Do what do you think about the hype train? Do you positron to it, or even participate? Do you avoid it at all cost? And is it helpful or harmful?

It all depends on the video game for me. Most of the time, I don't hop on but I watch from the sidelines, unless it's a game I already know about and have been waiting for (Kingdom Hearts 3, for example).
There are some games that I do hop on the hype train after seeing trailers for it though, if the trailer looks promising.
E3 is a huge cause for that though, since a lot of games I get hyped about get revealed during E3.

There are some games I refuse to hop on the train for though. Undertale is my best example at the moment.
Too much hype for a game like that. I personally haven't played it, nor do I want to, but I've watched the trailer and watched a 30 minutes Let's Play of it, and I honestly don't see what's so special about it. There are people who haven't even played that say that it's amazing, which I don't get. That's like me calling it a bad game before even playing it.
Being around it and seeing it mentioned nearly every day I'm online gets pretty annoying too, but there's not much I can do about it so I tend to ignore it to the best of my ability.

This is the fourth time this has happened in the span of only a few days. I am inclined to believe you are doing this on porpoise.

To answer the question, I tend to avoid 'the hype train'. I will struggle to keep up, people are louder than me anyway, I tend to move at my own rather slow pace, and I don't usually care much about the subject material enough to perpetuate it. On top of that, if it's hyped enough that people are being loud and occasionally obnoxious about it, I instinctively mark such a thing as 'not worth it' and stay away. After all, if it can encourage such rowdy behaviour in even moderate people, I shudder to think what it will do to the even louder ones.

Granted, if it's something I well and truly care about that is a different matter, and I will speak for and advocate it as much as I am able, but those moments are rarer than blue moons. Still, they are not unheard of, and I have 1 in particular that I have to advocate, but I'm waiting until it's visibly within the realm of possibility.

    From Know Your Meme:

"Hype Train is a slang term used to describe the high level of anticipation surrounding an upcoming release of a popular media franchise or an announcement of a new project, especially for video games, movies and TV series. In the video gaming community, the term may be used in a positive light to express one's excitement, or conversely, to convey disappointment at a product that fails to meet high expectations."

A hype train is quite distinct from a 'rumour mill', though the two are frequently concurrent.

Oh, so then does becoming immensely excited about a game count as being in a hype train?

Then I guess I board my 'own hype train', building the excitement I cause myself, with the aid of trailers. I don't anticipate with other people and be obnoxious about a new release, no. But I do heavily anticipate games like Pokémon and Kid Icarus to the point where I cry and find myself dizzy!

I love the hype train! It's so fun hyping over new games with other people. I think it helps get people exited for the game which makes it even better when it comes out.

I'll tell you exactly what I think of the 'hype train'; a BAAAAD omen. *Ahem* Yes, terribly biased, I'm s o r r y. It's just the last few times I truly boarded the hype train, I was left disappointed with content I paid a ridiculous amount for simply because E3 and all the other grand showcases for video games had sold a game to me with its flashy lil video packages and purdy demos. Considering the continually rising cost of new games and the much sought after special editions, I'm beginning to show a level of restraint. Oh, yes, if a new thing is revealed and I like the heck out of it, I'd say its 'nice' and 'rad' and I'd liked to buy it...but certainly not at launch.

Knack, InFamous: Second Son, Disney Infinity 2.0. You're all on the chopping block, mates.

I tend to participate into hype train at times when I was into new Pokémon game or even Smash Bros. back then, even though sometimes I tend to not boarding the train and proceed with caution because sometimes the results are not as good as expected for most of us. So... it depends for me.

I hop on board the informational hype train if I'm really, really into something. Right now I'm on the Fallout 4 Hype Train, and the last one I was on was... hmm... Smash Bros 4? It's been a while, since I'm not the type who needs a new pair of underwear every time I read gaming news online. The thing is though, my excitement doesn't reach my wallet. I am ludicrously excited for Fallout 4, but am I going to pay $60 for it plus $20 more per expansion (of which there will be at least four, maybe up to six)? Heck-to-the-no. I'll watch trailers and read background on the wiki and all that stuff. I've been waiting five years already, I can be patient for another year and save a hundred bucks when the GOTY version comes out for $40 ($10 on sale), comparing it to Skyrim. Waiting won't kill me.
