I have a new character. Her name is Emma Hendreks. She's a red headed girl who I simply describe as human Discord from MLP. Weird, crazy, and surprisingly deep. She has lunarkinesis and is good at playing the violin, because why not? The only thing I don't have for Emma i a backstory. So, any ideas?

Considering the fact that I know nothing about Discord from MLP or MLP for that matter, I may not have as valuable as advice as others may offer. Aside from that, I would recommend something that would have allowed her to do the things she does. Why does she have Lunarkinesis really? Why not expand on that idea? If the character is surprisingly deep, what is the harm in making their back story the same? Just a few things to think about. Of course, there are things such as the childhood of such characters and all that, but I myself am always interested on what the creator of anything has to offer. Their own ideas. I wish you luck on your effort to find a well thought out back story for your character.

Whenever I make a character, I keep their backstories as simple as possible. As I see you have an understanding of MLP characters, I'll direct you to Pinkie Pie as a good and simple character backstory. She grew up bored on a rock farm until deciding to have fun, then realized she wanted others to have fun, too. That's her entire backstory. Fluttershy, who is generally considered a favorite character by the majority of fans, hardly has a backstory at all. In stories, backstories aren't as important as who the character is now. Making a backstory too prominent can ruin the "present time" of the story.

So my advice would be to not give her a backstory unless it is absolutely necessary. If it is necessary, and I'm guessing it will be to explain her lunarkinesis (what is lunarkinesis, anyway?), then try to keep it as simple as possible. Avoid dramatic flashback-like telling and simply state what led to her obtaining that power in the story.

I will say backstory can be very very important, depending on what the main plot is. MLP, being a show without any ridiculously deep plot, doesn't need a big backstory. Many books or TV series' though, the backstory is what made the character who he/she is, and often explains the motives of why they behave that way. That kind of backstory is important, and when made right, can be very meaningful and can be one of the best parts of the series. So... if you can make a backstory that helps explain why she acts like this, or a defining moment that fits well then go for it! Probably some sort of traumatic experience, or a boring, neglectful childhood... something defining. If thats not that important then I wouldn't put one in, or at least not a detailed one.
