Christmas movies are... *sigh*, I got three words deep. I can't even pretend to like them. I can only take so much jingly background music and people smiling in the fake-snow and doubters saying this isn't the real Santa (spoiler alert: that was The Real Santa, and the bright-eyed kid being scorned by teens and grownups was right all along) before I want to vomit up some fourth-of-July fireworks or dig Halloween out of its gave for extra spookiness. But I have no problem with the Christmas season itself, honest! Spending time with family, being generous to one another, it's great. But I have to say no to the movies (and music). I'm searching (and I wonder if anyone else may be searching too) for movies that are good to watch on and around Christmas, but aren't covered in jingly bells and snowmen. Like for me, I just saw Shazam! (the DC superhero movie) last weekend, and I think it makes a great Christmas movie. Avoiding spoilers, not only does it take place mostly around Christmastime, but it also has huge overarching themes about sharing gifts, about doing things with family being better than not doing things with family, and forgiving past grudges. And there's still a big guy in a red suit, so I guess that counts for something. Do you have any alternative movie ideas for Christmas (or other holidays) that aren't jam-packed with jingly bells and talking snowmen? I think a lot of us could go for getting a few ideas, and having the plots not be spoiled for us.
Miracle on 34th Street did that trope best... Anyway, outside of the obligatory mentions of Die Hard and The Nightmare Before Christmas, my go-to for this time-frame is Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. It takes place on Christmas Eve, and involves the stopping of a bloody revolution before it begins.
Our family watches the waltons family Christmas movie every year. It’s super cringy, but it’s tradition lol
Elf is pretty entertaining, but most of Ferrels films are. Jingle all the way is hilarious, it has Schwarzenegger in a role that's so out of character for him but he makes it fun, and it's cute. The Grinch film with Jim Carey, I hate him since he became a weird anti vaxxer but he does so well in this film.
The hilarious "Scrooged" with Bill Murray has become my traditional Christmas movie. Its is witty, funny and really well made take on the traditional Scrooge story.
My family likes to watch "The Happiest Millionaire" It's an old live action musical, not really Christmas-y (I think there's one mention of Christmas) but its a fun movie. Might not be many people's thing though.
I'm not all too fond of Christmas movies either. Two that I enjoy watching this time of year though are Tokyo Godfathers, and A Muppet Christmas Carol. A Christmas Carol has always been one of my favorite Christmas stories, but for some reason I think that the movie that pulls off the childish and yet somewhat serious nature of the story is the Muppet version. Of course, if you don't like the muppets, it probably wouldn't interest you. Tokyo Godfathers is an anime movie about three homeless people who all, for one reason or another, have left their families. They find an abandoned baby, and start to try to find its parents. The movie has a lot of focus on family, both the traditional family that you're born into, and the kind that may have no relation to you that you find yourself. The movie takes place on Christmas Eve, but there isn't really a whole lot of santa and magic in the movie (it takes place in Japan, where Santa isn't nearly as big of a mythos).
A little into the Christmas æsthetic, but Klaus has quite an interesting story~ Seven Sundays also has a nice message, though it isn't really that Christmas-related... There's also the MMFF movies, a series of Filipino films that are being shown from Christmas day onwards; give you guys another country to watch movies from~ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Manila_Film_Festival#Highest_Grossing_Entries
