Salamence was so dangerous in Gen 4 competitive battling that it was bumped up to Ubers; with the rise of new, 5th gen Pokémon, the competition became tougher for Salamence (despite the new ability Moxie that it can learn), which resulted in its placement in OU. Dragonite, became a bigger threat with its ability Multiscale and nice synergy with Politoed (defensive synergy, Dragonite can use STAB hurricane and powerful thunder with Politoed's ability).

The primary difference between Dragonite and Salamence is that Dragonite can viably run an offensive set (Bulky, non bulky), a defensive set, and a support set. On the other hand, Salamence can viably run offensive sets and nothing else.

Salamence is superior to Dragonite in terms of offensive potential (greater Atk, Sp. Atk, Speed), however Dragonite has greater bulk and stats close to Salamence's, so the differences in stats does not matter.

I think Salamence is better because it has more offensive potential than Dragonite, and when it has the ability Moxie, it can sweep teams. Scarfmence is probably the most dangerous set out of any possible set for Salamence and Dragonite.

Dragonite gets Multiscale and ExtremeSpeed, and only one point lower than Salamence in Attack. I personally prefer Dragonite.

I personally vote for Salamence. Once it gets going on a Moxie sweep, little can stop it. Few things can stomach a +2 or even +3 Outrage or another Dragon STAB. Not to mention that MixMence, while not quite as potent as it once was, is still incredibly powerful. I think that each Dragon has it's own niche in the metagame. Salamence fills the offensive niche, and Dragonite, the defensive. Which one you use depends on your team.

I prefer Salamence when it comes to Offensive Dragons in the Meta Game. Though Dragonites Attack may be great and so is its move pool, it is soooooo slow and can get 2HKO by a ice or Dragon move even with Multiscale. Though Dragonites makes up for it in bulk what it lacks in speed, If you cant get an attack off first, your pretty much screwed anyway. So in the long run I go with Salamence.

I think on the awesome scale, Salamence beats Dragonite. Salamence's stat's are a bit better too.

I like Salamence better. The thing's a beast. So is Dragonite, but I think Salamence looks more like a dragon than Dragonite. Gyarados looks more like a dragon than Dragonite. Vibrava looks like more of a dragon than Dragonite.

    I hate Dragonite's design, ok?

I think that Dragonite is better because he can learn more different types of moves than what Salamence can learn.

I like Dragonite mainly cause of it's cute design. Plus the first ever Dragonair I found in HG was a shiny and turned into the most OP Pokémon on my team probably helped. Also, I like his moveset which I gave him.
I don't do competitive battling very often so I wouldn't really know much about the strategy involved.
