I'm currently working on a collaborative story with a friend of mine and we've found that we're in need of some creatures to occupy the world where the story takes place, so I figured I'd ask you guys for some help!

    Background Information
    • The technology isn't quite medieval, but it's no where near modern either. There aren't any guns, canons, lasers, etc.; the weapons are fairly old fashioned or just original things the two of us have put together.
    • Magic is more than abundant, so almost any creature will work (feel free to suggest some from mythology). We're looking for lesser known or original creatures, so avoid things like the hydra/dragon/etc., please.
    Preferred Way of Submission
When you're giving a suggestion, it would be much appreciated if you posted here with the:
    • Name of the creature
    • Description of appearance/picture
    • Abilities/quirks the creature has
    Thanks in advance!

    Spixadon

A species of large quilled lizard, ranging from 3 to 7 feel in length. Has many sharp teeth, four sharp claws on each hand/foot, and its back is covered with quills that can grow as long as 2 feet in larger specimens. The quills are not known to be poisonous, however can cause serious puncture and laceration damage. The creature cannot throw its quills, but they can be dislodged into an attacker quite easily; any lost quills are known to grow back. They are serrated with tiny edges that are difficult to see and flexible, often blowing in the wind similar to tall grass. Indeed, this is one method of camouflage. They appear to be dinosaur-like and survive in abundance in the wild, favoring temperate grass-lands and lower steppes of mountains. They have very large black eyes.

-Able to see well in the dark due to large eyes
    -Omniverous

-Known in some places to be a nuisance killing livestock
-Generally non-agressive towards humans, willl tend to run, but can be dangerous if provoked or cornered
    -Occasionally seen in packs
    =Non-magical, natural biological creature

    -------------------------

    Wood Hane

The wood hane are similar to wasps, generally 6 to 9 inches in length, found exclusively in ancient forest regions. While appearing to be insects, they are actually magicl constcucts and made up entirely of wood and bark. Their feet are barbed with wooden thorns allowing them to easily dig into flesh or the bark of the trees in which they live. They possess a stining barb at their hind end smiliar to an actual wasp, which injects a burning sap known to cause serious infection if a wound is not treated. Repeated attacks by a swarm can be fatal. They lie in wait on certain trees, usually older ones, blending in perfectly due to being made of bark and wood themselves. Curiously, in each forest where they can be found, the resident wood hane will only live on and protect a single species of tree. This species will vary region to region. Their exact origin is unknown, yet natural philosophers propose they are born of sentient magic that ancient trees posess, a natural magical defense and counter to humans and other beings who would destory forests to make room for themselves. They are magical constructs, but not man-made.

    -Commonly exist in swarms

-Will attack voraciously, even if set on fire; will not stop until intruder has left the area, or they are destroyed and unable to move. Known to keep attacking even when set aflame, until completely burned up.
-Does not require food, no predatory behavior. Solely defensive of the trees in which they dwell.
    -Magical creatures, natural constructs.

There's a couple for now. I'll add more if I can think of some to make up. Those two are very old ideas of mine I'm willing to let you use.

    Redcap

The Redcap is a stout dwarf, goblin, or fairy said to inhabit ruined or abandoned castles. They are malevolent and murderous, killing those that stray too close to their homes and dying their hats in their victim's blood. This is the source of their name. They must kill on a regular basis, for if the blood in their hats dries out, they die.
They are usually described as a sturdy old man with red eyes, taloned hands, and large teeth. They wear red caps and iron-shod boots, and they carry a pikestaff in their left hand. Despite this, they are incredibly fast, so outrunning a Redcap is very difficult if not impossible.

Another aspect of the Redcap is that it can be repelled by whole verses read from a Bible. Since remembering a whole verse while being pursued by a Redcap and uttering it completely is very difficult, this isn't a very well-known fact. However, some short verses can be used, such as 'Jesus wept.'
(If the Bible doesn't exist in the world where the story takes place, then exclude that last paragraph; it's not a necessary aspect of the Redcaps. I suppose if the world has an equivalent sacred text, that could be used instead).

I've also created an entirely original creature, but it's got a crap-load of writing describing it. I might refine it and post a summarised version, if you like.
