Hi!^-^ I have a good friend of mine who has Asperger's Syndrome, and I've noticed, from knowing her, that Ash shows a lot of the symptoms of Autism in subtle ways. For example, he doesn't get feelings and gets along best with kids younger than him. I just thought I'd see what you guys thought.

I don't think he does really, no. The not getting feelings thing I attribute to him just being a 10 year old. Normal 10 year olds don't understand some feelings..and by feelings I mean the romantic type, because re-watching the anime recently he actually does seem to understand a lot of types of feelings in people and Pokémon, when they are happy, or upset, or lack confidence and why. Not always as well as say, Brock does, but once it's made clear to him he sees it and understands it right away. More than once he has let his Pokémon go do their own thing based on the Pokémon's feelings and released them from his care, or attempted to. The only things feeling related he consistently doesn't understand are romantic matters that a kid wouldn't be thinking about anyway. Also Ash never has problems taking risks, meeting and talking to new people, and making changes; those are things that I've observed people with Asperger's have real issues with.

I just think Ash's character fell into the protagonist trap, that is, the protagonist gets a rather dim personality so that watchers can relate to the character, rather than just hearing a story about a character. This usually backfires tho since when most people watch movies they want to hear a story and they don't want to sit around and believe they're in the protagonist's shoes, and many believe that the protagonist just doesn't have much of a personality.

I more worried about that ash seems to forget any Pokémon he met in the seasons!
I mean...he ever must ask his dex again when he saw a Pokémon.

Ash: *saw eevee for the xxx time* OMG Eevee *takes Pokédex out*

As an Aspie, I don't think he has it.

I think Ash is kind of a ditz. I mean he does pull some nice out of the box strategies at times (like in his battle against Drake in the Orange Archieplago, or against his Gym Fights against Lt. Surge, Blaine or Pryce), but at the same time he also tends to make decisions that lack wisdom.

Some notable examples are when he leaves some of his better Pokémon with Oak, or when he comes across a Pokémon that for some reason he decides to not catch or officially own. (I for one don't actually count Haunter or Larvitar as his, because they only tagged along with him, and he never made an attempt to catch either.) But that's just me.

That's just for the audiences sake more than anything else, but it is pretty funny to see him clearly know what the Pokémon is and still pull out his digital encyclopedia article on it. xD

I don't think Ash has autism; he is socially functional, and majority of autistic people aren't. I sometimes have the though of him having ADHD, though.

I have Autism myself, mildly (it's gotten milder as I got older, I used to not be able to talk clearly, had to go to speech therapy and stuff but I don't need therapy anymore and people are surprised when I tell them that I have autism :P) and I don't think Ash has Autism.

Believe me this is coming from someone who has it and knows someone who as Autism badly u.u

My best friend has Aspergers mildly too so I'd know if Ash has any form of syndrome uwu

First of all Asperger's and Autism are different and Autistics while you are correct can fail to relate to others their own age do not lack feelings. They merely are unable to communicate them.
Autism impairs one's ability to communicate both verbally and non-verbally. As many as 40% of Autistics never develop an ability to speak and many have significant problems with non-verbal communication such as body language, eye contact and facial expressions. They can be incapable of empathy. If they are able to speak they can be unable to begin a conversation or keep one up that has been started.
An individual with Autism can repel another's touch like it's an infection because their brains can only process one thing at a time and they can engage in bodily movements such as rocking back and forth or even head banging.

They may also be slightly OCD in the form of a necessity to be ritualistic. Ex. eating their meals in a certain order such as the fruit before the salad or always taking the same route somewhere.

Autism can cause one to appear unable to hear when you speak to them when in fact they either did not understand you or simply do not know how to form a response. At other times they will appear to be listening to some sort of background noise. This is a common symptom in child autism.
Sometimes the only way in which one, child or adult can let you know that they heard you is to repeat your words back to you.

Ash has no trouble expressing himself both verbally and in body language and can relate to others. In 'Don't touch that Dile' this is strongly portrayed when he felt for a new trainer he'd never even met who was almost fated to be let down the next day when she was due to Elm's lab to meet her first Pokémon. At other times he can be very selfish and inconsiderate but typically little boys are like that. We have to remember that despite his being on his own making something of himself he's ten years old, a child. His mind and emotions are not fully developed yet at an extent that is natural for that age. Heck he hasn't even hit puberty yet!
He certainly doesn't fit the rest of the profile either.

Maybe I got too technical here, I am no expert but as a writer do enjoy a good subject to research. But I have witnessed high functioning autism as a friend of mine has a brother with it so even if Ash were autistic I can legitimately say that it would be nowhere near high functioning.
