Do you believe in ghosts?

  1. No way. If I can't see it, touch it, or talk to it, then it's not here.

    Woohoo, 666 posts! Ahem, anyhow, it's there in the title. Do you believe that spirits of any kind roam the earth? Do ghosts haunt houses, do demons cause explainable accidents, do spirits sometimes possess people so they can emulate returning to their life in this world? What do you think?

    (Thanks Endrew Swiftwind for suggesting this topic for #666)

    ~~~
    I'm almost entirely against the idea that there are un-observable beings, however...
    When I was little, I had these two battery powered toys whose idea of interactivity were either push a button or bop it on the head and it will talk at you. They were nice and all, but I eventually outgrew playing with them, so they became decoration and just sat on top of my bookshelf for a few years.
    One stormy night (really, it was a thunderstorm), these two toys started talking again with their little robotoic "Hi, my name is robotoy" lines. Flash of lightning and crash of thunder and they would talk again, despite not being interacted with. It went on all night. The next morning, I took them down and pulled out their batteries, which honestly, should have been dead by then.
    A few months later there's another thunderstorm and they start talking again. "I'm sure I took the batteries out" I tell myself as I take them each down and unscrew their battery panels and... they're still empty! No batteries, but they're acting like they're being played with! I stick them in the closet and drape a blanket over them to separate them from the light and sound of the electrical storm, in case that's somehow activating them. Nope, they keep talking without any light, sound, or button-pushing. And this went on for every nighttime storm for years. Is a ghost child playing with them, and other ghosts are possessing the toys to make the child happy? I still have no idea. I don't think electrical storm interference can power toys like that without anything to complete the circuit in the battery compartment, so I have no other way to explain how these toys came to life again. It must have been ghosts. I just have to hope these two toys don't go all Banette's Pokedex entry on me.
    Well, I think there's something. I have no specific occurrence though, I just can't pin it down, but there are just some weird things... I think something happens. It's there, and some things just don't have an explanations. I personally am not sure about ghosts(as in dead people), but some maybe ethereal... spirits? Yeah, it's there. Somewhere
    My answer is yes and no. I believe that the dead and higher beings can and do intereact with us just for their own enjoyment, but they typically need a form or catalyst for such interactions to happen. Is a ghost a from, yes but they need more than that. What is beyond me since they are coming from a realm that is beyond our capability to understand. One can only percieve what is within their realm no?
    To be bluntly honest, no I do not believe in ghosts. I can't see a logic in there being ghosts, haunting us from the grave or something. I'm not really a believer in spirits (Well, in God yes) either. In most cases, it's either your mind playing tricks on you or something causing said "haunting."
    I've never had a reason to believe in ghosts. Every time something seemingly supernatural has happened, I soon would find out that it was just my mind tripping over itself, or some other external factor such as the wind pushing over an object without any other force or something. Of course wind can't push over many things unless said things are light, or the wind is strong (or both) but that's just a small example.
    Now not to say I don't blame or hate people for believing in them, I just simply don't believe in them, end of. Unless some serious, solid proof can be provided to me of ghosts in action I'm not buying that ghosts exist.
    I do believe in spirits, but I don't think spirits tend to cause harm at all. You know, they can be nice. I try to stay away from these topics as I am afraid of such. When something mysterious happens suddenly, it doesn't mean that a ghost is there. For example, if a picture frame placed on a high area just falls on the floor suddenly, it could simply be the expansion or contraction of particles in the air and in objects that cause such things. In terms of spirits, I think that they intend no harm.
    Kinda, I've friends who tell me some of their own experiences with such things, every time they do it sends chills down my back and really creeps me out. T_T So I can't fully dismiss the fact that ghosts don't exist
    Absolutely. There's so many things that just defy logical explanation that I think are the work of spirits.
    Not all bad things, mind. But stuff like 'Robert the Doll' (look it up) make me believe that ghosts (I prefer the term spirits myself) have gotta be real.
