Now that we've chosen the Great Lakes as the basis for our new region, its time to get started on designing the region itself. There's a lot that goes into this step and we'll probably continue to make revisions to it as we continue throughout the project, but we should still try and get a general idea of what the general layout and themes of the region should be like. The elements that we should probably focus on for now include, in no particular order:
    • The region's name.
    • What themes we want to include in the regions design.
    • At least 8 major cities/town, probably no less than 10.
    • The general layout of the region.
    • How the Pokémon League (or equivalent) is structured, plus any other major facilities we may want to include (Contest Halls, a Battle Frontier, etc.).
    • What other major landmarks or areas we will want to include in the region.
The first step here is to research the Great Lakes area, looking into the history and culture, so that we can get a general idea of how we can adapt the area into a Pokémon region. Now, let's get started!

    THUNDER BAY
A large bay on the northern shore of Lake Superior, from the name alone this feels like an obvious place we could put a very interesting location. A shore populated by several electric types? Maybe even put the electric gym near it...or maybe not have an electric gym at all. Ahaha.

CHICAGO, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS "YEAH THIS IS THE BIG CITY OF THE REGION ISN'T IT"
Chicago, the third most populous city in the USA (beaten only by los angeles and, of course, the big apple itself) is a pretty obvious pick for the biggest city for the region. Such a big city no doubt has some interesting potential considering it's size, and it feels like NOT having something based on Chicago would just be plain weird.

HEY I KNOW GYMS ARE USUALLY SORTED BY TYPE BUT LIKE HEAR ME OUT WHAT IF WE DIDN'T
Weather-based gym. Trick Room based gym. What if instead of type, it was based on strategies? Actual type variety, so you don't just walk into the dark-type gym with a fast mon with a good fairy move and murder. Lots of cool ideas we could try and figure out for the gym leaders, and from there we can still pick themes with type sort aesthetics. Perhaps typically based on the signature mon? (Like a fireworks maker who isn't the fire type gym leader, but still obviously has a fire aesthetic and probably a fire type as the main mon)

    THOUSAND ISLANDS FRONTIER
So, here's my idea. The 'postgame challenge' of the region could be a journey through the thousand islands, fighting trainers on the way. Perhaps with a 'starting over' mechanic: you get to start with one Pokémon from three random picks, and from there each island has environments you can potentially catch one more with...under nuzlocke rules. No revives, no heals outside of occasionally found potions (and maybe some heals without revives every 10 islands or something), and you can only catch the first thing you see. And then Pokémon stop appearing after that, so you don't even get to gain more experience outside of the trainer battles.

EDIT: As I stated on the discord, I also have an idea for the regions name that I'm quite proud of. Well, a few ideas, but...

    REGION NAME
The Ponlimni or Ponlimnes or Ponroi region.
'Pon' is from the greek word for 'Flow', which carries a double meaning. Not only is it a small nod to the mental theming of the lake trio, referencing the flow state of mind or being 'in the zone', but it's also the word flow. Like water does.

Limni is from the greek word for lake, Limnes is lakes plural, and Roi is just from the pronunciation of Pon.

Rochester and Buffalo can be cities with gyms, and Rochester-based city can have a large Deaf community. Niargra Falls can also be a landmark, along with something based off some of our natural geographic landmarks.

The idea was brought up the other day on Discord of having our Niagara Falls equivalent be the location of one of the region's legendary Pokémon, which I think could be a cool idea.
I also just had a thought regarding the Gyms. What if we mixed it up by having every Gym have two Gym Leaders with different types that you fight in double battles. It could be an interesting way to shake up the old formula.

Honestly, I personally like the gyms all having a single type to them. These new ideas are cool, but they don't really look like anything more than something to overcomplicate the gym battles to me. I'd prefer the simplicity of single-type gyms, with maybe one or two in there that have different rules (like Mossdeep Gym being a double battle, for example).

As for the name, Ponlimni and Ponlimnes is kind of a mouthful to say. Ponroi is better, but for some reason it just doesn't click with me. I don't really know why.

Thunder Bay could be the location of a power plant and have a lot of Electric-types around.

Niagara Falls should absolutely be the location of some sort of legendary (or Wippor).

I think having a dive spot to an abandoned shipwreak based of the Edmonds Fitzgerald would be cool its a very famous shipwreak they even wrote a song about it

Gonna talk about some of what Comet said because a lot of it is interesting to me.

I feel like it wouldn't necessarily 'over' complicate them. They're pretty simple as it is--just one type, you can usually just stroll in with a mon of a type advantage and the most you have to worry about is some mon prepared for that or something. Type variety with more interesting strategies makes ya think a bit more.

