Cheating these days generally refers to online gamers who have items or stats that are either nearly impossible to attain through normal methods of gameplay, or just plain impossible. However, the earliest cheats were put into video games for play-test purposes, and through to the sixth generation of consoles especially cheat codes and exploits were often fairly common knowledge. Whilst a lot of developers go out of their way to discourage cheating these days by disabling achievements/trophies etc. if cheats are activated, some developers - especially in PC gaming circles - actively encourage this with mod workshops and support. Unintentionally or otherwise, a lot of games also feature glitches and exploits that can be used to play the game in a non-standard way, and if it is programmed into the game, it could be argued that it is a perfectly valid alternative way to play, rather than a cheat. So, what's your stance on cheating in video games? Are you OK with using codes, exploits, or glitches to get ahead? What about third party hardware and software, such as discs and cartridges? Or even PC game mods? Where do you draw the line at using non-standard methods to exploit video games, and why? As a bonus, what have some of your favourite cheats over the years been?
I'm fine with cheats as long is it doesn't make it unfair for other players. Pretty much single player games/modes.
My opinion of cheating in online games is: don't do it, it's a terrible thing to do without exception. I say this not only as a gamer who has exploited cheats and who has been unfairly harmed by cheaters, but as someone who used to work customer tech support for an MMO. Don't do it. Just don't do it. Cheating in single-player games (or local multi-player with consenting friends), however, that can be super fun and breathe new life into an old game. Whether it's modding like many Bethesda games are good for (which probably isn't "cheating" depending on the modification in question, though I understand the disabling of achievements) or more straightforward cheating like invincibility or gravity defiance or other classics, it makes an old game fun by enabling more possibilities. Like going into Goldeneye on the N64 and turning on invincibility, all weapons, infinite ammo; then just running through the levels with double rocket-launchers or an unlimited supply of proxy mines. Or turning on wire-frame mode in any number of video games that have that accessible and seeing some behind-the-scenes of game design, finally learning that things that are behind walls don't exist until they need to exist (which along with Bethesda-style modding, helps teach game design). Or if I could find out how to play all of Mega Man X3 as Zero to get into that whole experience before X4 made it standard.
i think cheating is alright unless it directly affects others if you're playing with someone else. If its like a Pokémon game, go for it.
Using cheats when playing online is stupid But cheating while playing single Player can be very funny. Age of Empires for example has many hilarious cheat Units like a OHKOing Lama
I am guilty of using an Action Replay to give myself ALL THE RARE CANDIES back in Diamond/Pearl. I got too frustrated with the XP grind >_> Other than that, I haven't really used any cheat codes actually!
Basically, I think using cheats in singleplayer modes is alright. But not in online multiplayer ones. We all just want to play and cheaters make it harder to enjoy the game.
Using cheat when playing single is fine you don't affect anyone else that way is when you do it in multiplayer it becomes an issue. Cheats are found to make things easier so when you make things easier for yourself online that's unfair plus a clear breach of any ToS ever made regarding online play. Cheats can be fun too I've used a AR in pokémon before to goof around but I didn't use the cheated mons against other poeple.
