EST. Feel free to ask me any questions.
