As much as I guess some may object to the characters that died in Harry Potter, I can't help but feel that all the same, they lent the book(s) more impact. By that point in the series, it wasn't just "let's stop the bad guy(s) this year!" It was a full-blown war and in the good guys certainly weren't going to come off losing only Seamus Finnigan.

But I'll admit, I did tear up a bit when it was revealed that Lupin and Tonks had both died.

Mara Jade. Seriously, wtf. In an odd way I can get killing off Chewbacca at the start of the NJO saga, but killing Mara Jade Skywalker? Dammit we knew how evil Caedus was already. You didn't have to go that far. Beyond that, I loved the way Zahn wrote her relationship with Luke, especially once they fell in love/married. The banter was amazing.

I...can agree on that one. We'd already learned just how devastating the war with the Vong was going to be, and they'd lost at least half the team to the Voxyn already. It wasn't like Denning was letting the characters off easy.

Essentially the whole story was a waste since Prim died anyways, so there was no need for Katniss to do anything she went through saving her sister in the first book.

Eragon Series:

I cried when Brom died, he was one of the best and well-liked characters in any book series I've read.

Brisingr - I hated when Oromis and his dragon were killed by Murtagh I really liked them, it was almost refreshing meeting them in the books not long after Brom's death.

wasn't killed off in Last Argument of Kings. I liked the guy even if he never said much. Well that was his gimmick anyway.

 

A Song of Ice and Fire:

Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper

A lot of characters in that series suffer from Boba Fett syndrome, but he was my personal favorite.

 

I know, I liked Brom a lot as well as Oromis but at least Eragon could still talk to Glaedr, even though he wasn't to nice to them in the beginning.
