Modders can be a blessing and a curse. Some modders make amazing expansion as good as the source material, but others mod game for a quick laugh and can completely destroy a game's reputation. There was person who downloaded my game and filled with a ton of stolen assests from other games. It was a complete mess. He uploaded it on a site and promoted it as his own creation. I had to talk to several people just to get it removed.

Don't have much advice, but this one is important: If you have a vision and want other people to help you with things that aren't your strongsuit, you first have to work alone and make a decent base that presents your game properly. If the base is good, people might join. People won't join "just" a vision, so the begining might be hard, because you can't get everything to its fullest potential.

I pretty much stopped making Pokémon sprites. Now I mostly make small original pixelart.
Beginning with sprite edits and splices is a good practice. It gives you a better understanding of how Pokémon sprites "work".
