Aurora placed the book into Reku's hands and returned the other books back into her bag. She then looked back at Reku to listen to what he had to say.
"Now let's see here..." He said, flipping the book open. Turning a few pages in, he stops before tilting the book so both Aurora and Rio could see the pages. On the left page was what appeared to be an artists rendition of Chronos, the Blade of Time. It was a large and imposing broadsword of a blade, around 8 ft long, with a black handle and bluish white, glowing blade. On the Guard of the Blade there appeared to be two black pieces of metal pointing down the blade, one longer than the other, with the shorter of the two sitting above the longer. Even as a drawing Chronos seemed to emanate a mystic feeling, almost as if time felt slower in its presence. "This, this is what we are after. Legends say that Chronos was forged as the first Divine Blade, created as a way to keep the world ever-changing and to grant mortals the mercy of death. The Blade is often paired with Exten, Blade of Space, though it's anyone's guess where that Blade has been hidden." Reku explained, pointing to the two black pieces on the guard. "It has been theorized that these pieces of metal represent the hands of a clock, and should someone come to posess the Blade, can move the hands to advance forward or backward through time."
"No one knows for sure, as we never tested the idea. The common theory is that anyone currently wielding when the effects are activated would be aware of the changes, but those around them would not be." Reku answered.
"That's interesting, so why hasn't anyone ever been able to get to the blade?" asked Aurora. "You mentioned there being bandits, it being cold, and then a possible fire area right before, but is there anything else that we may need to worry about?"
"Erm..." Reku bites his tongue for a moment. Shit, almost forgot about that thing. That could be a problem. "There is one other thing. This one has no proof or evidence to support it, but its commonly accepted theory that the Master left behind some sort of Guardian for each of the Blades. No one knows if this has any sort of truth, since no one has gotten that far, but it might be a problem."
"Either way, I doubt that the blistering heat will be the only thing guarding the blade. If you want to make sure people stay out, you set up more than one defense." Rio says.
"Most likely" Reku said, Closing the book. "Anyway, we better get a move on. If that Eyes of Eternity Group still is camped out at the Peaks, they may be trying to go after the blade as well." Reku handed the book back to Aurora before continuing down the path, now at double the pace. If those guys really are trying to get Chronos, it might be useful to catch up before they get too far in, and see if and how they deal with the defenses inside.
"Not much. I remember hearing discussions about them back in Cosa, but aside from them being loyal to the Master of Arms, there really isn't much info on them."
Aurora quickly put the book back into her backpack and raced to catch up with her companions. "So we can expect basically anything from those things?" asked Aurora rhetorically. "Great..."
Rio says, "Hm. When you say they're loyal, do you mean that they actually answer directly to the Master, or do they simply worship him?"
"Worship. No one has seen any trace of the Master in centuries. In simpler terms, they're a cult of enthusiasts. Imagine the inverse of the crazies that forged Chaos, instead of wanting to be better than the Master, they submitted to the Master being better."
"Why would anyone want to submit to something that hasn't shown up for centuries?" asked Aurora. "Unless, you are just that crazy."
"I can't blame them for thinking that, but that doesn't sound good for us. I'd rather deal with ordinary bandits than utterly devout men." Rio says. "You know, if they're worshipping the Master, wouldn't they rather guard the blade instead of trying to obtain it?"
"Some people are just crazy like that." Reku replied. "They feel the need to worship something of a higher power. I was like that once...Never again." Shaking his head for a moment, Reku looked over at Rio. "Honestly, not sure. That could be what they are doing, but you can never tell for sure with these kinds of groups. Usually its whoever is in charge of said cult that decides what their plan of action is."
"Well, either way, they are in our way of getting to the blade," said Aurora. "And we can kill them just as easily."
"Preferably not kill, but close enough" Reku replied, putting his hands behind his head. "Not worth just killing senselessly, unless we were getting paid for it. Though being a mercenary doesn't exactly pay the bills."
"I hope we don't have to take anyone's lives, but we're not going to have much of a choice if we end up in a battle with them. After all, taking even a moment to worry about your opponent's well-being can be all that it takes for them to defeat you." Rio says.
"Well, for some people. That stopped being an issue for me a long time ago." Looking ahead, Reku can see the woods are starting to clear out, the path of destruction they are walking on leading out through the clearing, stretching for miles north over what would otherwise be lush hill filled plains. Though after that creatures carnage to the ground, it looked more like a torn up, muddy path over the hills. "We're getting closer. Jin's Forest isn't that far from the Peaks, and we are almost out."
