According to this Australian source: http://www.nintendo.com.au/termination-of-nintendo-wi-fi-connection

Wii and DS wifi shuts down on May 20th 2014. A list of unaffected/affected features is in the link above. Note that this doesn't affect local wireless.

Also note that this announcement can only be found officially on the Australian Nintendo support website and about nowhere else but I'll post any updates I can get.

    Thoughts?

Personally I never used the wifi features on Wii and DS like at all so I'm not very affected. But for ppl without a 3DS and rely on, say, online trades to complete their Pokédex in an old game version, you're going to have a tough time :(

It was difficult to get any good trades on the GTS anyway. Although I did get a Tropius for a Pidgey, so that was good. Either way, I won't be missing anything.

However I have to ask, is this just a shutdown for the consoles or the games too? Serebii posted that online features for the gen 4 and 5 games will be shut down but here it seems that the consoles are getting the boot. Could I still use the online features of Black 2 on my 3DS?

This is sad; I mean I barely used the Wi-Fi for Pokémon but now for DQ9 it's going to be impossible to collect all the items (yes, I still play that game) and MKW was better to play online. I concur this will be near impossible to complete the dex in the older generations.
    But it's already near impossible to get Wi-Fi for my DS before then so... ;-;

Heard about this also and since I have never used WiFi system on my DS Lite, I for one won't miss a thing. Shame for other people though.

I don't think I've really used much wi-fi for the DS and Wii, except for some online multiplayer for Mario Kart Wii. The GTS was never a great thing for me (my sister was able to find a lvl 100 latias and accelegor on GTS for a reasonable trade), so I won't really miss it.

I think the Wi-fi for the DS/DSi and Wii are only being shut down because Nintendo wants you to buy the Wii U and 3DS. Which makes sense, since they want to sell their products, but it's pretty unfair. Some people don't want either of those systems, or can't afford them yet still want to use the Wi-fi features. It's understandable why, but unfair at the same time.

The way I understood it was that it was just for the consoles. So yes you'll be able to trade over wifi on a 3DS if you have a regular DS game.

I agree with Agent Shade that it's just to get ppl to buy the Wii U and 3DS. Doesn't really make sense to disable the games as well imo.

I'm annoyed only because if they're nuking the wifi for gen 4 and 5 games, that means if I want pokegen'd beasts on my games I'll have to....well....use other means. A small annoyance, but it is a real shame. I do hope someone steps in and sets up a private server or something.

Ah. Fair enough. What is the reason behind this shut-down though? My first guess is that Nintendo really is struggling and had to nuke this service to cut costs.

Well, considering how badly the WiiU has been selling... The 3DS has been fine, but the WiiU barely sells any units, even in Japan, everybody wants a 3DS. If they get an actual Nintendo console, its the GC, N64 or plain Wii.

Honestly the 3DS is only meeting the line because of Pokémon and Animal Crossing. Right now I don't think it's doing all that great. Way better than the Wii U but not enough to help Nintendo out.

Granted, last time I checked the stats was like last oct and there were 30k 3DS units vs like 3k Wii U units.... Cutting the service would cut costs and force more ppl to buy the Wii U and 3DS since their services are still running.

Don't forget about Fire Emblem: Awakening, Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and I wouldn't doubt that Bravely Default will impact sales.

I can't even use the online connection on my Gen 4 games on 3DS. But I'm still going to miss the online connection on Gen 5 :(

I can see why they're shutting it down though. There is no point in keeping it up if no one is going to visit the wifi plaza and what not.
