Did you have any childish moments with your first Pokémon game? I did! I always had my starter at front, since I never knew how to switch places. This left me at a kind of...disadvantage I guess. Also, I didn't even know how to save! I had to keep going back and forth playing again and again until I figured it out...

Everything gets Hyper Beam that can possibly learn it. It's so powerful and the best attack guys. If you aren't using hyper beam with everyone your awesome team of Mewtwo, Articuno, Zapdos, Charizard, Snorlax and Gyarados you are a n00b!

Basically that kinda stuff. I knew how to save and things from playing other RPGs and games before Pokémon was around, it was all about thinking you were hot shit by using legendaries and strong super cool Pokémon with only hyper offensive moves that you leveled to 100 with your 128 Rare Candies from messing with Missingno. Being able to beat any battle by pressing A as fast as you can made you the best at the game!

To be fair, Gen 1 lacked a lot, even most of the complexity Pokémon stats and moves have today, but it's still childish stuff to basically put the game on easy mode and act like you are the greatest when everything is easy.

Levelling up only my starter and having the rest of my Pokémon team pretty much at the same level I caught them. Everyone has done this at least once, I did it like three times.
Also teaching every single flying type the move Fly.

I think the worst thing I had to do was giving everyone moves of the same type - the amount of Blastoises that had only Water-moves was so soul-destroyingly bad.

I'm fairly certain that I gave my one and only level 100, Nidoking, a diverse moveset in Yellow. Sadly the reason was to "be different" from the "norm" that was... type specialists, lets call them.

I pretty much did what Slugkid said. Training your starter while everyone else was the same level.

Though, in Yellow, once I got an Eevee I trained it. Then I couldn't decide on what Eevee to evolve it to. Sadly, I didn't know that once they evolved, you can't evolve them again xD When I evolved it to Vaporeon I was all "nuuu I wanted Jolteon!" but I stuck with Vaporeon and leveled him up. In the end, Vaporeon was pro~

After finding my old Blue version recently, I was actually really surprised to find a well-balanced team, pretty much all close in levels. I did have Mewtwo, Articuno and Zapdos, though. Unfortunately, I found that most of them had really, REALLY stupid nicknames. Some of them were just a bunch of random letters, some of them were electric types with names like "Sparky" and "Thunder", and of course a Tangela named "Spaghettio". I think I remember surfing on a Rhydon, too. Not like I had any WATER TYPES, or anything...

Oh wow that reminds me about what I did with nicknames. I never named my Pokémon different things and still don't, but I guess 10-11 year old me though it would just be so cool to add an exclamation mark after the name, so it was MEWTWO! ZAPDOS! CHARIZARD! ect. Looking back, was silly and childish.

Yeah when I first had Sapphire I only ever used my Blaziken. Sometimes I used my Swellow though.

I used to always have my starter in the front, too, and they would basically carry the whole team.
I also remember not understanding the physical vs. special attack/defense system, and would give my Pokémon (for example) a move that boosts special attack even if they didn't have any special moves. Urggh.

I often have my starter at the front lines even I know my opponent has a type advantage... and pretty much like the other people here already said, levelling up my starter while the other members of my party are slowly trailing behind.
