Do you think that Game Freak should completely rework every Pokemon to make it more balanced?

As you all know there are tiers available for competitive play. This is simply because a lot of Pokémon do not scale as well as others. With that being said, tons of Pokémon are left in the dust and rarely played due to their scaling.

With that being said, would you be willing to wait a decent amount of time if GameFreak were to rework each and every single Pokémon for balancing? Or do you prefer the tiers?

Personally I'd be super stoked if GameFreak revamped the game and balanced out every Pokémon. I also wouldn't hate Wailmer/Wailord as much as I do if they were more balanced. This allows trainers to be very diverse, come out with way different strategies, and ultimately give a new meta to the game instead of the same ole boring strategies and the same over-the-top, OP Pokémon.

Now be noted that even though I'm saying this I do realize it's probably impossible to completely balance out the game. However, just like League of Legends, the Pokémon could keep up in scaling better. If they could, there wouldn't be a vast difference between Pokémon like Uber vs RU.

Simply put, my answer would be no--I would not be a fan of GameFreak going back and balancing every single Pokémon.

To start off, I think it's nearly impossible to completely balance every Pokémon, given there are so many diverse components of Pokémon and so many of them overall. Sure, you could argue that removing abilities, removing IVs, resurfacing base stats, taking out EVs entirely, and leveling out all moves would be an effective way to go about it, but there's a lot lost for a metagame that would be (in my opinion) lack luster. Even though there are many Pokémon that essentially perform the same role as another does, the diversity in Pokémon--including viability and usage--is what makes the game fun to play.

The attempt of Smogon, VGC, and PBV is to create more rules than set in-game to "balance" the competitive game, and while they aren't completely perfect, they're all very fun to play. By GameFreak removing that influence of player-created rules, I feel like the competitive community would take a huge hit, and I don't think it would be very fun. On paper it sounds like a nice idea, but think of this:
    • Pre-evolutions no longer have their own niches, as balanced stats would mean Eviolite wouldn't be around.
    • Mega-Evolutions would be irrelevant; base stats wouldn't be so buffed, and abilities/typing wouldn't claim such a large advantage.
    • The same sort of "stale" metagames we see forming will still form; Pokémon with certain moves will be used, others that do not will not. This will be the case even if movepools would be leveled out.
Of course, these are my own thoughts, so feel free to counter them if you feel differently.

Pokémon's primary intention is not the competitive aspect. Even though the metagame has gradually risen up from the underground over the years, Pokémon's main objective (much like a lot of other games) is to encourage the player to go after the bad guys and save the world, become a League Champion, befriend every person, every Pokémon, and all that nonsense. Back in the first couple of generations, however, the primary goal was to "Catch 'em All". Well, with the ever-growing roster of Monsters over the generations, Game Freak saw that was more of a task to accomplish, so they more or less converted to what I formerly stated.

To simplify my answer; no. I don't think a "rework" of "weaker" Pokémon is necessary. In a sense, just about every Pokémon has, is currently, or will in the future, have their 15 minutes of fame. For example, Electivire was in the hot seat in Generation IV's metagame. Now look where it's at. How about that NU Kangaskhan that was made Uber because of a certain released held item? How about that one move that truly made Omastar, a star?
In closing, unless it's Gengar, countless Pokémon over the years in the metagame have both risen and fallen. Before we know it, Clefable will be yesterday's news, and something like Heatmor will be the new hot user.

I'm not entirely sure what the Pokémon franchise's goal is, to be honest. I'd have to ask Junichi Masuda himeself, but until then I'll just continue playing. Battling has always been arguably the largest component of the series, so I just asserted the competitive view I hold. That's not to say every competitive player would have the same opinion, as that would never be the case. However, I do agree with your point about changing viability in Pokémon; that itself is evident of a living metagame.

It would not take a huge hit at all in my opinion but instead buff the amount of competitive play.

    - Pre-evolutions wouldn't come into this factor but instead Eviolite would have to be reworked if you want to use pre-evolutions on your team.
    - Mega-Evolutions would introduce a different kinds of typing, abilities, and stats still, but minus out the OP factor all around. Basically what it does now, and they will be used to either trick the opponent or be used for switching abilities and typings.
    - Stale metagames will switch as Pokémon gain new move pools, buffs, and nerfs accordingly. There will be different metas introduced as there always will be with any game that has their character reworked.

