Our second NFC Wild Card matchup:

Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints (3:40 PM EST)

    Preview:

The last game of the Wild Card round of the playoffs is a clash between two bitter divisional rivals in the Superdome right in the heart of the Big Easy. The red hot New Orleans Saints host the Carolina Panthers.
Neither team is a stranger to the playoffs, however their postseason successes have been rare. New Orleans has made only one Super Bowl appearance with quarterback Drew Brees at the helm to defeat a heavily favored Peyton Manning and the Colts back in 2009. He'll attempt to lead the team right back to the big stage and remain undefeated.
Carolina's successes have largely been thanks to superstar quarterback Cam Newton, however he still has yet to guide them to a Super Bowl victory. This season has both teams as well as the rival Atlanta Falcons comprising of the most competitive division in the NFC.
Can the Saints cruise to victory? Or will the Panthers pull off an upset over a team that's heavily favored? Keys to Victory and Final Score can tell us more.

Keys to Victory and Final Score

The Saints approach the game both on the ground and in the air. Rookie running back Alvin Kamara has paired up with veteran Mark Ingram to form among the most dangerous running attacks in the NFL. The Saints' offensive line will work hard to ensure that either one of their halfbacks will have spaces to squeeze through as they are the most dangerous in the open field. Both will have to deal with Carolina's star inside linebacker Luke Kuechly, who has a habit of disrupting running games.
Brees will also have options in passing. Wide receivers Michael Thomas and Willie Snead make attractive targets, so expect him to air it out if the running options become limited. The last thing Carolina wants is for New Orleans to get comfortable, otherwise it'll be a short playoff run.

The Panthers have their own options on offense, but they'll likely need their defense to do most of the bulkload in staving off Drew Brees. Kuechly will have to anticipate plays before they happen and direct his defense accordingly. On the offensive side; Cam Newton will be seeking his top target; tight end Greg Olsen. Olsen is at his best in the yards after the catch. Newton also has impressive scrambling ability and he's ran in circles around the Saints defense before. Look for him to do it again if his offensive line gets broken.
Overall, expect a lot of points from the Saints, but much of it will depend on if the Panthers' own offense can click to keep up.

    Final Score: Panthers 16 - Saints 30

I'm sorry man. The only way you were going to get into the playoffs is if you led the division.

And Minnesota has been virtually unstoppable thus far

Did you see the game? Did Newton really intentionally ground when he threw the ball away that time?

I don't know; I don't even know what that is, let alone how they could determine it. I watched it, and all I could do was look on in confusion.

The first week of the postseason has concluded!

    • The Tennessee Titans rallied from an 18 point deficit to upset the heavily favored Kansas City Chiefs starting with a bizarre touchdown pass from quarterback Marcus Mariota that was deflected to himself. The Chiefs now hold the longest consecutive playoff win drought at their home stadium, extending their streak to six. The final score 22-21.
    • The Los Angeles Rams were unable to stage a comeback in their surprise season, allowing the quarterback Matt Ryan and Atlanta Falcons to advance to the divisional round. The final score 26-13.
    • The Jacksonville Jaguars' defense remained stellar against the Buffalo Bills, culminating in the game sealing interception by cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The final score 3-10.
    • The Carolina Panthers began a comeback over divisional rival New Orleans Saints, however a missed field goal and a final play sack by Saints safety Vonn Bell and defensive lineman Cameron Jordan allowed them to hold on to the divisional round. The final score 26-31.
Four teams are now out of the playoffs and the NFL first round draft order for 2018 has been updated.

Intentional Grounding is throwing the ball away when you realize you're screwed (If you're inside the pocket)

Goes back to their record of 10-6. They share it with the Rams and it's determined by the strength of the schedule or opponent's win percentage. The team facing the opponents with a higher win percentage will get to select first.

    It's a little complicated, but here's a brief rundown.

If the strength of schedule is the same, it would be determined by their divisional record. If that's tied, then it goes to the conference (the 12 game record within the conference)

If that gets tied (very rarely) then it's determined by a coin toss.

Okay. So, what is 'the pocket' and how do they determine if a QB is in it or not?

    Ah, okay.

The pocket is the "U" shaped part of the offensive line when the quarterback drops back to pass. Even if the O-line is a strong one, the quarterback doesn't have that long before it breaks.
Here you can see that curve from all the tackles and guards to block the defensive line and linebackers, since the quarterback is in between all of them; he's considered inside the pocket.

Here's an example of a quarterback who steps outside the pocket. He's not behind his offensive line whenever passing.

And you can see in this one that the quarterback throws it far from the direction of an open receiver and that U shaped offensive line has broken up. This play would be considered intentional grounding similar to what Cam Newton did Sunday.

    Hope this helps :)

@BraviaryScout Ah! Okay, I see what you mean. Yeah, Cam was definitely still inside the pocket. Alright, I feel a little less salty (though the sack at the end still brings T_T ).

Should have let that one guy finish the game. Fresh body, fresh ideas, might have gotten a different result. Cam didn't deserve to get sacked twice in five minutes.
