Reku doesn't respond either, just keeping his eyes ahead. Once the reach the edge of town Reku commands his ice horse to stop. He dismounts it and looks around at the remains of Tethys. It must have been a slaughter. Where there were once houses made of timber there were mountains of ash. The houses composed of stone and brick were not much better, the ruins of which were scattered across the area. A thick line of that black, oil-like substance they had seen before cut straight through the center of town, anything it touched dead and decayed. There was no one around, living or dead, no corpses or people hiding among the rubble. The entire place reeked of a lifeless, desolate feeling. Reku stood still for several minutes, just taking in the destruction.
Aurora looked up to see night slowly taking over the sky. "What do we want to do for a place to sleep tonight?" Aurora asked, trying to keep her companions' minds away from thinking about the casualty count.
Rio brings her horse to a stop and looks down. She's not surprised at all, yet a sick feeling tugs at her heart. For a few minutes, she just stays in a sort of shocked silence as she trots her horse around the general area near Reku and looks at all the destruction around her. Finally, she answers Aurora. "First, I think we need to talk about, well... I hate to be blunt, but we need to talk about Ayla." She looks at Reku. "Could she have... gotten away from here... before the army arrived?"
As Rio looks at Reku, she can see his eyes are watering. He doesn't answer her question, instead he takes a few steps forward, putting his hands around his mouth, and yells. "Ayla...AYLA! AYLA ARE YOU OUT THERE!?" He shouts, his voice pained with desperation. He yells a few times, practically pleading for her to be alright, but there is no response.
Aurora could feel her heart breaking as she watched Reku shouted for his friend. She even felt some tears flowing from her eyes. She pushed her mount to walk up to Reku. "There's a chance that she wasn't in the city when the attack happened. Even if she was here when it happened, it won't do us or her any good looking for her in this...graveyard," hissed Aurora close enough that only Reku could hear her.
Rio, wanting so badly to help, gazes around the ruins. She knows it's a useless gesture, but what more can she do? For a moment, she thinks. Then she gets off her horse and goes over to Reku. After struggling for a few moments to find the right words, she says, "Wasn't she going to meet us at an inn? Perhaps if we go to it... or, well, what remains of it, we can see whether there are signs of her around to confirm if she avoided the attack."
Reku appreciates the kind words from both of them, but still doesn't respond. He takes several deep breaths, trying to hold his composure from completely breaking, before dropping his pack. "...I'm gonna check what's left of the inn. If I don't find anything, I'm going to hold out hope she managed to flee to Galahad." He said, before starting to walk in the direction of the inn.
The ruins of Tethys don't give them much to look thru. As they walk over the remnants of the town, they can somewhat make out what some of the buildings are. Town hall, the local bar, foodstands, everything laid in ruin. It didn't take long to find the remnants of the inn. A wooden sign lay on the ground next to the crumbled building, with VACANT written on it. The stone structure was torn apart, the walls crumbled down to barely two feet of stone in height. the wooden floor was smashed and missing planks, and any furniture there was in the area was completely non-existent. Reku started to look around the area, to try and find something, anything that would indicate Ayla's presence. Though try as he might, there doesn't seem to be anything of note.
Rio is silent as she walks among the debris of the inn. Her eyes are to the ground as she looks to and fro, but the hope of actually finding anything is slim. With some effort, she lifts up a random wooden plank, not expecting to find anything under it. "Is it possible that the town's residents were taken prisoner?" She wonders aloud as she looks under the plank. "I haven't seen any bodies yet."
"...Given the destruction, I highly doubt it." Reku said solemnly. His gaze shifted back and forth as he tried to see if there was anything of note, but still nothing. "Those people following the wielder of Chaos are like the reverse Eyes of Eternity, they're crazy about that Divine Blade and its holder." Clearly upset at the lack of any signs of Ayla, Reku turns to head back to the town exit. "...We need to head to Galahad. If she got out, she would have fled to there."
"It was our backup plan in the event anything happened. Galahad is one of the safest places around, and possibly the only one that could hold the line against Chaos." Reku said, still looking a bit worried. Taking a second to shake his head, he approached the ice horses they had used to get to Tethys. Looking up at the sky he could see the sun setting over the horizon, darkness covering the sky as the stars began to emerge. "If you two are willing we can book it straight to Galahad, or we can leave this place and find a spot to camp for the night."
"We shouldn't push ourselves too far. I think we should camp for the night, then head to Galahad tomorrow."
"Probably. We've already done a lot today. That sound good to you, Aurora?" Reku asked, as he took a moment to mount his ice horse, naginata at the ready.
"Yeah, that's fine. I just don't want to stay here any longer," replied Aurora as she mounted one of the ice horses.
Reku agrees, igniting the blade of his naginata and whipping his horse to make it start moving. "Let's get some space from here. I'm sure we can find a good place to camp for the night." He said, as he took off, wanting to get some distance from Tethys.
