The school year is nearing its final semester, meaning that enrollment for next year is starting. As I glance through the classes available I am disappointed to see that most of the meaningful classes that could help me get somewhere in life, I've already taken. Sure, there are still a couple that could be beneficial, but not like previous years. Next year is senior year, this is it, the last of high school so normally I would want to sort of take it easy as far as course load goes...but what I've laid out as curriculum selection presents a problem. I have 1.5 credits left open, with nothing to do, and 2 credits of alternates still to choose on top of that. I certainly don't want to just fill those with worthless classes because I don't want to waste my time. Those credits that I already have filled are 75% college classes, which I do think will be great as far as duel credit opportunities go. But. Then I checked out the class selection list for a neighboring school.

This school is huge, is has approximately 2000 people in total, massive compared to my current one of 400 students. When I looked at this class list it was huge. So many great classes that could be beneficial in all sorts of ways, I mean hell, I could be an biochemist by the time I got out of there. A bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. Anyways, with this school I could EASILY fill my schedule with all sorts of good things.

Now after all that explaining, you should most likely get what my dilemma is at this point. I've gone to my current school since kindergarden, known all of my friends since kindergarden. I wouldn't graduate with them, they wouldn't be in my daily life anymore if I went to the other school. But at the same time if I stayed, academically it might not be the best choice. So it's a matter of friends and college credit/high school credit, versus possibly a better last year of education. Consider it from your point of view. If both really mattered to you would you choose the college credit, less important schedule, and friends, or the better classes, new start, and new opportunities over at the other school? I welcome the change sort of, because it's getting old with the same thing every day, though I don't know if I want it bad enough to give up everything here. It's kind of a say you hate it, but realize you actually don't when looking back at it type of thing.

I appreciate all points or advice given, because I have no idea which to choose.

I don't know much of the education system in the US, so I'm just going to throw out some food for thought and hopefully it makes you think :)

Does this new school have what you would like to do in later life?
How much does graduating with your friends mean to you?
Are the potential jobs you are interested in available to you regardless of which school you went to?

And another thing. My current job hired me (When I was 19) with very little consideration for grades. That was a bonus to them. And they're not a small or insignificant company at all. They hired for the person I am, the skills I have, and the goals I have. Not my education as such. (My education is great, but the fact they hired 3 questionably minded people, to put it politely, as well as me, proves the point)

I guess it's a pretty tough decision. There's a lot of factors I guess to consider but if your school was anything like mine, I'd just stay at your current school and not waste the hassle. My high school was pretty much a joke. I took classes that were "suppose" to be beneficial to my career like graphic design/art courses and I learned nothing. In my opinion, (well my school anyway) the high school educational system is pretty much a failure. Sure there's some top high schools out there and if yours is one of them, then power to you. But as far as I've seen and heard from other friends, the high school classes are just not as beneficial as we expect them to be >.> Not sure if it's worth changing entire schools for. Sounds like something you should do for college, but not high school.

Also, since this new school has a ton of students, you should remember the larger amount of students, the more the classroom size will be. Studies show the larger the class size, the worse it usually is (high school wise) And if there's a lot of teachers so the class size is smaller, most teachers aren't even qualified for the job.

Maybe if this new school is something prestigious and worth it, then you should try it out. But if it's your last year in high school, I'd just wait for college were you can get taught the real stuff from certified professors who know what they're talking about. That way you still learn the information (just in college a little later) and get to be with your friends.

I don't know really, I'm not sure what I'd like to do as a career. I sort of know the general direction, but not the specifics. Either something medical or something in the business field. Graduating with my friends would be a cool thing, I mean I know that priorities are an important thing. That it's friends or what's best for me later in life, I know they're separate. I think I would enjoy to graduate them. For the potential job interests, probably. I mean it just kind of depends. The other school has more classes to fill my schedule with in those fields, but I don't know really.

Yes, the class size issue I have heard that the classes are huge. It's not an award winning grade A school, but I suppose it's just decent y'know? You're right about the high school thing, most of it is bs. The college classes I would sign up at my current school is a bonus, because it's discounted tuition as a high school student. So that's a plus I wouldn't get at the new school, unless they offered some type of college release for me to get time to go attend those classes. I haven't looked into that yet.

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same as here in Canada, but here only a few subjects need to be taken specifically to get into certain college courses you would want to take, the rest really make no difference towards that, and its in college later itself that the courses you take define your career path. So if you are already able to get some college courses done at your current highschool and those college courses are what you are looking to get into, personally I would go with that, cause it's college course choices that will affect the career choices and not highschool ones.

I'd just stay at the school you are at. As long as you have your credits required to meet graduation then you shouldn't really worry about things that will go towards your career. You'll probably be retaking those classes in college unless college credit is available. You'll probably WANT to take those classes in a college setting anyway. I feel like college classes would be more beneficial if you are planning on taking these classes for the learning factor rather than the credit factor.

Also, you may end up changing your career path down the line. You may feel regret that you didn't graduate with your class if this happens.

Not to mention the feeling of graduating with your class is amazing. Especially if you've been with them forever. I had that experience and I'm quite fond of looking back or getting all nostalgic when I hear my class song. You may not be friends with many of these people in the future, but you'll still have an awesome memory of your graduation.
