Did you use this free giveaway or not? Personally, I did the first time as I thought it was cool, but after a while it just became a waste of time since there were plenty of better water types.

Of course I did! Gyarados and Milotic are both my personal faves, so it would be a waste not to use a glistening red Gyarados! I'm honestly fine with the free giveaway because for some people there are incredibly few free giveaways especially if it's shiny... I prefer Gyarados's normal color though.

I never did in my old Gold version and most likely won't in Heart Gold either, I am just before that point, more or less. I just happen to be using Lanturn as my water type.

I'm using Lanturn too, so I have no interest in this Poke. I don't even really care for shinies to be honest, they are cool but ehh.

When I first played Crystal I did, but never again. Of course, in Gen II, shinies had really good IVs, and people even told you shinies were stronger, so I just had to.

Besides, I kinda sucked at Pokémon back then.

In Silver, I used my Red Gyarados a lot. I think it was like... level 80 or something before the game fried. After that happened, I seemed to have wandered away from using Red Gyarados as a water Pokémon. I still catch it, but it pretty much just sits there in my PC. I keep using Vaporeon as my water Pokémon.

I used it for my HM slave, Whirlpool, Water fall, strength, Etc

It can learn most of the HM!

I like Gyarados so I used it a lot. It was decent and I didn't have to worry about finding another water type xD But I'm replaying and this time I'm not choosing it :)

I did in Crystal & the first playthrough of Soul Silver, but I'm definitely not planning on using it in my next time through. Like Ben said, there are better Water types.
And there's also the fact that Gyarados has low Special Attack, and you pretty much need a Water type for surf + whirlpool. Waterfall fits nicely on it, but its physical movepool is kind of lame (in-game, anyway).

On my very first play through of soul silver i did use the red gyrados it was a good asset to my team at the time and really helped at the elite 4 but once i got to post game gyms gyrados did not have as many uses and eventually made his way into my box.

I traded it with my friend for some goodies. He had only played DPPt at the time and he had no idea that everyone got a shiny Gyarados. Nevertheless, I gained some very nice Pokémon from him.

Besides, I wouldn't use the shiny Gyarados anyway. 1. It isn't good with surf, and 2. The blue one just looks better (In my opinion).

I did in Gold, but I haven't in any of my HG/SS playthroughs. I said no cause I don't use him most of the time. This playthrough I have Totodile anyway.

No, then again I've never been one to use Shiny Pokémon. The only one I really ever use is my Shiny Luxray (nicknamed LazerArrow). I would use a Shiny Blaziken though. Anyway, I don't care to much for Gyarados anyway. I tend to try and balance out my team each game and I choose Totodile as my starter, I catch it, and trade it away from time to time for something more rare. (People will trade almost anything for a Shiny Pokémon on the GTS) However, I never really use it.

If I catch a shiny, I'll happily use and it and stuff if I like the Poke, but if I don't I'll just let it rest in PC. This Poke was no exception. The best part of it for me was the EXP share. :)

No, I let it sit in my PC. I've never used a gyarados before, and I don't plan to.

It sat in my PC for a while, then when I was making a new team to raise to level 50, I picked Gyarados as the water Pokémon. It's pretty hard to give it a decent moveset, but I managed to make it work. After that, I put the team back in the box and started a new one. I've finished that team too, now, and I'm working on another after it.

When I first played Crystal I had no idea it was so rare, so I killed it. However, a friend of my sister gave me his copy of the game, which had loads of Pokémon on it, including the Red Gyarados, all of which I traded over.

The Gyarados was my first shiny, the only other being a Pidgey (come on, really?).

By the time I was at the part with the Gyarados, my other Pokémon were definitely a bit stronger than it, due to me training a bit more than I have to. Because of that, I definitely had to go with no. The amount of work that I already invested in my regular team felt a bit more important to me than a Red Gyarados did, so I basically just kept it in the box. It was always a nice thing, though; to know that I've got a Shiny Gyarados just sitting in my PC box.

I did once. I've used gyarados a couple of times, it's not really the default "I have to have this on my team" sort of Pokémon, but every once in a while, I like it. Especially if it comes in a pretty new colour ;) Having said that, I've been meaning to restart HG for ages, so maybe I'll pick it up again when I get to it.

I did use him, but not as an actual battler. Instead, he was used as nothing more than an HM slave throughout the game, knowing Surf, Waterfall, and Whirlpool.
