I don't think Ash acts like a hero. I think he's rash, just like any normal ten year old. The only negative things I have to say about him are these:

    1. Can someone teach that kid what "stranger danger" means?
    2. The writers never made Ash and his friends humanoid enough. They just never seem to screw up when it matters.

That second one is what really brings me to like Team Rocket's characters more.

I personally didn't mind Ash in the older episodes/seasons. He seemed more realistic to me. But the newer ones...not so much.

In the show Pokémon, I always thought it was a bit strange how everyone was optimistic and helpful to one another. XD It's nice but weird at the same time lol

I haven't liked the Pokémon anime since Unova. Granted, that was when I got out of Pokémon for a few years, but after checking back up on it, it seems even lamer. Ash is STILL ten. He should be like, 26 by now. He doesn't receive ANY character development, and he hasn't even caught 100 Pokémon yet, much less over 6 times that! Nintendo really needs to change Ash's character. He's beyond stale.

I consider pre and post Unova Ash almost as two different people. Fitting considdering the artist change. Anyway, I'd like the 'new' Ash better if he starts to learn and age again (I thought of pre-unova Ash as around 14-15)

Well I thought Ash in the first Pokémon was good but now in Black and White I think he acts to nice and tries to be the hero all the time.

I never really minded Ash, tbh. I rather like him. :) I just wish he would age, like Red from the manga did. Though, I really do love the new style. XD Maybe he'll grow up now? Ahahaha! That's wishful thinking.

I actually never had much problem with Ash not aging. It's just to keep the target audience the same. If Ash were to be 26 right now the new target audience would also have to be 26, and the writers just don't want that. It's just the whole thing with kids wanting to watch shows about kids rather than adults. I still have that problem with what I watch to this day.

Ash can stay ten for all I care, what he needs to retain is his experience. I mean pikachu learned electro ball in exchange for volt tackle, and ash is unfazed by this? And don't get me started on what happened at the Nimbassa Gym...-_-

I personally like Ash (though I acknowledge that I'm probably in the minority here). True, he tends to have blond moments (so to speak), and can charge into the fray without thinking--but he cares for his friends and Pokémon a lot, and will move heaven and earth for them if he has to.

I actually like Ash.... Sometimes. There are those moments when I think he isn't having a blond moment, and I like him then.

I agree with this completely. Volt Tackle for Electro Ball. No one needs to go into the idiocy of that.
Nimbasa Gym was a disaster. Pikachu had to jump up and lecture him.

Can we all just take a moment and thank the company for making Pokémon: The Origin where we know for sure that the character will gain experience.

I don't mind Ash at all. It's probably because when I watch shows aimed at a younger demographic, I watch them with that mindset. When I want serious characters who mess up once in a while, I'll watch something rated Teen and up.

How the protagonist acts in a kid's show isn't something I get irritated at because I can adjust my mindset to match the target demographic. I find I enjoy things a lot more when I'm not nitpicking at something in a show aimed at a demographic much younger than me. I accept characters as they are, vices and all. I have a thirteen-year-old nephew and there are times where he acts like Ash. That's just how he is. So I can accept Ash no problem.

I've always seen Ash as a very flat character. His abilities as a trainer do improve as the show goes on, but the fact he doesn't age, and the fact he keeps the same exact blindly determined mindset, and seems to get his knowledge refreshed every new region, reeeaaallyyy distracts from that. He still makes really stupid mistakes and fails way more than he should. I'm STILL pissed about him losing to that Snivy in the beginning of Unova; I don't care if he didn't have electric moves, Pikachu DEFINITELY should have been able to defeat a Snivy that was literally just obtained from a brand new trainer 5 minutes ago. Ash just seems to be too happy-go-lucky, and I know that is supposed to make him a good role model to the little kids that watch the show, but to me he just feels too unrealistic and two-dimensional. *shrugs* But I can't really complain, almost every kid show will have characters like that.

It's not that Ash doesn't age that bothers me, its just how he seems to be the same old thing in every generation. Usually characters throw away or receive new flaws over the course of the story, and though that has happened in the movies, in the regular TV show he just turns back to normal as if the movie never happened.

I honestly really like Ash. I know most are gonna disagree with me on this, but I think he's a great hero. He shows great developement over the course of the series. Remember, in the 1st season he didn't know much about Pokémon and was very hesitant to admit it. But now you can tell that he's definitely gotten alot better and actually earns all of his badges now. In the 1st season, most of his badges were given to him out of graditude. He's also a very nice and loyal friend to both his friends and his Pokémon.

I hated the way they wrote him in the Black & White series though. Especially in the Nimbasa City Gym. That has got to be one of Ash's most embarassing moments ever. It's like they made him a newibie all over again.
