In the regular Pokémon games, do you plan your team much before going in to it, or do you just do it all by hand?

Usually, I plan mine down to the Pokémon I want, but nothing more. I don't really like having teams of random.

I always plan my teams. I like to make sure my team doesn't have overlapping types, and I find planning your team ahead to be more organized which is how I like things when it comes to Pokémon.

When I first began playing Pokémon and barely knew anything about it, I didn't plan. I pretty much used my starter most of the time, and then picked up randoms as I played through; mainly for sacrificial pieces as I revived my starter. Now, I always plan which Pokémon I have on my team and make sure I use them all equally. I level them all up to the same level before each gym and such.

I plan my team since Pokémon Soul Silver, I make sure I have no weaknesses and that I have a good balance between Defensive and Offensive Pokémon.
I usually do this for my "never erase" games, I always do nuzlockes, and other challenges to mix it up a bit!

I have always planned my teams (except as a kid). I plan even their movesets and when i can get certain TMs to teach them or what gym leader one Pokémon might get the most experience at. I dont generally do nuzlockes as they annoy me but i do do some monotype and Team Rocket Challenges.

Normally I don't plan my Team.
I only do when I play a Generation Twice or a game in the same Gen (like Black/White 2)
So the new game will be fun because I only know a few Pokémon and doesnt know what will show up later.

I plan as far ahead as choosing what types for what gym but other than that, my teams come together on their own. Some times, I often have my final team almost immediately depending on where the members are. With Gen 5, I had seen some of the Pokémon's official artwork prior to the games' release and I planned off that. Swanna, Haxorus, and Zebstrika were the three big ones I really wanted aside from Serperior as my starter. I never factor in stats when it comes to choosing my Pokémon. They have to look good and they have to deliver on what advantages they have over my opponent. Swanna, I heard, doesn't have good stats but my girl has delivered so well in White and Black2 that she's been one of my best fighters. The double weakness to Electric doesn't matter that much to me because she has Krookodile covering for those opponents. Zebstrika is like my beloved Ampharos from SS. I love my Electric sheep and zebra.

So I'd have to say minimal planning on my end. The Sandile family, like what I said in another thread, was a family I didn't really want at first because I was iffy on Krookodile's appearance but I regret nothing. Krookodile delivered in beating out Electric and Psychic-types. My Gen 5 team is probably my most diverse and they cover for each other very well. It's probably the team I'm most proud of and I say this after beating SoulSilver and Platinum. Zekrom may be dual Electric/Dragon but he probably fills the Dragon niche over Electric since I have Zebstrika. Zekrom and Haxorus sort of double team on that, especially against opponents with Dragon-types. If one faints, the other steps in.

I plan my Pokémon in the remake/trio game since by then I know the strengths and weaknesses of each Pokémon fo myself, but in the first game of a gen I just go along with whatever Pokémon seem good at the time.

When I played the older games, I used to just wing it. Never planning who was going to be on my team or not. Though I did usually go for the Pokémon I like.
But as the newer games came out, I started planning my teams out.
I'm still wondering if I should plan a team for X&Y or not.

Sort of. I always plant to use a few of my favorites, and I plan for a few certain types, but for the most part I like to keep it random so that i can come across a Pokémon in the wild, think it looks cool, and see how much I like to use it in-game.

Well... I usually plan out a team for a game before its release (like HGSS and BW2) but always ended up using Pokémon that I didn't originally intend to train.
But back in my first Pokémon game playthrough (Sapphire), I didn't even use any Pokémon other than my starter and Kyogre. The remaining slots in my team were HM slaves.

I usually begin planning which Pokémon I want to use on my team for each game, once I actually get the game, but often wind up swapping out one Pokémon or two for another at the last minute when I start assembling. My team often ends up being changed around dramatically from what I first planned by the time I reach post-game, especially if a slot on my initial team in mind belongs to a Pokémon that can only be caught after beating the Elite Four. In Pokémon White, I ended up not using Pokémon on my team that I used in Diamond, so if I decided to PokeTransfer any of them over (which I haven't, since I only found my Diamond game after losing it today and I still have a lot to do), I would have a bit of variety-- I usually don't train two or more of the same Pokémon across games in the main series, the exceptions so far having only been one. Type-wise, I try not to use two Pokémon with the same type on the same team, which also tends to change my plans from time to time.

The most important thing for me in planning is having one ultimate HM Slave, who's usually Nidoking. He can learn the most important HMs during the journey, so the other 5 Pokémon can be treated normally. There are some things I plan during the game (for example, the priority of the legendaries, who's the most important, who I want in my team as a leader, as a supporter, and so on), but I like to do experiments and creating teams no one thought before. Even thought if it's not competitive BUT fun to play, I work on that idea more (for example, I used weather teams (Rain Dance) in FireRed, even thought they were not competitive, just in later generations). So yeah, obviously I plan some things (like my starter), but I'm opened for new ideas and I'm spontaneous as much as possible, since I'm not playing competitively, so it's all about fun for me.

Hehe...I'm not really a serious gamer, so I usually just wing it. XD I only plan for gyms and stuff, but my team always changes, depending on my mood and whatever challenges are coming. :) But, by around the 7th gym, I usually just stick to some of my favorites for that play through. I like a lot of variety, so sometimes I train a mon just for the kicks, to see if it's ok and junk. Then, when I get bored, or if that mon dies too much, I ditch them in the box, only to resurface post game.

I plan my teams. Pokémon, gender, movesets, nicknames, even. I usually only get really specific like this when I just want to run through the game. Re-experience it.

I have an idea of what I want, but I'm willing to adjust based on what I catch.

I don't really plan, just sometimes. Usually on my second play-through. Most of the time I just go by hand. :3

I've never planned my teams, I just level up the Pokémon I like when I catch them. Can cause problems when I don't have the right type to face down a Gym though. Sometimes on my second playthrough, I'll plan to train certain Pokémon just for the Elite Four but that's it.

I don't really plan my teams, they just kind of consist of what I have... yep. I only plan them when I do monotype runs. So my team would normally consist of stuff I had from the beginning of the game, cause I really hate training a Pokémon from the base up.
