Among the English language, there are many ways of greeting others. The most common would be "Hey, how are you?"

Since I live on a military base, I literally get asked this about four times a day by the gate guards. It's become an awkward ritual of sorts. The guard asks me how I am doing. I mutter "good" as he scans my ID and waves me through. He tells me to have a nice day.

It used to be really awkward for me. I didn't want to always respond with "good" because life isn't always good. I found myself just saying that life was good because I didn't want to bother others with my troubles. Eventually, I got bored of repeating the same thing and started saying some variations to liven things up.

    --"Hey, how are you?"
--"Alive and well. What more could I ask for?"

    --"Hey, how are you?"
--"I've seen better days, that's for sure. But you take the good with the bad, am I right?"

So, how do you all respond to that question? Do you reply with a quick "good," or do you give a little bit more thought to your answer?

Easy option, I always just say good regardless of how I feel. Kinda don't like how it is oftentimes a small lie, but it never bothers me enough to change.

I'm not very good at small talk and that is especially true for the "how are you?" shebang that I seem to get on a daily basis. :( It's difficult for me to reply since not many noteworthy things happen and if they do I'd have brought them up either way.. so my answer will usually be "good", "not much bored", and other replies following the same formula.

This is speaking mostly for being asked online, though, luckily hardly anyone ever asks me that irl haha. When it does happen I just say "good, thank you" and we go on our merry way. In real life it's more of a greeting here than an actual conversation-starter.

    "I'm alright."

"I'm wonderific!" (haven't said that in forever)

    "I'm good."

If someone that I don't know I'll just reply with "good," but if one of my friends ask me, I say in a really sassy tone "Well let me teeeeellll you!" or "You ain't even gunna believe what happened!" Even if nothing significant happens, I always reply with that. It's kind of a joke between us. xP

I'm not good with small talk, or just talking in general anymore, so it depends if I reply back sharing how I am or not. But 60% of the time I say "I'm fine
    " regardless how I feel.

I too am entirely hopeless with small talk, if a conversation starts with the generic "how are you?" "good" "that's cool" "yeah" I will probably just stop responding. I know it may sound rude, but on the internet I tend to just not continue conversations if they aren't engaging me enough... forcing small talk is so awkward and uncomfortable for me. Which is why real world interactions are torture for me unless the person is genuinely interesting.

And also why I tend to become fast friends with someone who isn't afraid to be weird and interesting upfront, and don't really click at all with people who just force small talk or are more reserved or uptight or something.

Anyway, my answer to "how are you" is usually just "good", because I know they're probably just making small talk and don't actually want to know all about my emotions. But if I'm close to the person and I know they do care, I'll probably be extremely honest (usually it's still just "good" though haha). I do try to shake it up a bit though regardless, because it can help the conversation along at least a little. (Answering "good, but so hungry" would at least spark a more fluid conversation than just "good")

On a related note, I never ask others how they are unless 1) I genuinely want to know or 2) I'm in an awkward + forced social position and saying it is pure instinct.

I really need to work on my social skills...........

I usually say "I'm good, how are you?", "I'm fine, thanks" or "I'm great", even though that might not be how I really feel :P

For me, it always comes down to a simple "Meh, could be better.", which isn't really a lie xD "How are you" is such a generic question that people always say, but they actually aren't really interested in the answer. They just want you to think that they care about you xD

    I usually say,
"I'm great! What about you?" then they don't respond and it gets awkward.

"Doing well/Doing okay" seems to be the default response that I use. If I was enquiring about another person's well-being I'd usually say "How's things?"

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll just say "fine" and leave it at that, other times I'll ask how the person is/people are doing (I seldom initiate the question), and then there are times where I'll say something I recently did.

Well, I wasn't much good at talking about myself, haha~

Usually I'd cut corners and say, "I'm great, thank you!" when I'm actually am in a great mood, or if I feel a bit down, I'd just say, "I'm okay, but, I could be better," or something like that! 'Course I'd always follow up the question by asking them back, though, I never been too specific with that sort of thing.

    Socially awkward as I am, I always reflexively respond with "I'm well, you?" even though that isn't true a good percent of the time. If a friend asks me how I'm doing, though, I'll usually give them an honest answer if they feel like hearing it. I'm never really upfront about how I truly feel when anyone else asks because I tend to feel uncomfortable about disclosing my true feelings to adults (who tend to ask me that the most) and peers I don't know very well. I may also hide my feelings so as not to come off as depressing or a Debbie Downer in group settings, as I don't like making others uncomfortable around me. ;;

I know that feeling all too well! I enjoy getting to know people through other means that don't involve awkward small talk; I've met most of my friends through RPing and forum games in the past.