Though I did get this idea from one specific video (though im pretty sure the idea has been had several different times), and said video had the idea to make just the first three typed gyms (to help teach type mechanics to new players). And then after that, things get more elaborate and complicated. A difficulty curve.

...Yeah. Good point. I feel like we should definitely do something with 'Pon' for the double meaning, but yeah, those ideas ARE a bit of a mouthful, even compared to the other three-syllable region names (Unova and Alola).

While a power plant would certainly work, I feel like that concept's a little...I can't quite find the word. Overused isn't right, but sort of gives the idea. I feel like it would be a lot more interesting if it was just a bay with natural electric energies or something, and the electric types end up there more naturally.

    Not Wippor.

I came up with a suggestion for the name over on Discord, which I might as well share here as well.
Ontior, from Lake Ontario and Lake Superior, which are the lakes furthest to the East and West, respectively. I feel like it ties into the region's origins well and it just kind of rolls of the tongue.

After slamming my head against the wall a few times, I believe I've struck a very good region name. Rolls off the tongue, short, feels like a region name.

    Meroi

Megalos (From the Greek word for Great, as in the Great Lakes)
    +
Roi (From the Greek word for Flow, which I have already stated the neat double meaning for.)

Five letters like most mainline regions, rolls off the tongue pretty well, has a neat meaning...I think it's pretty good.

If we're including Niagara Falls, then I think we should include a Pokémon themed after the Maiden of the Mist myths. Here's a good link to what I'm taking about. It would also be kinda funny if we mentioned how people used to ride barrels over the Falls.

For something more constructive, here's something to think about: How do we want to navigate the lakes? Are we going to cross them regularly, or are we skirting around the shores and essentially making a loop (or nearly a loop, depending on what we choose to include) around them?

Now then. Order vs Chaos. Specifically Chaos. I have the main thought that Team Chaos is lead by one person, but that person typically gives vague orders out that need to be done, and people end up grouping up on their own freely based on interests and skills. A pirate group could form, a scam artist group...lots of fun potential there, and fits pretty thematically with chaos team.

The admins could even be the leaders the individual subgroups designated, with the actual 'Admins' in particular being from the more significant and larger subgroups.

While I'm making a message: Fuck mythical Pokémon as a concept, fuck having two games. Event-only is stupid, and there's no real point in there being two games. That is all.

    Superion, maybe? (Superior+Huron)

There has to be a city with a huge amusement park, as a nod to Cedar Point and King's Island. (added bonus--Cedar Point overlooks Lake Erie) Perhaps we could put a massive Battle Frontier there?

There has to be a music based city as a nod to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, as well--maybe put a revamped Pokémon Musical there?

Probably won't be able to add much productively, but I can throw in a few things here.

First off, I'm know I'm probably going to say this a lot, but I don't think we should stray too far away from the rules Game Freak established. Making Gyms of concepts rather than types wouldn't be a good idea for me, but that doesn't mean you can't do both at the same time. Gyms are kind of meant to teach the players parts of the type matchup chart as we go, and there are ways of making things tougher while sticking to that. We can do like a Psychic Gym where every battle has Trick Room up throughout all battles, or a Water Gym with constant Rain. For a few ideas of my own, we could also do a Flying Gym with Tailwind or maybe one that's Ice-type or something with Inverse Battle rules. If we go about doing any of this in the first place, then I think it'd be best that we save them for the lategame though after the player has been given enough time to have a fully competent team.

I also mentioned in the Discord but I'll bring up here as well that one of the only things I know about this area is that the lakes are very important to the surrounding areas' economy. Like, fishing is a huge source of income there, and we can reflect this in the region itself. The only other thing I know is something that unfortunately won't apply to the region itself, but can make for a very fitting Fakemon while also coincidentally fitting the bill for the Createmon challenge. I don't want to get ahead of the schedule, so I won't post it here until we're onto that phase, but it's still worth mentioning.

I may pop in once or twice but expect this phase to be a very quiet one for me.

Seems really long for a region name. Eight letters, four syllables.

Entirely agree. Already got an idea or two in the mind for that one.

I feel like we have no reason to stray from the rules if we want to. This is a fan project, we should be allowed to get a little creative. I understand the part about learning the type chart for new players, but as I said earlier we could potentially just have the first three gyms help demonstrate type stuff (A fire gym, a water gym, and a grass gym. Maybe even let the player choose the order they do them in) while the remaining 5 get more creative. I do get your point though. Worth thinking on.

I do agree with Duo that we should stick the rules established by Game Freak. If we do our own thing without following them, it might just make this feel too "fanmade" and not actually real. Same goes for the gym stuff. By not breaking the rules already set, the makes the ideas we come up with by thinking outside of the box more interesting, while still making the whole thing feel plausible.

