Hi all. Just decided to make up a topic regarding of the most famous gaming characters ever. Serioiusly, everyone and their mother know who Mario and Luigi are, even if they don't play games. It's like how those who don't know a thing about Professional Wrestling know who Hulk Hogan is, right? lol

So, which brother do you prefer and why? I'll answer later, just curious what those here think.

Mario, only because almost everyone else will say Luigi. Besides, I like how Mario controls better than Luigi in most games. Without Mario, we'd have no Luigi anyhow. ;)

    Luigi
He's a lean green slipping machine!
Seriously though, why does he skid when he walks? WHO DOES THAT?
But I like his overall design in the end, since I prefer Green over Red and Luigi has a Kitsune (fox) costume, which is better than Mario's Tanooki (Japanese raccoon-dog) costume

Both of the brothers are equally dear in my fond childhood memories. I never really did favor one over the other, and always was fond of the fact they were brothers and they were a team. I never once saw any huge grudge against them. Except for maybe that time when Mario steps on Luigi's shoe :(

I KNOW RIGHT THERES NO NEED TO BE RUDE MARIO

But I always liked Luigi more,
I guess i felt bad for him
    always in his brothers shadow
Never really getting into the spotlight

Interesting responses so far, but I guess I should've been more specific. I meant just favorite overall. Well, any, my vote goes to Luigi.

*cracks knuckles and prepares the long-winded story* lol

As a kid, I favored Luigi, but not necessarily because of the games, because Mario Bros 2 Luigi was nuts! lol I couldn't control him at all, but he was the best to use, for me, when fighting against Wart....but anywho, back to the story.

Anyway, I became a fan of Luigi because of the old cartoons, starting with the Super Mario Bros Super Show, which was based around the first two games. I liked how he was the cautious brother who would sometimes focus on what could go wrong, but had his moments where he'd join Mario and fight anyway despite his worries. For the old toons, you mention food, and Mario was all for helping. lol

For the Adventure of Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon, Luigi went in disguise as a reptile to distract Kootie Pie Koopa (Wendy in the games; at the time the show was produced, the Koopa Kids didn't have names yet and the game hadn't been fully released outside of Japan, so DiC had to make them up). That was brave. He actually kissed her twice to distract her and trick her into freeing everyone. Made me shudder as a kid....still does now as an adult...but yeah, he gets my vote for that alone. lol He's a trooper! He took one for the team! lol

I also liked the gentle, loving side he seems to have. In the game continuity, Luigi is supposedly close to Yoshi. In the Super Mario World cartoon, he was like a parent to him because Luigi was the one to find him.

Mario, imo, has been overly exposed and that's why I started to get sick of Mario. When I got Super Mario RPG and realized Luigi wasn't even a playable character, I just started to dislike Mario...not hate...just dislike. Luigi was in the game's manual, though and he did lead the parade at the end of the game.

So yeah, for me, it's Luigi. For one, he has an actual personality. Mario really doesn't (other than the cartoons, which I did like), imo, but I heard this was done purposely over time so that you can toss Mario into practically anything. Luigi's personality seems to have been fleshed out over the years and evident in the games. Some of the traits seen in the three cartoon series.

There is one trait I'm glad wasn't carried over from the Mario OVA from the late 80s. Luigi's greed. Seriously, for that, when they were first dragged to the Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi was like, "I'm not saving anyone unless there's something in it for me"...monetary. Found out about the gold coins, he was ready and willing to go. lol

I'm going to have to pick Mario. If you had asked me this several months ago, the answer might have been Luigi. I think that Mario just looks better in general. Luigi is too big of a sissy (even though I can totes relate to that) and I don't find his games very fun either. Any game with the title of "Mario" is bound to be better than "Luigi", right?

I honestly liked Luigi better than Mario. Mario is the all rounder in most cases, while Luigi is the awkward one. Everything about him is just lovably goofy and he has more personality than his stale brother. Plus, he is tall, I like tall characters... and he is awkward... I like awkward characters.

Definitely Luigi. Does Mario have a mansion? Does Mario have a side-job as a ghost hunter? Can Mario create a huge army of clones to fight with using nothing but his mind? Does Mario have Death Stare so mesmerizing it was talked about on FOX news? Can Mario walk on water?

The answer to all of these questions is no.

Luigi for life. Also, yes, in Mario 64 DS, Luigi can walk on water, meaning that Luigi is the new Jesus.

@Nbay64 Wow, those are some interesting reasons there, especially the walk on water one. lol I've never played Mario 64 DS so didn't know about that aspect. I know I didn't play the original Mario 64...much since Luigi wasn't in the game. Maybe I should pick up the DS version or look for it anyway. I never gave the game a proper chance when it was originally out because Luigi wasn't a playable character and felt that he was being shafted.

The whole concept of Brother vs brother is an amazing thing in video games and I love the concept of a whole family rivalry.
We could do Dante and Virgil next though~

I impulsively voted Mario.. but now that I think about it I honestly can't choose. Probably should've gone for neutral eugh. I like how they balance each other out but Luigi is definitely the sillier of the two; he's always so amusing to watch. Plus he can jump higher! Geesh, now I need to go and edit my vote.

I just don't know. I feel sorry for Luigi but Mario is pretty cool too. I think I like Luigi better as a character, so I'll go for him for now. Luigi's high jump has gotten me out of some tricky situations, I'll tell ya that.
