This question is mainly aimed at guitar players and drummers. The question is, can you actually read music off of the staff?

There are a lot of musicians out there who cannot read music because they simply learned by ear. This isn't the case with most instruments, but it still happens.

Can you read music? Who taught you? Do you prefer to listen and play, or to read?

I, of course, can read music, but I would much rather play by ear.

As a singer, knowing how to read music really does help--it helps you learn where your line is, what you are supposed to sing and when, and how your line fits with all the others

I can read, although it takes me a bit longer than I would like to. If I read through it a good two times, I could read it easily. As for by ear, I don't like doing that for harder tracks, but for easier tracks, it's really easy.

I can barely read music. I've just forgotten over the years, and it's pretty difficult for me nowadays. Just Dos and Res now.

I can. I've been musically trained since very young, so if I'm not able to read music now, I must've learnt nothing after all these years and all those piano lessons would've gone to waste. Sight reading's not my strongest point though, but I can get the general melody and structure of the piece during the first few plays. That's where listening comes in handy. I feel that listening to the music beforehand makes it easier for me to read and pick up a new piece.

I can... Just a little. Enough to say I can, but not enough to be practical.

I was trained to play piano while a child, and thus I was taught to read sheet music. In the short time that I played I became quite skilled, though my abilities with the piano have long since atrophied. I can still read sheet music proficiently, though.

I think I'm in the exact opposite situation as the question asks: I can read regular sheet music just fine (experienced reading violin and piano), but I have no idea how to read guitar tabs or drum music. I can only backwards-interpret music to be traditional European-style music notes, not as any other kind of written representation of musical sound.

But then again I don't know how to play guitar or drums at all to need to know how to read their music. All I can do in those is play air-drum flailing my arms around at invisible drums and cymbals. While driving. At night. Distracted by awesome heavy metal.

I've been taking piano lessons since I was a little kid, so I can read sheet music pretty well. But if the notes go past the five bars, I'll need to count the notes.