Of the names given so far, I like Meroi the best. Though I think we should try to look for something based off of Native American languages rather than Greek. I will research that after this.

Part of the reason I came up with pirates as an idea is so that the water is a major focus, rather than just an obstacle or something to traverse. What if you have to chase down their ship to stop them from stealing stuff? What if you can get attacked by grunts while just surfing around? The water is always a threat. This can also tie into the water being important to the economy, as the pirate threat is making business hard.

I think order vs Chaos is too much at this point, do I'll propose something a bit simpler. What if they're both smaller extremist groups trying to do they're own thing? They can have a sort of Magma/Aqua rivalry, but they don't actually have a lot of power. In terms of theming, Chaos would be more akin to Team Skull while Order would be similar to Team Galactic. But, there is one mastermind behind the scenes pitting the two against each other to further whatever their own goals are. This would vastly simplify all the ideas for Order vs Chaos we've come up with, the two would be very different from each other while still not having too much power, and, most importantly, I still get my pirates.

Maybe the mastermind wants to revive both legendaries and take over, and is using both teams to do so. They both try to get each legendary for their own ideas, realize they're getting tricked and the legendaries are actually too dangerous, and in the end you (the player) fight with the two team leaders to stop the mastermind from using both legendaries to take control of the region.

Okay that's all I got for now.

Would the third, manipulative person be a solo worker, or an organization? If it's a solo worker, we could try and integrate the villain into one of the other roles - rival, Champion, et cetera, like how Giovanni was a Gym Leader in Kanto. It shakes things up a little while still sticking to the formula, and makes it (story-wise) easier to see that not all villains/evil leaders are so easy to recognize, and it comes down to the subtler signs. Of course, foreshadowing like this could be difficult, but I think it can be pulled off.
As for the gym problems, what I think could happen is that later gyms could probably have Pokémon that are still type themed, but almost always have a secondary typing that changes things up just a bit. Destroying the Fairy gym with all Steel Pokémon wouldn't be so easy if a bunch of them were Fire, Ground and Electric type or had powerful moves of said typings. All weaknesses could be considered so that people could try using resistances or maybe neutral-damage Pokémon and allow for a little more variety.

also for our route 1 bird would the cerulean warbler be a good idea or does anyone have any more common birds they'd like to add

okay hi lots is happening so i might just pop in randomly but comments:

    - like many have echoed i think its better to stick to what gamefreak has established instead of being different for the sake of it. not to say we have to stick 1:1 to them but if we wanna be different, we gotta make it count! (good example is an old fake region i made once years ago, one of them gyms had 2 leaders u doubled battled in which one trained fire and the other water bc of being a place like lavaridge with springs but otherwise standard gym fanfare)

    - i love the idea of chicago being The Big City! ive been there a couple times in my life and its an absolutely beautiful place with so much to do so we can do a lot with it! flying type gym leader on top of sears tower or maybe we can have a big galar style daimax gym battle at wrigley field lol

    - we are nowhere close to this point but maybe we can pull a hoenn and have too much water and have a lot of water routes and diving stuff!! its a concept that i found very gutsy for them to do in 2002 and not seeing it come back aside from the remake is criminal

    - i do not vibe with order/chaos one bit. i am sorry but its so..... boring?? ppl do not cause chaos for the sake of chaos. ive been thinkin about a unity theme maybe?? bc 1. big ass lakes separating everyone literally and maybe the northern and southern parts of the region dont like each other?? very subtle jab at other countries (southern part) not liking how the world revolves around america (northern part) and they started beef and Oh God What Have We Done Lets Get A Child To Help

    - all the names are good so far but i think its better if we base the name in a language that feels natural to the area?? like someone said a native language would be cool bc if irl the current ppl living around the lakes werent the first ppl to be there its probs no different in pokeworld

5 AM 5 AM lets go

im not sure if you meant to say dynamax but if we put dynamax in this region im going to personally murder somebody

doesn't have to be chaos for the sake of chaos! one thought i had was the leader having the personal philosophy of 'when there are no rules we can reach maximum potential'. there's definitely stuff you can do with that.

i went with greek since i thought unova used it but no unova uses latin and kalos uses greek oops

I feel like the unity theme works well, since the different people may have different ways of living. Instead of total order and chaos the chaos could be sort of like a "freedom" sort of thing? I don't know America that well (don't live anywhere close to this region) but I can vouch that a bunch of people associate some Americans with freedom lovers

Doesn't the thing about people having different ways of living apply to...any region? I'll also say that I will personally punch any freedom-obsessed people in the face.