    Psssh. I AM A GHOST. Haha, no but really, I do think ghosts exist. I mean I consider myself a pretty rational person, but I think spirits are among us. In my culture, and in many other cultures, celebrating or gifting the dead is highly encouraged. I'm not talking about ghosts as in the ghosts that you see in movies, but more of the ghosts of people we care or knew who follow us to protect us. Well, look after us really.
    It's not proven to exist or to not exist, so there's no real answer. As long as there's not scientific prove I can't honestly believe in the rl existence of ghosts though. I think it's kinda eh to believe in something that's not even been surely proven. Oh well, even if they don't really exist it's still plenty of fun to make up stories and stuff about them. Like with vampires and zombies, if they exist in our imagination that's enough to make them real... or something like that. Just imagine if we didn't have Lavender Town, the Marowak ghost and the white hand girl to make stories about. That'd be a part of Pokémon culture gone :c Also it's cool to see we have some actual mediums here lol. Believe what you wanna believe I guess.
    Personally, I like the concept of ghosts, but I don't like the word ghost itself. There's other words in other languages that I'd like to say than ghosts.
    I believe that ghosts are real, and if you meddle with them, they'll meddle with you. I remember hearing tales and stories about ghosts, but the rumor of 'Bloody Mary' didn't really scare me, unless I was alone, or something of the sort.
    I actually do believe in ghosts. Funny story is, it's actually happened during Christmas. When my father's side of the family came over (he only had his sisters and mother), the house we were in suddenly got chilly for the entire day. My mother and I are mostly the only ones who think ghosts are real. So, we believed that my grandfather (my dad's father) was in the house somewhere to help celebrate Christmas with the family. But the real reason I believe in ghosts is the stories I saw, the evil ghosts (spirits that aren't put to rest or peace). Some show about how there are houses with restless spirits that are angry about what's happened to them and wanting revenge. And they do this by possessing others and haunting other people... :S
    Do you believe in ghosts? If you do, what made you believe in them. What will you do if you encounter one?. Do you have experienced something that scared you and you believe it was a ghost? Which horror movie is your fav?.
    I dont believe in ghosts because i have never seen a real ghost. Did you? I am sure you didnt. If i encountered one i will be afraid but on the top of that i will be surprised because i dont believe in them. But one night i experienced someone walking behind me when i saw back there was no one. I know it contradicts my statement as i said i dont believe in them but at that time i was scared.
    My fav horror movie is conjuring and incidious( maybe i spelled it wrong). I have seen all parts and they are really scary.
    There's nothing I've encountered that I either cannot reliably explain as a ghost, or cannot reliably explain it as not being something else.
    People are usually prone to hearing noises when they're alone, but the source is hard to identify. It could be the mind playing tricks, or magnifying small other existing sounds, or so on.
    It's actually difficult for anyone to answer this question at all, because it isn't agreed upon for what constitutes a "ghost". Even the phrase "I don't believe in ghosts" can come off as flippant; my instinctive response is to counter "Okay, then what's a ghost?"
    I don't know off the top of my head anyone that's actually clearly defined what a ghost is, and I certainly don't want to hear a definition that 'conveniently' describes something that people don't believe in either. Now, if we're speaking of demons, I believe in their existence (though not to the extent of their causing strange noises when no one's around), but I don't know if this thread discussion will even go that route, so I'll hold back for now.
    Oh, yeah. I believe in ghosts. Just as much as I can't believe we are the only form of intelligent life in this universe, I believe our plane of existence cannot be the only one on this universe. My ideology is essentially, "Everything is possible until proven otherwise," and yes, while I can't prove ghosts are real, you also can't prove they're not. And I honestly believe that, in the entire, ever-expanding enigma we call our domain, there's a lot more going on than we might think. But my question is, why are ghosts always perceived as something horrific, or negative in general? Why do we assume that spirits are always a vengeful presence, back to take something they feel well-deserved? It's really foolish, honestly, just as foolish, and within the same root of concept, as the idea that aliens are little green men on the dark side of the moon. I honestly feel as if ghosts, if they play into the definition we've fit them to from centuries of what could very well be incorrect interpretation, aren't necessarily hateful or negative beings. Just unorthodox.
