Biggest surprise?

The lack of new Pokémon, but I got used to it over time.

 

Just the 3D of different sprites for the Pokémon. Especially the shinies, they look amazing on this game and hope they continue it in the future.

 

Apart from Lysandre blowing himself up, a giant man called AZ, the fact that Klefki was an actual thing (*sigh*), and the absolutely OP Quick Ball power (surprises me every time)?

Well, how about the fucking shiny Bunnelby in the catching tutorial -_-

 

For me it'll pretty much have to be seeing the mega evolve pokemons, the new pokemons, the 3d design, and everything else.

 

How goddamn lame the Sky Battles turned out to be.

 

The Mega evolutions and the 3d graphics surprised me a lot.

 

Plot wise I didn't think there were that many surprises. I mean come on, you can see lysandre's the villain just by looking at him (I do love how like no one was actually surprised lysandre was the villain. He makes the announcement. Ppl go oh no! And then we fight)

Anyways, I'm a real heavy hitter for graphics so I guess how amazing they were was a surprise. (I like grew up on gen 2. Going from blobs of pixels to actually knowing the Pokémon just by looking at the sprite was a big thing for me) The camera angles, the buildings, the sceneries, the customization (asdfghjkl the customization), the movements those were all great.....I dunno if this is a list of all the things that surprised me or a list of just things I liked from the game tho....

That sounds awesome tho lol.

I like the skybattles. Mostly because I travel around with a crobat and charizard that don't get used much otherwise

 

Raising the shiny chance. A very unpleasant surprise

 

I have to agree with Doima, the Sky Battles are pretty pointless, personally, I think it would be cool if they could have a minigame that's like the RingMaster stuff from the anime, that would kill Sky Battles lol

 

I think the shiny chance increase was the biggest surprise for me, as well as the fact that the villians base is in plain sight. I mean, it's like the "there's no button behind the poster" thing taken to a whole new level.

 

The return of Youngster Joey and references to Unova and Gary made me smile

 

I don't really see why an increased shiny chance is so unpleasant. I've still only ever gotten 1 :/

Oh yeah I remember the Gary reference. Made me smile too lol.

Which reminds me, the over 9000 reference could have been a nice surprise if it hadn't been spoilered all throughout the internet by the time I'd gotten to play it. And the pikachu DS XL in the very beginning of the game which was a cute surprise. I expected the Wii U. Oh oh and the elevator ghost in Lumiose!

 

Mega evolutions. I mean, they were spoiled for me long before I played the game but I was still pretty surprised about them.

 

Exactly the same for me. I was expecting about 90 new Pokémon or something like that, but we only got 70-something. I was kind of disappointed when I first found out that there were so few new Pokémon, but like you said, easy to get used to, and since there were Pokémon from all generations present within the game, I didn't even think it took that much away from the game.

 

The fact that all Pokémon had new cries. Especially Pikachu; that one actually kinda pissed me off.

Also, the way they mastered the way the Pokémon move and idle. Kabutops' pose I think is right on the money considering its design, and Scizor is just plain threatening when it clamps its pincer while idling.

 

Except for Mr. Mime. And Purrloin. Those are just really really bad...

 

Mr. Mime I don't think is that bad. Yeah, he looks like he just took an IV drip full of pop rocks but he's miming it up. Purrloin... yeah why the hell is that even standing up?

 

To me, it was the cutscene when you face Xerneas/Yveltal. Sure, almost every game had a little cutscene when you face the game's main legendary Pokémon. But XY's cutscene was pretty damn awesome.

Ah, and also how the Pokémon have new cries. I think it's Gamefreak's attempt at making the cries sound less robotic and more creature-like? idk. I don't mind them, but some of the cries sound even weirder than its original. Charizard, for example.
