I'm curious how people feel about fanfics that depart from canon in more than just story. I'm referring to new concepts and creations. The best example is probably Fakemon. I personally feel that it CAN be done right, however this is mostly just bias as my own fic(s) deviates from canon quite a bit. I believe that it needs to be handled carefully, however. So, is this a no no to any of you?
My deviation from canon is that there are a total of four selected children that the Gods of Creation have to bear their powers in the normal dimiension, and that every Pokémon type has human elementals, and one of them is chosen by Arceus to be the Hero of that type, to have perfect mastery over that element. The last thing for my deviation is about the Heros of Truth and Ideals
Usually canon divergence is only good if it's said its a canon divergence. Otherwise, the writer looks like they didn't look up enough on the canon in question. Personally, I like canon divergences. What if so and so didn't happen? The possibilities are all there!!
I haven't done much of that kind of thing other than storytelling, but have read a handful of fics in fictitious regions and fakemon. I think if you worldbuild it right and give it a good description, it'd be hard to tell the difference between the actual ones and what has been fanmade. You're absolutely right in terms of needing to be handled carefully. Something rushed and not descriptive enough makes it hard for me to grasp on what makes this region or whatever unique from the others. It's a big plus if you've got images and art depicting your made up world. Story-wise I love alternate plots. Explores creativity and other authors' minds in what could happen if so and so occurred.
Personally, I don't like AU's unless they're done right. Right as in deviating a little bit from cannon, but sill ending up (possibly) back at cannon, if that explanation makes sense. I've personally never done it as I'd like to stay on cannon, but if it's for a ship I'm endorsing, I will attempt it. Out of all the fan fiction I've read ever, I did read 2 fanfiction stories that did this properly, one is the future of the anime that somewhat deviated, and another one is a crossover that is somewhat cannon without deviating too much from the script on both ends, in which I give props to both authors for making those literary masterpieces of the AU genre.
In my opinion the point of fanfiction is to deviate from cannon, what's the point of telling a rehash of the same story? Of course there's some things that shouldn't be changed, such as the core concepts of the world. For example, in Naruto chakra is, and always will be, a combination of physical and spiritual energies. This should not be changed in anyway, nor should it be powered down or powered up.
I take it on a case-by-case basis. Some stories can pull it off right, while others fail spectacularly. It depends on the author and the story.
I like canon diversion if it's announced at the beginning but canon diversion can be a little risky. If it adds more depth to the characters, then sure! Why not?