But this also allows, in my opinion, different kinds of Pokémon being used for different kinds of "tree building," if you will. Lets say you'd take a typically defensive Pokémon, (Golem?) and turn him into a glass cannon instead of a tank. You could make Greninja more tanky and physical and still see results, etc.

Chances to crit, miss, or proc status aliments would also be reworked, with that nerfing to damage would also be worked accordingly to the miss chance.

You're right, it would affect competitive play majorly, but not in a bad way at all. You do realize that a lot people do not play Pokémon competitively because of how imbalanced it is, right?

If they want to get it big, which to me it is definitely crossing GameFreak's mind, they will have to do some major reworking before a lot of people start to really take it seriously.

I suppose it's mostly a difference in opinion. I see where you're coming from, and I think you've got some good assertions. Honestly, I enjoy competitive play as it is, given there are various avenues of play, yet I wouldn't be unhappy is GameFreak balanced Pokémon more.
While I wouldn't be a fan of it in the sense of directly advocating it, it would make every Pokémon viable (if I'm understanding your scenerio correctly), including my personal favorites. I don't know any fan that wouldn't love to always be able to use their favorite Pokémon to success.

I have a view on this (no way)

I feel like with the increasing advances in video games, they could make a mode where all of the Pokémon are balanced, but not permanently. Understand?

You know, you actually do bring a valid point here.

I would totally be content if they could like... do updates throughout the game updating the Pokémon data on the cartridge.
Lets say for example, GameFreak releases patches buffing and nerfing Pokémon. That way the meta is constantly changing throughout the year.

And have another gamemode where all Pokémon's base stats are 0 and you build from that.
    That'd be awesome.

I like these ideas, we should work for GameFreak.

Pokémon has so much potential that it isn't living up and these would be some really cool new things. They need to be more open to ideas.

This is actually already somewhat happening! (Supposedly, mind you)

For each successive generation or video game entry in the series, there are rumors going around that GameFreak will change the hidden abilities of EVERY Pokémon (yes, this includes changing the ability of every mega... NO MORE PARENTAL BOND KANGA). (Though keep in mind some will not change, like Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon)

Here's a spreadsheet of the supposed changes in the future: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ieyEORG7_MGKD0RnBhfbJGvWBDNAF4Do6p046bQEHVo/edit#gid=0

I think this would be a big step in that sort of movement.

I think I remember that list. That's a community project by the Smogon forums, I believe. Game Freak didn't develop that.

That's what I get for posting too early in the day. *drinks some root beer to wake up*

Despite GameFreak not building this, I'd say it's pretty awesome. A ton of Pokémon would go up in usage (such as the royal Nido's), and even Mega Rayquaza would drop a ton. It's a cool project, in my opinion.

Honestly, if it means that cooler monsters would get a good buff that they deserve while the ugly/bland monsters get the nerfs they deserve, I'd be all for it.

@[member="Almiraj"] I'll disagree with you there. Which Pokémon are "cool" and which are "bland" is pretty subjective; balancing every Pokémon would mean that all have viability against other Pokémon.
It's still an interesting idea, and it'd be neat to see how it would change metagames we currently have.

I don't think GameFreak will change it so EVERY Pokémon can be played in a level-field, because that would mean things like Bibarel would be equally as strong as Mega-Rayquaza, which is so not happening.
I know that they'll continue to make Megas and balance out some weaker or stronger Pokémon each generation, but not to an extent where the above scenario would happen all the time.

Oh yeah, because a floating shield and swords with no personallity, an egg with bunny ears, a derpy pink hippo, a Sceptile/Sharpedo amalgmatioin and a stick figure are way cooler than a giant turtle with cannons, a sinister panda/crocodile/kraken, or a giant metal lizard. :P

Mega Pokémon are kind of... a joke in ballancing out Pokémon. Sure, SOME weaker Pokémon get Mega forms (like Charizard and Kangaskhan), but Mega-Forms are also given to Pokémon that are ALREADY BROKEN (coughBlazikencoughGarchomp).

    Also, Bibarel for Ubers. :P

    I just laughed really hard.

You know, to be honest though, and I've said this before already but I'll say it again.

Instead of completely balancing out everything, perhaps GameFreak patching the game every month or so by reworking some Pokémon would be benefical. Not only would it change the meta constantly (to add variety), people who are in the competitive scene wouldn't get bored by using the same OP Pokémon over, and over, and over again.

I think it'd be awesome if GameFreak did that. I don't see why they wait every new game to rework them when it can easily be altered through a patch?
