An endless dune of snow stretched across the earth, sitting beneath its ruler: the black sky and its scorching blizzard. Wind howled and tugged at the skin of a lone male Cubone, bowling him over occasionally before he scrabbled back up on his feet. Snow was just beginning to pile upon his skull mask, which belonged to his mother (who he so dearly referred to as Mama Tidal, as she washed away all his worries when he needed it the most).

He recalled the warmth that she gave him, when he had the slightest cold or during a passing chill.

And, oh!, how heroic Mama Tidal was that day! He remembered the way her silhouette ducked and swung from the violent Fearow, its eyes simmering aglow. The Fearow was only fending off her children, and took the life of Mama Tidal at a cost. To the Cubone, she was a hero. And with her mask veiled over his now twisting face, her battle would live on for legacies.

    Ah... Achoo!

Oops... the little Cubone seems to be catching a cold. He hugged himself and trembled, flitting his eyes to and fro, as if about to cross an empty highway. He was looking for shelter, or at least another Pokémon to aid in his assistance.

It seemed like hours had passed in the blizzard, and Cubone could feel his own teeth begin to rattle together. A dark silhouette stood in the distance before him. It looked as if it were to be a lone cave, sitting isolated and unharmed from the snowstorm.

Quickly, Cubone used what strength he had left to scuttle off towards the cave. As his feet left from crunchy snow to soft, sleek stone, the Cubone huffed and puffed with what little air he had. He felt as though an earthquake was erupting within his little body. Letting out a low whine, the lonely Cubone sank to the ground, concealed within the vast cave, away from the harsh snowstorm. He instantly felt that he was not alone, as a pair of eyes gazed at him from behind a boulder within the shadows. Before Cubone's mind became void, the slow, rhythmic thumping of feet stepped towards his body...

    Shift... shift...

"Kroo...?" A low rumble waked the cave, followed by curious sniffing.

    The satisfying crackling of fire...

    More sniffing. "Kro kro?"

    ...

Slits of red and black filled Cubone's vision as he blinked into consciousness. Sitting before him were half-lit shapes of a Krookodile and her Sandile son. Stirring awake, Cubone regained his sensation to feel, and felt softness beneath him. Sitting up, he found himself in what appears to be a nest made of moss.

Cubone drifted his eyes around him: he was in a much smaller hollow, presumable in a deeper part of the cave. A small fire crackled and danced in the center of the three Pokémon, providing them immense warmth. Cubone realized that his body ceased shivering. He wondered how long had he been here, though he assumed that by the faint howling of the snowstorm outside that he wasn't here for too long.

The Krookodile rested her eyes fondly on the little Lonely Pokémon, her eyes filled with love. "Kroo?" she asked Cubone, wondering if he was alright.

Cubone looked down at his tiny arms, seeing that he had no scratches. Assuming that these two Pokémon were friendly, he looked back up at her and nodded. Cu, cu~" he reassured her.

Just hearing that made the mother Krookodile sing with drastic relief. Sandile hopped with joy, letting out excited squeaks. Cubone had no clue why they -- two strangers -- were so relieved to know that he was alright. He barely even knew them, and yet here they were, cheering him on. Maybe they lived here alone for so long that seeing another healthy Pokémon was more than just great news.

"See~!" squeaked the Sandile, as he took a step back and, unexpectedly, leapt over the tiny fire. He landed on the other side next to Cubone, lifting up his muzzle proudly as his mother clapped for him. Cubone was amazed at the Sandile's skill, but something bothered him too much to allow him to share his excitement. He gave the Krookodile a fleeting look, his heart sinking in the pits of his belly.

    This Sandile had a mother.

    And Cubone did not.

Salt tinged at the corner of his mouth as Cubone felt tears roll down his face, beneath the skull mask. Krookodile paused and gave Cubone a worried look. Even the assumingly arrogant Sandile was looking concerned, scuttling over to Cubone's side. The Sandile licked away his tears, as Cubone's whimpers hushed away. Sandile stepped back and both he and Cubone were gazing at each other. Sandile reared up on his back legs and brought Cubone in a hug. Krookodile thumped over and leaned down to embrace the two young Pokémon.

The hug had seemed to last forever until Krookodile stepped back, followed by Sandile. She looked down at Cubone and said, "Krooko Krok?" The mother could sense Cubone's loneliness and had offered him to stay with them.

Cubone felt his heart skip a beat and, almost immediately, he wanted to burst into tears again. For the past three weeks, he was so alone. He had no Pokémon to befriend or to even fight against to become stronger. For the past three weeks, his hollowed cries were unanswered, leaving him to suffer on his own.

And now here he was. Together with new faces.

    A new family.

Krookodile pulled a big cheesy grin and side-stepped to reveal what appears to be a reef hung on the cave wall. Cubone hadn't noticed it before, and realization had just hit him that today was Christmas Eve. Again, the sentimental wave of emotions begged to crash in him, but he lifted his chin and held back. He looked up at the female Krookodile with the love that he thought he'd never feel again. Sandile waddled over in front of Cubone and leapt on its feet.

"Sand! Sandli~!" he exclaimed, excitement bouncing in his eyes.

Cubone couldn't help but share his energy too. Soon, the legendary human Santa Claus would, too, be giving them presents. He couldn't wait till the day came, and clearly the other two felt the same way. When the day would come, there will be presents piled before the sleeping forms of his new family.

And a new beginning would birth before him.
