"A video game console is a device that outputs a video signal or visual image to display a video game. The term "video game console" is used to distinguish a console machine primarily designed for consumers to use for playing video games in contrast to arcade machines or home computers. It includes the home video game consoles, the handheld game consoles, the microconsoles and the dedicated consoles." -Wikipedia

Anyhow, there are so many consoles out there, from the gameboy colors to the Xbox Kinect. What are some of your favorite consoles? Why? Do you like the games that it offers or the company it comes from or maybe it's something else? Feel free to discuss!

    Good question, indeed.

I think that my favorite console would have to be the Nintendo 64. The unique, and yet really strange, controller is classic, the game library is arguably the best from any game system, and the basic design of the system is just what it needs.

Although one thing, Nintendo started putting a "64" at the end of everything instead of coming up with more creative names. Oh well, at least the console was amazing.

My second is probably the Nintendo 3ds. It is a really cool little system (or big if you have an XL). The game library is fantastic and so is the control stick. The control stick is really smooth and I like moving it around a lot... and... I'm getting carried away here. Back to the point. The game library makes it the amazing system that it is. It isn't really that the control stick is sexy (trust me, that's a leading factor too), games like Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Awakening, Super Smash Bros., etc. make it what it is.

You know what? I don't know which one I like better! There are both really cool systems :)

You could say the same about the 3DS, too, honestly.

Personally, I'd say my favorite console is the PS2. It's so versatile, powerful for its time, and just flippin' great. The biggest reason though: the Kingdom Hearts series has its roots in this console ;)

My second favorite is actually the Wii. The controllers just felt comfortable, there were literally hundreds of games from two systems to play, and many of my video game favorites were Wii-exclusive (i.e. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Pokémon Battle Revolution). CC @[member="Noctis"] for her opinion.

Easilyyyy the PS3. So good I bought it twice, lol. Followed closely by the ps2. Between both consoles there's simply a wide variety of games whose genre appeals to me, and there are some great exclusives too such as LittleBigPlanet, God Of War, InFamous, Rainbow Moon and lots more.

LittleBigPlanet was a great addition to the PS console family, definitely! Every playstation console is pretty kick-ass if we're being honest with ourselves.

@[member="Bryce"] Except for LittleBigPlanet Karting lol. I didn't like that game. As for every playstation console being kickass... Idk about the PS4, man, it has disappointed me on several occasions, and the first two exclusives I got for it let me down. Then again, it took the ps3 about 3 years to come up with the games I really like, so I'll give it a chance.

I'm with some of you above, on the Nintendo 64 train, even the boring name addendum aspect. Some of the best games I've played were on that system. My shelf is filled with gems like Mario 64, DK64, those two Zeldae, Perfect Dark (equal to or better than Goldeneye in every way), Rush 2 and 2049, Mario Tennis, Kirby 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie, F-Zero X, XG2...

*heavy breathing, profuse sweating* Sorry everyone, Imma need like five minutes, maybe ten. Or a whole week.

The only thing I don't like about it is the controller design. Control pad only was used in one game, good intentions gone unfulfilled.

The SNES, GBA, DS, and PS2 are all tied for second though. Gamecube, PS1, NES I don't care as much for. Nothing personal for those who do.

Honestly my favorite is the 3DS, because it's what I use the most. Plus Alpha Sapphire is my favorite game, and there are other cool games for it such as MH and AC:NL.

My only complaint is that it can't play GBA games, but at least it can still play NDS games too.

    PC MASTER RAAAAAAAACE YO

Anyway, as far as game consoles go, it's too hard for me to choose. On one hand, the gamecube is what really got me into gaming. I'd mostly stuck to my four games on my gameboy happily unil the gamecube was brought into my life. Kirby's air ride is still my favorite racing game, Melee introduced me to smash bros, and Twilight Princess (my favorite) from the legend of Zelda series had it's birth on the gamecube even though I didn't play it until the wii version. There were also many other wonderful games on the gamecube that helped get me into a greater love for video games.

On the other hand, the PS2 has Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Ace combat, and other games that were amazing. While the gamecube brought me into gaming, the PS2 drew me in further and helped my love turn into an obsession that still carries on today. If I had to choose, I'd say that I do like the PS2 slightly better, but not by much.

If it could play GBA games, the 3DS would win any fight in console wars.

PC is gr8 but consoles are what started my gaming obsession. Realistically, the GBA SP and Gamecube are what got me into gaming, then the PS2 came along and gave me a reason to stay inside my house.

I gotta be honest here- I love the N64. However, it's really more of a love-hate relationship.

You see, although I think it's the best console of all time, that's highly personal and I can't help but see the many flaws with the system. First things first, the controller. I'll admit that it's probably the coolest looking controller of all time, but in my opinion, it isn't really that good. One side is basically unused for a lot of games, and the Joystick isn't really of the highest quality either. It's by no means the worst controller ever made, but a lot of things about it feel unnecessary and even inconvenient. But let's get to the main root of all the problems I have with the N64- cartridges. The N64 would have been a lot better if it just used discs. Because the system uses cartridges, it can't hold as much digitized music or sound effects as a disc does. As a result, the audio isn't always the best compared to other disc-based systems of the time. Cartridges were also much more expensive to make, and as a result the new games cost about $70-80, a price point that was ridiculously high, and still is. This also weakened third-party support, as many developer's didn't want to pay the extra money to have their games on the N64. While there are a few gems in the collection, compared to the Playstation and even previous Nintendo consoles, the N64 only has a rather small library of quality games. If Quality over Quantity is your thing, then that's fine, but I have barely any good N64 games I still need to add to my collection because of this. There's also the packaging. It's cheap cardboard. Cardboard=hard to save. By this time, pretty much everyone else was using plastic cases that could actually be saved/collected, so it's annoying that they had to go with cardboard again. Finally, the N64 was really the beginning of Nintendo's unwillingness to accept change. (In terms of hardware, at least, as the N64 obviously did do some revolutionary things with the software.) They refused to go with Discs, and as a result lost many potential customers/developers who were deterred by the high price of buying/manufacturing games. This has been a recurring theme in Nintendo's recent history, and it's only recently began to change.

Okay, now that all that is out the way, what do I like about the Nintendo 64? Well, a lot of it has to do with the fact that it was my first "retro" console, and oddly enough, I like it for most of the reasons I hate it. The thing is, I like weird controllers. I love cartridges, despite the extra cost. And, most importantly, it has some of my favorite games of all time, such as Mario 64, Star fox 64, Pokémon Stadium, and Donkey Kong 64 (yes, I know it's a bad game but I love it.) However, for the most part, I can't explain my love for the N64. Something about it beckons me whenever I look at it. It's the only console on which I'll beat a game I've already beaten 10 times without a reason. I just do it.

Anyhow, I'll just summarize this real quick for the folk who don't want to read the wall of text above: The N64 had and still has countless problems, and I really don't like it, but I actually do love it anyway because apparently I'm an idiot.

In conclusion: GET N OR GET OUT

The only consoles that I have is PSone, and it's one of my favorite gaming systems that I used. I think it's pretty flexible, and it has varieties of games that I can play on the get go (like Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4, Super Shot Soccer, Crash Team Racing and some famous franchise like Digimon).

If handhelds are counted, Nintendo DS is among my favorites as well because of its versatility of features like touch screen which makes it stands out.

The Wii U is great and highly underrated. Smash Bros. Wii U, MK8, Splatoon, and then Super Mario Maker and Xenoblade Chronicles X are both coming out soon. These are all awesome games and I play them all the time!
